Goals & Performance Setting corporate responsibility goals and tracking our performance is one of our most important functions. It gives our company and our stakeholders the information and tools needed to make critical decisions today and tomorrow. Community • Deepen associate community engagement by increasing awareness and participation in local volunteer opportunities • Increase associate involvement in company’s philanthropic initiatives • Focus support on local organizations to maximize impact in communities • Increase customer engagement in community giving through support of cause marketing campaigns Environment • Sell more sustainable products and services. -Continue to improve sourcing, identification and the promotion of greener products to customers. -Reduce the use of outbound packaging materials in the U.S. by 20% by 2020 from a 2011 baseline. • Offer easy customer recycling solutions. -By 2020, recycle 100 million ink and toner cartridges each year across all operations. -By 2020, recycle 40 million pounds of eWaste each year globally. • Eliminate operational waste. -Reduce waste to landfills by 25% globally by 2020 with 2010 as a baseline. • Maximize energy efficiency and renewable energy. -Reduce the electrical intensity of our global operations by 25% by 2020 from a 2010 baseline. -Ensure that 50% of our active locations in the U.S. achieve ENERGY STAR® certification by 2020. -Reduce global carbon emissions by 50% by 2020 from a 2010 baseline. Ethics • Continue to increase the visibility and brand of the Global Ethics & Compliance Office and ethics program both domestically and internationally. • Implement a global training platform (online) that will provide easy access to existing and new training programs. • Continue to strengthen our FCPA/Anti-Corruption Program with an emphasis on our High Growth Markets. • Support the Chief Culture Officer in the successful implementation of his ethics-related objectives. Diversity & Inclusion • Increase underrepresented minorities at our corporate headquarters. Our intention is to create a talent pipeline by hiring more diverse college interns and seasoned professionals to join the ranks of the talented team already in place at Staples. • Create strategic partnerships to employ more veterans and to launch a veterans Associate Resource Group to help us identify additional ways that Staples can support the heroic men and women who serve or have served in our Armed Forces. • Score a 100% rating on the Corporate Equality Index administered by the Human Rights Campaign. Recognition & Awards Thanks to the collaborative effort of our leadership team and our associates globally, several organizations recognized Staples for excellence in corporate responsibility. • For the 11th consecutive year, we were selected as a component of the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes (DJSI) for 2013/2014. • Named to the 2014 Global 100 Sustainability Index, one of the top measures in corporate sustainability analysis, published by Corporate Knights, a media, research and investment advisory company. Staples is one of two global retailers in the rankings and the only one in North America to rank. • Awarded “Best Place to Work for Diverse Managers” by Diversity MBA Magazine. • For the fourth straight year, earned 100% score on the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index. • Winner of Commonwealth Compacts’ Diversity Standout Award for our commitment to bringing more diverse hires to Boston and surrounding communities. • EPA Green Power Partner recognition: ranked #4 among all retailers, #7 among Fortune 500 companies and #8 in the U.S. (as of January 2014). • Named ENERGY STAR ® Partner of the Year — Sustained Excellence in 2014. • Received U.S. EPA’s 2013 Excellence in GHG Management (Goal Achievement Award). • Staples Canada received the 2014 Environmental Leader Project of the Year Award for its Easy on the Planet program. • Staples Advantage Canada received the Excellence in Corporate Responsibility (ECR) Award from Green Living Enterprises. • For the fourth consecutive year, Staples Advantage Canada received the Community Leadership Award of Excellence from the Canadian Office Products Association (COPA).
