During her address Mrs Kearney detailed elements of the School’s Strategic Intent and 2013 projects to be undertaken as part of the School’s Master Plan (A 2020 Vision) which will systematically rebuild parts of the school, construct new buildings and refurbish existing spaces to provide world class facilities and resources for our students today and in the future. Guests also heard from the Presidents of the P&F, the Foundation and the Old Girls’ Association regarding ways parents can become involved in their daughter’s lives and opportunities for engagement with our school community, including support groups and school events including the upcoming Somerville House Ball. Thank you to those who were able to attend. The evening provided a warm welcome to all members of the Somerville House community for the start of the school year and a special welcome to new parents to the School. HEALTH CENTRE Mrs L Marinos A VERY IMPORTANT MESSAGE FOR THE HEALTH OF YOUR CHILD The Brisbane City Council School-based immunisation team will be visiting the Somerville House School Health Centre on 21 February (11.15am to 12.30pm) to provide free vaccinations for Hepatitis B dose 1 and also offered is the HPV vaccination (Gardacil) to protect against the Human Papillomavirus. The vaccinations will be conducted at our School Health Centre by a team of specially trained registered nurses. A consent form for each vaccination has been provided to all Year 8 parents via post and email. Only students who have a completed and signed vaccination consent form will be eligible to receive the free vaccination(s). If you have arranged for your daughter to be immunised privately, please send a copy of the signed vaccination by your doctor so that we may update your daughter’s medical records, or notify the Health Centre by email at healthcentre@somerville.qld.edu.au Parents are encouraged to ensure their children have breakfast and morning tea on the morning of vaccination. P&F NEWS P&F MEETING The Somerville House P&F Association welcomes all parents and friends to the next General Meeting on 19 February in The Chambers (Old Town Hall) from 7.00pm for refreshments and meeting from 7.30 to 9.30 pm. There will be a report from our Principal, Mrs Flo Kearney, updates from the Support Groups and other discussions. Please email apologies or agenda items. FATHER AND DAUGHTER FISHING & ADVENTURE WEEKEND The Junior School Father & Daughter Fishing & Adventure Weekend is being held on 8-10 March. This event is open to all girls from Prep to Year 6. Held annually and run by a Somerville House father, it is a great way for dads to meet other dads as well as their daughter’s friends. Lots of fun for everyone with activities on offer like camping, fishing, abseiling, canoeing and a bonfire. SOMERFARE TUCKSHOP NEWS TERM 1, 2013 Hooray! Welcome back to Somerfare for 2013. With the year well and truly under way we are in full swing once again. Our staff members are Genevieve Vever, Lisa Wood and Helen Healy. We are located on the ground floor of the Junior School Building and our opening times are from 7.45am to 1.30pm Monday – Friday. We would like to take this opportunity to welcome back our existing volunteers and welcome all the new volunteers who have joined our teams this year. We thank all of you for your time and commitment in helping prepare and deliver food for our School community. We rely heavily on our volunteers to help our daily routine run smoothly and we literally couldn't do it without you! SOMERFARE SMART CHOICES MENU TERM 1 We offer light breakfast, morning tea and lunch. In compliance with Queensland Smart Choices, we continue to offer healthy fresh foods including fresh sandwiches, salads and wraps, fruit and yoghurt. Some of our hot food items include homemade pastas, fried rice, Moroccan couscous and nachos. We offer vegetarian and gluten-free options also. You will notice a few new additions this term such as junior-serve salads and meal deals. SOMERFARE SPECIALS We still offer the ever popular: - sushi on Mondays and Fridays - Vietnamese rolls on Fridays - Tuesday toasties Our new homemade specials for this term are: - new-look Nachos on Wednesdays - Moroccan couscous on Thursdays. We do change the menu from time to time so keep an eye out in the Newsletter and on Flexischools for new items. A copy of our menu is available on the Somerville House website and also on the Flexischool website. ONLINE ORDERING WITH FLEXISCHOOLS If you haven't already done so, it is not too late to register with FLEXISCHOOLS to access our ONLINE ORDERING system – it is very straightforward and will only take a few minutes. All our menu items are on there - with the Smart Choices indicators - and you can even order in advance or place a standing order for the term. It is a more efficient system for everyone and is quick and easy to use. Take the worry out of writing a bag and finding the right change and go online! Note that orders must be placed before 8.30am. For more information please go to www.flexischools.com.au It is still okay to place a paper bag order over the counter – orders for morning tea must be in before school and lunch can be before school or at morning tea time. Please remember to write student name, class and lunch or morning tea on the paper bag. Please note that Somerfare does not offer IOUs so please ensure students have money when purchasing over the counter or when placing an order over the counter. Thank you. JUNIOR SCHOOL SOMERFARE TUCKSHOP RULES Just a reminder that Junior School Students (Years Prep to 6) are NOT permitted at Somerfare at morning tea or before 8.00am. They are permitted ONLY after the second bell at lunch time. Junior School students must purchase their morning tea and lunch by placing an order. Remember, ordering online is easy and can be done well in advance. Paper bag orders can be handed in over the counter before school or placed in the box at the Junior School Reception before 8.45am. The filled orders then go into designated Tuckshop Class boxes which are collected by Tuckshop Monitors from each class just before the service of morning tea and lunch. If a student cannot find her order, then she must see her teacher or the teachers on duty before coming down to the Tuckshop to enquire. DIRECTOR OF CO-CURRICULUM Mr Allan Legge SUPPORT GROUPS – many of our co-curricular activities rely on the support of the parent body to enhance the programs we can offer the students. Please look out for notices re Support Group meetings in this publication. The details (dates, venues etc) of Support Group meetings are sent to registered parents from the Support Groups secretaries and they are also listed in the School calendar (please see Parent Lounge for up-to-date information). ALL parents are welcome to attend to hear more about the activity that their daughter is involved in and to find ways that they can help and support.
