reddish yellow slip (5YR 7/8). <strong>The</strong> lower part <strong>of</strong><br />
the stand without the base is preserved in 14 join-<br />
ing fragments; surface eroded with some areas <strong>of</strong><br />
chipping.<br />
Hollow, cylindrical stand, slightly splayed <strong>at</strong> the<br />
bottom, with flutes bordered by thick arrises with a<br />
groove <strong>at</strong> the center. On the lower ends <strong>of</strong> the arrises<br />
are brown brushstrokes, perhaps trying to simul<strong>at</strong>e<br />
the lower curves <strong>of</strong> the flutes.<br />
Findspot: Forum Southwest.232 <strong>The</strong> fragments<br />
were found in the destruction levels <strong>of</strong> the "Centaur<br />
B<strong>at</strong>h", in a context d<strong>at</strong>ed to the first half <strong>of</strong> the 4th<br />
century (Lot 76-75). <strong>The</strong> fragments must fit chro-<br />
nologically in the period between the time <strong>of</strong> con-<br />
struction <strong>of</strong> the building (end <strong>of</strong> the 5th century) and<br />
its destruction during the third quarter <strong>of</strong> the 4th<br />
century.<br />

Porous, reddish yellow clay (5YR 7/6) with<br />
predominantly red inclusions; thick, pink slip<br />
(7.5YR 7/4). About one half <strong>of</strong> the original cir-<br />
cumference with the beginning <strong>of</strong> the base is pre-<br />
served in six joining fragments; chipped surface.<br />
Hollow, cylindrical stand, slightly splayed <strong>at</strong> the<br />
bottom. <strong>The</strong> arrises have a center groove stopped <strong>at</strong><br />
the base; the lower curve <strong>of</strong> the flutes is simul<strong>at</strong>ed<br />
with brown brushstrokes forming the ends <strong>of</strong> the<br />
arrises. A partially painted cavetto constitutes the<br />
connection between the stand and the base.<br />

Compact, reddish yellow clay (5YR 7/6) with<br />
a very few red inclusions; thick, reddish yellow<br />
slip (7.5YR 7/6). A small part <strong>of</strong> the original<br />
circumference with the beginning <strong>of</strong> the base is<br />
preserved. Surface eroded with some areas <strong>of</strong><br />
incrust<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />
Lower part <strong>of</strong> hollow, cylindrical stand slightly<br />
splayed <strong>at</strong> the bottom with a tall upright half-round<br />
molding <strong>at</strong> the point <strong>of</strong> connection to the base; the<br />
flutes are bordered by arrises trunc<strong>at</strong>ed <strong>at</strong> the base.<br />
Wide bands, altern<strong>at</strong>ely dark red and brown, cover<br />
the ends <strong>of</strong> the arrises; the cavetto is partially painted<br />
brown.<br />
Findspot: Potters' Quarter, Court <strong>of</strong> the Terracotta<br />
Factory.233 <strong>The</strong> fragment was found in a context<br />
closed in the third quarter <strong>of</strong> the 4th century B.C.<br />

Very impure, reddish yellow clay (7.5YR 7/6)<br />
with predominantly red inclusions; thick layer <strong>of</strong><br />
very pale brown slip (1OYR 8/4). A good part <strong>of</strong><br />
the stand is preserved in 16 joining fragments;<br />
surface eroded with wide areas <strong>of</strong> chipping and<br />
incrust<strong>at</strong>ion. Traces <strong>of</strong> scorching on the inside.<br />
Hollow, cylindrical stand with wide flutes bordered<br />
by thick arrises which are marked by a groove. <strong>The</strong><br />
flutes are interrupted above by a collar with a fl<strong>at</strong><br />
pr<strong>of</strong>ile, widening slightly toward the top, which is<br />
placed <strong>at</strong> the juncture <strong>of</strong> the stand and the bowl. <strong>The</strong><br />
lower part <strong>of</strong> the collar is painted with a brown<br />
band.<br />
