Robert Wood Johnson Medical School was
actually established in 1961 as Rutgers Medical
School. It united with what became UMDNJ in
1970, and took its current name in 1986. With
the newly integrated Rutgers, the school
returns to its roots.

CIC Member University
Rutgers is a member of the Committee on Institutional Cooperation
(CIC), the nation’s premier higher education consortium of top-tier
research institutions. The 13-member consortium includes the
University of Chicago, University of Illinois, Northwestern, the
University of Michigan, Penn State, Ohio State, and Purdue. Faculty
and staff at CIC universities engage in a wide range of collaborative
opportunities to advance their research and scholarship.
Our History
1961: Rutgers
establishes
New Jersey’s
first public
medical school.
1970: The medical
school is transferred
from Rutgers to
what would become
the University of
Medicine and
Dentistry of New
Jersey (UMDNJ).
1972: Rutgers
College becomes
coeducational.
1989: Rutgers
is invited to join
the Association
of American
Universities.
2013: New Jersey Medical
and Health Sciences Education
Restructuring Act transfers most
of UMDNJ to Rutgers.
Rutgers joins the Committee
on Institutional Cooperation.
