Mrs Megan Ball, Dean of Academic Planning and Professional Learning, completed her MBA (Southern Cross University) in 2011, graduating in 2012. Mrs Jannine McGarry, Reference Librarian, completed her Graduate Diploma of Education (University of Queensland) in 2011, graduating in 2012. Mr Tegh Kalsi, Network Administrator, completed his Bachelor of Information Technology (Queensland University of Technology), graduating in December 2012. Mrs Dale MacGregor, Junior School Christian Education teacher, completed her Master of Religious Education in 2012 and will graduate in March this year. Mrs Annette Head, Head of Drama, has been elected to the 2013 Drama Queensland Management Committee as Vice-President Planning. In addition, Mrs Head and Mrs Michelle Crouch, Drama teacher, have been accepted to present a joint paper Languages in Drama / Theatre and Education: highlighting diversity or blending cultures? at the International Drama Educators Association (IDEA) World Conference in Paris later this year. We also congratulate Mrs Head and Mrs Crouch on Somerville House’s selection by NIDA as a trial school for a series of online workshops to be tested and implemented in schools throughout 2013. The focus of the workshops will be NIDA’s investigation of the challenges of teaching practical workshops in an online capacity using a range of technologies available in schools. This is national recognition and a supreme accolade for our Drama Department and for Somerville House. CHAPLAIN'S CORNER F A Kearney, Principal Ms C O'Gorman I imagine many of our School community had the chance to see the movie Les Miserables over the holidays. It is an incredible portrayal of the power of grace to change lives, and reminds us of the power of God’s grace to also change our lives. Grace means ‘undeserved favour’, and is linked with forgiveness. It is about being kind and understanding to each other and giving second chances. The lead character Valjean is a decent man whose life is ruined after nineteen years spent in prison for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his family. He then has his life turned around when an elderly priest recognises his desperation and extends grace and forgiveness to him. This sets Valjean on a new path where he then pays it forward by treating others in his life with the same grace and kindness he has received. Grace is a powerful theme in the Bible, and it is central to the Christian Gospel. God’s grace is not just an abstract theological concept, but it is a practical reality which changes our lives in the same way that grace transformed Valjean in Les Miserables. The Bible tells us of the most extraordinary act of grace there has ever been; God sending His Son into the world to take the punishment for our sins and bring us from spiritual death to life. Another interesting character in Les Miserables is Javert, the police inspector who pursues Valjean seeking to bring him to justice. Javert’s approach is the antithesis of grace, a dogged determination to bring Valjean to justice and to punish him to the full extent that he supposedly deserves. Javert is a man who believes in following the letter of the law, every rule has to be obeyed. I am sure we all know people like Javert, people who are hard on others and will not give an inch, people who are often also hard on themselves. As the story progresses Javert seems to have an internal struggle with this issue, perhaps he begins to realise he cannot meet his own standards and perhaps he begins to question whether his legalistic, driven approach is actually the best and whether his standards are realistic. These two characters leave us with a choice. Will we follow the path of grace in our dealings with each other and with ourselves, or will we take that more legalistic unforgiving approach? I encourage you to live in grace, firstly receiving God’s amazing grace extended to you through Jesus’ death, and secondly, extending grace, kindness and forgiveness to others and yourself, realising that none of us is perfect. You might even change someone’s life by treating them this way. COME TO CHAPEL@SOMERVILLE ON SUNDAY 24 FEBRUARY! The Senior School Family Worship Service for 2013 will be held on Sunday 24 February at 9.00am in the Somerville House Chapel, followed by morning tea in the Undercover Mall. All Senior School students and their 2
families are warmly welcome to attend. No RSVP required. A free-will offering for Queensland’s flood-affected families will be taken at this service. Students wear green uniforms but hat or blazer are not required. ACADEMIC IMPROVEMENT AWARDS: 2012 Awards were announced recently to acknowledge students in Middle School who showed significant academic improvement throughout 2012. Grade Point Averages (GPA) of subject achievement levels were calculated for each student for both semesters, and those who attained a positive difference of 1.0 or greater received an award i.e., an average gain of at least one grade level per subject. 3
