Robert Wood Johnson Medical School was<br />
actually established in 1961 as <strong>Rutgers</strong> Medical<br />
School. It united with what became UMDNJ in<br />
1970, <strong>and</strong> <strong>to</strong>ok its current name in 1986. With<br />
the newly integrated <strong>Rutgers</strong>, the school<br />
returns <strong>to</strong> its roots.<br />

CIC Member <strong>University</strong><br />
<strong>Rutgers</strong> is a member of the Committee on Institutional Cooperation<br />
(CIC), the nation’s premier higher education consortium of <strong>to</strong>p-tier<br />
research institutions. The 13-member consortium includes the<br />
<strong>University</strong> of Chicago, <strong>University</strong> of Illinois, Northwestern, the<br />
<strong>University</strong> of Michigan, Penn State, Ohio State, <strong>and</strong> Purdue. <strong>Faculty</strong><br />
<strong>and</strong> staff at CIC universities engage in a wide range of collaborative<br />
opportunities <strong>to</strong> advance their research <strong>and</strong> scholarship.<br />

1961: <strong>Rutgers</strong><br />
establishes<br />
New Jersey’s<br />
first public<br />
medical school.<br />
1970: The medical<br />
school is transferred<br />
from <strong>Rutgers</strong> <strong>to</strong><br />
what would become<br />
the <strong>University</strong> of<br />
Medicine <strong>and</strong><br />
Dentistry of New<br />
Jersey (UMDNJ).<br />
1972: <strong>Rutgers</strong><br />
College becomes<br />
coeducational.<br />
1989: <strong>Rutgers</strong><br />
is invited <strong>to</strong> join<br />
the Association<br />
of American<br />
Universities.<br />
2013: New Jersey Medical<br />
<strong>and</strong> Health Sciences Education<br />
Restructuring Act transfers most<br />
of UMDNJ <strong>to</strong> <strong>Rutgers</strong>.<br />
<strong>Rutgers</strong> joins the Committee<br />
on Institutional Cooperation.<br />
