SENIOR MUSIC PREFECTS AND CONVENORS 2013 The Music Prefects and Convenors have already been busy with events assisting with the organisation and preparation for current and future events in the Music Department. Thank you to the Music Prefects – Elizabeth John, Lilian To and also to the Music Convenors – Hannah Crossman, Homare Atkinson, Jordan Malone, Kavindri Kulasinghe and Suneeta Kamdar. We look forward to their continued contribution to the Music Department. CO-CURRICULAR MUSIC ENSEMBLE REHEARSALS All band, choir and string ensembles will now have started rehearsing. Please be sure to arrive on time for your rehearsals. It is also important, when encountering clashes with other co-curricular activities, to contact your ensemble director to let them not of any issues. Clashes can be sorted out very quickly if we know all the information. JUNIOR SCHOOL ENSEMBLES The Junior School Instrumental Ensembles made a very positive start to the year. Year 3 Strings and Year 5 Band Beginner Ensembles were very exciting sessions as students received new instruments to commence their instrumental program for the year. Cantabile Choir and Poco a Poco Choir have also commenced with a strong commitment from the students. Reminder: Poco a Poco Choir commences rehearsal at 7.30am on Monday mornings in E419. Junior Strings and Pizzicato Strings have also made an excellent start - they begin their rehearsals at 7.15am on Wednesday mornings. BAND STRING READING CAMP Band Reading Camp will take place on 16 and 17 February for Senior Concert Band, Intermediate Concert Band and Stage Band. The String Reading Day for Somerville Strings is also on Sunday 17 February. Dress is free dress, neat and casual. Please return any outstanding forms and payments to the Music Department as soon as possible. The purpose of this camp is to develop strong ensemble relationships and to achieve grounding in repertoire development early in the year. The aim of the camp is to achieve these goals in a friendly and enjoyable environment. The days each ensemble is to attend is indicated below. All members of these ensembles will be required to attend the camp as part of their involvement in the ensembles yearly calendar events. Those with other School co-curricular commitments that may clash are reminded to inform the respective Co-ordinators regarding potential clashes and then the respective Co-ordinators will consult and advise of an acceptable plan. The last European Tour was in 2010 and was a huge success, with performances in Italy and Austria. In the 2014 Tour, it is planned to visit Prague, Vienna, Salzburg, Innsbruck, Bolzano, Slovenia, Venice, Florence/Pisa and Rome. 10
Year 9 (2014) and onwards Music students from Senior Concert Band, Stage Band, Cantrice and Somerville String are eligible to go on the tour. Eligible students from other ensembles will be invited as well. Details and an Expression of Interest Letter will be distributed to students shortly. There will be an essential Information Evening on Thursday 16 May 6.30pm in the String Room E403 Level 4 Music Department. We look forward to your attendance at the Tour Information Evening. MUSIC UNIFORMS Students in Somerville House Choirs, Strings and Bands now wear the black Music uniform. All Music uniforms are available through the School Uniform Shop. Arrangements can also be made with the Uniform Shop to on-sell uniforms no longer required (black uniform only). Students should make arrangements to secure their Music uniform as soon as possible. Please note that the only ensembles that still wear the School uniform when performing are: Junior School Ensembles: Poco a Poco Choir, Year 3 Strings, Pizzicato Strings and Year 5 Band. Black Music uniform includes the following • Uniform black long skirt (skirt to touch ankles). • Double bass players, cellists, guitarists, lower brass players and saxophonists only may wear black pants. • Black Nehru blouse. • Black stockings – not trouser socks. • Black court shoes –small heel only (Junior School students wear school shoes). • Silver hair ribbons – not green • Hair - off the face; shoulder length hair should be in a ponytail • No makeup or jewellery apart from sleepers 2013 AUSTRALIAN SCHOOLS COMBINED MUSIC FESTIVAL Forms are due for return to the Music Department no later than Monday 25 February. As soon as your nomination has been confirmed, full details of costs and timetables will be forwarded to you. DIRECTOR OF SPORT Mrs A Field BASKETBALL Mrs S Pfingst & Mrs H Preston, Co-ordinators BASKETBALL CLINIC: Last Saturday morning, fifty-five Somerville House students ranging from Year 6 to Year 12 attended the annual Basketball Clinic at the Murray Evans Sports and Aquatic Centre. It was a fantastic opportunity for both beginners and seasoned players to learn and further develop key skills in Basketball. The players were fortunate to be coached by a number of highly experienced and enthusiastic coaches. This is a great preparation for the QGSSSA season which begins on 15 March. Our Captains for 2013, Alexa Lee and Emily Bowden, attended the Clinic and were able to provide great leadership for the younger girls. Thanks are extended to the parents who attended and assisted on the day. Basketball trials are being held this week and we look forward to a great year with loads of participation and good sportswomanship. The younger students were fortunate enough to have a surprise guest speaker, Libby Trickett. As an Old Girl of Somerville House, she was most willing to give the girls some inspirational words on training hard and focusing on the season ahead. We thank Libby in giving up her spare time. CRICKET Mr E Wise, Co-ordinator Even with limited preparation due to last week’s weather damaging our training grounds, the Somerville House Cricketers came out from Round 1 with some excellent results. Unfortunately, the Open team’s tight fielding was not enough to defeat Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School’s powerful batting, but the two Div 1 teams came out on top, beating Clayfield College and Brisbane Girls’ Grammar School, with both teams losing only two wickets. In Div 2, Somerville 1 lost against the tough opposition of Brisbane State High and Somerville 2 defeated Moreton Bay College. Good luck to all the girls in their next round of fixtures and a big thanks to Ms O’Gorman and Mrs Field for giving up their time to come and support all the girls on Wednesday.
