Here are some tips to help keep your pet happier and safe:<br />
• If you’re aware your dog is fearful of fi reworks, consult your vet<br />
who may reccommend a behaviourist to help with the problem<br />
- depending on the severity of suffering. This wont be resolved<br />
quickly but will give you something to work for for the following year.<br />
• Take your dog on a long walk during daytime to ensure they’re tired,<br />
as they will be less likely to react to the festivities.<br />
• Canine ear plugs can be used to dull the noise and, used in<br />
conjunction with a TV or radio with the sound up, can help further.<br />
• Ensure windows are closed and curtains drawn. Try to engage your<br />
dog with a food puzzle or game. Don’t force it if they are unwilling.<br />
• Don’t ‘fuss’ over your dog when reacting to the noise, as this can<br />
have the opposite effect of what you are trying to achieve. Stay<br />
calm and ignore until they produce a behaviour you can reward.<br />
• Never punish or get frustrated when your pet is in a fearful state - it<br />
is a natural behaviour that can be overcome with time and patience.<br />
• Make sure your pet’s ID is secure, just in case they do escape!<br />
• Make sure they have a safe place to go - to hide if they so wish.<br />
