To the Somerville House Community
Welcome to Parents
It was wonderful to see so many parents at our Welcome to Parents function on Tuesday evening. I trust that it
provided a warm welcome to our new parents, the opportunity to meet the members of our Executive team, many
staff and other parents, and an introduction to our community and encouragement to become involved. I thank Mrs
Wendy Cox, President, and members of the Parents and Friends’ Association, for supporting this function, which
was co-ordinated by our Communication and Admissions Unit, and congratulate all on a very successful evening.
Scholars Assembly
Our annual Scholars Assembly acknowledges the exceptional academic results of our previous year’s graduates
and provides an opportunity for us to celebrate academic excellence as a School community. On Monday, It was a
privilege to welcome back to the School, members of our Year 12, 2012 cohort who achieved supreme academic
excellence at the end of last year. The students were among those who achieved an OP 1-4 at the conclusion of
their Senior studies, the culmination of diligence, very hard work, consistent focus and effort, resilience in the face
of setbacks, and a determination to succeed.
To put the girls’ success into perspective, they represent 33.7% of Somerville House students, compared to 14.8%
of all OP-eligible students in Queensland who attained an OP1-4. 33.3% of our students achieved an A on the
QCS Test as opposed to 15.5% statewide and almost 100% (97.8%) of the cohort received an offer of a university
place through QTAC for this year, 51% their first preference, 86% one of their first three preferences. Bearing in
mind a number of students in the cohort did not submit a QTAC application as they have alternative plans for
overseas/interstate or Bond University study, a GAP year or other tertiary study this year, this is truly an
exceptional outcome.
We congratulate the students on their outstanding success and wish them well as they embark upon their university
studies and other ventures this year.
Staff Congratulations
As members of a dynamic learning organisation, Somerville House staff continue to engage in professional learning
and growth through involvement in the wider education community, presentation at conferences, service on
committees and boards, and formal university studies. We acknowledge the success of members of our academic
and corporate staff in their ongoing professional development.

Languages in Drama / Theatre and Education: highlighting diversity or blending cultures? at the International
Drama Educators Association (IDEA) World Conference in Paris later this year. We also congratulate Mrs Head
and Mrs Crouch on Somerville House’s selection by NIDA as a trial school for a series of online workshops to be
tested and implemented in schools throughout 2013. The focus of the workshops will be NIDA’s investigation of the
challenges of teaching practical workshops in an online capacity using a range of technologies available in schools.
This is national recognition and a supreme accolade for our Drama Department and for Somerville House.
CHAPLAIN'S CORNER
F A Kearney, Principal
Ms C O'Gorman
I imagine many of our School community had the chance to see the movie Les Miserables over the holidays. It is
an incredible portrayal of the power of grace to change lives, and reminds us of the power of God’s grace to also
change our lives. Grace means ‘undeserved favour’, and is linked with forgiveness. It is about being kind and
understanding to each other and giving second chances. The lead character Valjean is a decent man whose life is
ruined after nineteen years spent in prison for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his family. He then has his life turned
around when an elderly priest recognises his desperation and extends grace and forgiveness to him. This sets
Valjean on a new path where he then pays it forward by treating others in his life with the same grace and kindness
he has received.
Grace is a powerful theme in the Bible, and it is central to the Christian Gospel. God’s grace is not just an abstract
theological concept, but it is a practical reality which changes our lives in the same way that grace transformed
Valjean in Les Miserables. The Bible tells us of the most extraordinary act of grace there has ever been; God
sending His Son into the world to take the punishment for our sins and bring us from spiritual death to life.
Another interesting character in Les Miserables is Javert, the police inspector who pursues Valjean seeking to bring
him to justice. Javert’s approach is the antithesis of grace, a dogged determination to bring Valjean to justice and to
punish him to the full extent that he supposedly deserves. Javert is a man who believes in following the letter of the
law, every rule has to be obeyed. I am sure we all know people like Javert, people who are hard on others and will
not give an inch, people who are often also hard on themselves. As the story progresses Javert seems to have an
internal struggle with this issue, perhaps he begins to realise he cannot meet his own standards and perhaps he
begins to question whether his legalistic, driven approach is actually the best and whether his standards are
realistic.
These two characters leave us with a choice. Will we follow the path of grace in our dealings with each other and
with ourselves, or will we take that more legalistic unforgiving approach? I encourage you to live in grace, firstly
receiving God’s amazing grace extended to you through Jesus’ death, and secondly, extending grace, kindness
and forgiveness to others and yourself, realising that none of us is perfect. You might even change someone’s life
by treating them this way.
ACADEMIC IMPROVEMENT AWARDS: 2012
Awards were announced recently to acknowledge students in Middle School who showed significant academic
improvement throughout 2012. Grade Point Averages (GPA) of subject achievement levels were calculated for
each student for both semesters, and those who attained a positive difference of 1.0 or greater received an award
i.e., an average gain of at least one grade level per subject.
3

Even though comparing GPA levels is not statistically valid, the method does provide a convenient way of
identifying students who have displayed commendable academic progress. Conversely, it also identifies a small
number of students who may not have attained satisfactory progress and these students will continue to be
monitored and supported closely this year in order to reverse any decline in academic performance.
Congratulations to the following students who gained Improvement Awards as evidenced by their outstanding
academic progress during 2012 (* indicates greatest improvement):
Year 7: Tamara Allomes, Savannah Ardrey, Prudence Glasby*
Year 8: Sarah Chan, Emma Foots, Rose Nixon, Jessica Ren, Ainsley Walker, Anushka Wickramasuriya*
Artwork of the Week - ELIZABETH RACKEMANN Year 12
The Year 11 students at the very end of last year completed a week-long unit where they were asked to explore the
broad theme of ‘looking through’. The purpose of this quick task was for the students to realise that they could
solve a problem and produce an artwork in a limited amount of time without the necessity of prolonged, ponderous
thought. This sophisticated, subtle work is by Elizabeth Rackemann who is the Art Convenor for 2013.
CHIBA GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL VISIT: REQUEST FOR HOST FAMILIES Mrs S-J Feely, Japanese Teacher
This year from 21 July to 30 July, Somerville House will welcome twenty girls and two accompanying teachers from
our Japanese sister school, Chiba Girls’ High School. For many years this has been a successful homestay
experience and our students of Japanese look forward to welcoming the Chiba girls every secondo year. During
their stay, the girls from Chiba study English, under the direction of an English-as-a-second-language teacher,
participate in excursions and Japanese classes. I am currently seeking families willing to host a Japanese student.
Host families are required to provide transportation to and from school, meals and accommodation for the duration
of the home-stay. This real-life international Exchange is a truly valuable experience for students of both Somerville
House and Chiba Girls’ School. An Information Evening will be held for host families to apply for Blue Cards and to
provide more detailed information regarding the home-stay program. If you are interested in hosting a student,
please contact Mrs Feely by email 0903@somerville.qld.edu.au or call 3248 9220.
DEAN OF STUDENTS
Mrs K Graham
Well it’s official, words really can hurt us. Lisa Raffensperger’s recent article in the New Scientist, ‘Words can
never hurt me?’, confirms what most people already know, that taunting and cruel words actually hurt us in a
physical way as well as psychological way. (Raffensperger: 2012, 37). Researchers like Naomi Eisenberger at the
University of California have discovered areas of the brain – the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) to be
precise – surges with activity when we are physically hurt. As Eisenberger notes, ‘this is an important part of the
pain network, determining how upsetting we find an injury’. The more distressing we find an injury, basically the
more the dACC lights up.
Does our brain and body react to insults and social rejection as much as physical pain? It seems so. Researchers,
Ethan Kross at the University of Michigan, and Nathan DeWall of the University of Kentucky, found that the parts of
the brain’s sensory centres reflect similar physical discomfort as a result of a wound, as that of heartbreak. In other
words, ‘heartache can literally hurt’. Some people, on the other hand, are more resilient and are able to deal with
emotional upsets more pragmatically and take setbacks in their stride. Young people who have experienced more
traumas in their early years tend to have a more heightened sensitivity to emotional upsets which continues most of
their lives and these people feel more physical pain than others.
Adolescents, particularly, can be sensitive to a whole range of social emotional issues and to social rejection.
Psychiatrists believe that as the brain of a young person is still developing, it has a more exaggerated response to
any perceived slights or injustices. This will come as no ground-breaking news to most parents of teenagers.
Is there anything we can do to alleviate this type of pain? The answer, luckily, is a resounding ‘yes’. Giving
emotional support and comfort to those people experiencing painful social rejection can ease the physical pain felt,
according to the researchers. As parents and educators we can:
• Support young people through difficult emotional times and surprisingly it helps us to become more resilient
to setback in our own lives
• Listen empathetically to our students when they share emotional upsets
• Acknowledge the upset and offer advice if your child asks for it
• Comfort young people in times of need and suggest some strategies with other friends
• Seek medical help if necessary, some short term medication may assist – even panadol has been found to
help reduce the effects of psychological pain; and
• Seek help and support from the Heads of Year, the Dean of Students and the trained psychologists at
Somerville House.
BASKETBALL
Mrs S Pfingst & Mrs H Preston, Co-ordinators
BASKETBALL CLINIC: Last Saturday morning, fifty-five Somerville House students ranging from Year 6 to Year
12 attended the annual Basketball Clinic at the Murray Evans Sports and Aquatic Centre. It was a fantastic
opportunity for both beginners and seasoned players to learn and further develop key skills in Basketball. The
players were fortunate to be coached by a number of highly experienced and enthusiastic coaches. This is a great
preparation for the QGSSSA season which begins on 15 March. Our Captains for 2013, Alexa Lee and Emily
Bowden, attended the Clinic and were able to provide great leadership for the younger girls. Thanks are extended
to the parents who attended and assisted on the day. Basketball trials are being held this week and we look
forward to a great year with loads of participation and good sportswomanship.
The younger students were fortunate enough to have a surprise guest speaker, Libby Trickett. As an Old Girl of
Somerville House, she was most willing to give the girls some inspirational words on training hard and focusing on
the season ahead. We thank Libby in giving up her spare time.
CRICKET
Mr E Wise, Co-ordinator
Even with limited preparation due to last week’s weather damaging our training grounds, the Somerville House
Cricketers came out from Round 1 with some excellent results. Unfortunately, the Open team’s tight fielding was
not enough to defeat Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School’s powerful batting, but the two Div 1 teams came out on top,
beating Clayfield College and Brisbane Girls’ Grammar School, with both teams losing only two wickets. In Div 2,
Somerville 1 lost against the tough opposition of Brisbane State High and Somerville 2 defeated Moreton Bay
College. Good luck to all the girls in their next round of fixtures and a big thanks to Ms O’Gorman and Mrs Field for
giving up their time to come and support all the girls on Wednesday.
