KYDS member wins
award for best actress
From Kerry Stocker, Publicity
Offi cer.
KYDS are delighted that Rachel
Shortland has been awarded
the NETG Showcase Award for
Best Young Actress at this year’s
North Essex Theatre Guild award
ceremony in Clacton!
Rachel has been acting with KYDS
since our very fi rst production
of Dracula Spectacular in 2009.
Rachel received the award for her
exceptional performance as Squire
Trelawney in Treasure Island.
The NETG adjudicator described
Rachel’s performance as “the
outstanding performance in the
show... delightful and engaging”.
KYDS are thrilled that Rachel has
fi nally received the recognition that
she deserves for the dedication and
enthusiasm she puts in to all of her
roles on stage.
KYDS would also like to celebrate
the success of Jodie Cole who
Dear Editor
LIFE Magazine reaches
NZ
I have just received A Life magazine
from my daughter in law, Val
Carpenter-Green. What a lovely
interesting magazine. My wife,
Dawn, and I have visited Mersea
Island and tucked into a fi ne meal
at the Shed – French loaf, bottle
of wine and the biggest platter of
delicious sea food ever.
We owned a 33ft ketch, 8 tonne,
for 18 years which we have sailed
round our coast. I now own a 36
Olly Engerling which was sailed
down to New Zealand via the
Panama Canal. I keep her on a
swing mooring at our small harbour
at Matiatia, on Waiheke Island,
where we live. My old yacht was
called Sea Call, as the Swedish
name for my new boat didn’t suit
our tongues, I renamed her ‘Ahoy’.
Waiheke Island is half an hour from
Auckland in a fast ferry, permanent
population about 8,000. Many
commute for work ashore, lots of
vineyards, beaches, good fi shing.
Captain Cook passed by here a few
years ago and there is a durville
in the Hauraki Gulf so the French
have called here it would seem.
Well in this computer age all the
blurb can be found on the Net.
I just felt I should commend your
magazine and all your helpers.
Ao-tea-roa – the land of the long
white cloud.
Yours, Peter Green & Dawn Harvey
Thank you Peter and Dawn, We
know that we distribute 16,000
copies of the LIFE magazines –
we know that they are read from
Rowhedge via Mersea, Tiptree,
Maldon and the villages - to
Bradwell – but New Zealand – that
has to be a fi rst.!! Ed.
Parish Council News
Edwardian Evening
The chairman reported that he has
been advised by the organisers of
the Edwardian evenings, held for
the past few years, that there will
be no such event this year. Instead
an alternative event is being
considered for next year.
Tiptree Residents’ Association (TRA)
Cllr John Elliott advised the council
that the TRA has been offi cially
disbanded, and handed the balance
of moneys (£219) held in TRA funds
over to the parish council to be
spent specifi cally on the community
centre.
Brook House
The issue of Brook House, Maldon
Road was raised yet again. It
appears that a London fi rm is
interested in purchasing the building
but that the building must fi rst be
in the ownership of Colchester BC
which has not the funds available at
present. It was noted that the cost
of erecting scaffolding and covering
the building completely would be
£130/140,000.
Salt supplies
It was reported that only four replies
have been received from volunteers
prepared to store a supply of salt
and to spread it on nearby roads/
footways during wintry weather.
This being the case, it is unlikely
that the parish can take part in
the scheme as it has no means of
storing a large quantity of salt. It
was noted that, of the 281 parishes
in the Colchester area, only 71
have signed up to the scheme. The
local volunteers will be thanked for
their interest
Police report
A report from the local Police was
received. However, councillors
expressed disappointment that no
offi cer was present to compare
trends in crime fi gures locally. With
this end in view they will request a
meeting with both senior and local
offi cers.
Open space
It was noted that what councillors
hoped would be open space for
children’s play on the Grange Road
development has been designated
as ‘village green’ and that it is
bordered on two sides by busy
roads. This, contended councillors,
is not at all suitable for children’s
play. They will request a meeting
with Colchester BC to discuss the
matter.
Parish ‘collective’ Councillors
agreed to the forming of a
‘collective working party’ of
representatives of local parish
councils which, together with
borough councillors and the local
MP, would meet to discuss issues
– such as aspects of planning and
of highways – which are common
to them all in the hope of resolving
such issues more speedily.
Drainage matters
Councillors accepted an Essex
CC report on sustainable drainage
systems and its forward planning
but suggested that greater
emphasis should be placed on the
clearing of ditches and waterways
which is the main reason for
fl ooding problems.
Caxton Close play area
Councillors agreed in principle to
the taking over of the play area
but would require 106 funding
from the developers for ongoing
maintenance together with funding
from Colchester BC for the long
term replacement of equipment –
as happens in Colchester.
Chief executive
Matters to be discussed with
Colchester BC’s chief executive, at
a meeting arranged with the council
chairman and vice chairman, were
suggested by councillors. It was
noted that the wish of the local
council is to initiate positive lines of
communication with Colchester BC
and settle long standing projects so
that the parish council can go ahead
with future plans.
War memorial
Councillors agreed to the alteration
of Tiptree’s War Memorial to
accommodate the names of fi ve
Tolleshunt Knights residents who
died in the Second World War.
Ramblers’ Association
A request for a grant was received
from the national Ramblers’
Association. Councillors noted that
the council’s policy is to award
grants only to local organisations
but that, in view of the council’s
aim to arrange circular footpath
walks in and around Tiptree with,
perhaps, the help of the Ramblers’
Association, they will make a
donation to its local branch
Operation Christmas Child
Each year the people of Tiptree
provide Christmas gifts for children
around the world who live in the
poorest of conditions. Leafl ets with
information on suitable gifts that
can help fi ll a covered shoe box
for a boy or girl in your chosen age
range, are available in St Luke’s
lobby, the Cheap Shop, Oasis
bookshop or on 01621 816564. The
closing date by which boxes should
be received at 50 Perry Road will
be November 11 – so, pick up your
Registered
Osteopaths
The Courtyard Clinic was established in 2000 and over
the past 12 years has successfully treated thousands
of patients with a range of conditions. Our Male and
Female practitioners are registered with the General
Osteopathic Council and undergo continuous training in
order to maintain standards and stay at the forefront of
the profession.
We are located in the heart of Maldon adjacent to the
White Horse car park and our team aim to provide the
best possible care in pleasant surroundings. If you wish
to discuss an injury or treatment, please contact us.
As a change from our usual editorial, we
thought some background to the history of
Osteopathy would be useful and informative.
We are often asked by our patients “What did
people used to do before Osteopaths?”. In fact,
forms of manipulative treatment have been
practiced in various ways for thousands of years!
In the early days these practitioners were called
bone setters. They would deal with anything
from fractures to deformities and painful joints.
Hippocrates who is considered ‘the father of
medicine’ was a Greek Physician around 460
- 375 BC. He left many volumes of work on the
observation and treatment of disease including
at least three works on the bones and joints
entitled: On Fractures; On the Articulations; and
On Setting Joints by Leverage. Hippocrates is
believed to have said “look well to the spine for
the cause of disease”. He noticed that symptoms
spread over the area supplied by spinal nerves
originating at diseased vertebrae, as well as
certain paralytic symptoms caused by severe
injuries to the spinal column. For example, in the
treatment of spinal curvatures, he recommended
that the patient be placed face-down upon a
bench with straps placed under the arm pits and
across the chest, and around the knees and
ankles, so that traction could be applied from
both ends of the bench while the correction was
being made. (You will be pleased to know that at
The Courtyard Clinic we have recently stopped
using this practice !!!). Cato the Elder, a Roman
statesman (234-149 BC) practiced bone setting
during the time of the Roman republic.
Quackery (unqualifi ed practitioners) ran
rampant in the 18th century as doctors were not
always available particularly in country areas.
Manipulation, bone setting and many other
approaches to health were being practised.
However, qualifi ed practitioners were busy
making contributions. Sir James Paget, a
famous surgeon and authority on bone diseases
in the 19th century, was one of the qualifi ed
practitioners who observed that there was
actually some value in many of the manipulations
performed by the bonesetter; in a lecture entitled
“Cases That Bonesetters Cure,” published in the
British Medical Journal, January 1867, he stated:
“Few of you are likely to practice without having a
bone-setter for a rival; and if he can cure a case
which you have failed to cure, his fortune may
be made and yours marred.... Learn, then, to
imitate what is good and avoid what is bad in the
practice of bone-setters.”
Andrew Taylor Still proposed Osteopathy as
a form of healthcare in 22nd June 1874 when
he broke with orthodox medicine and ‘fl ung the
banner of osteopathy to the breeze’.
Still was born in 1828 in Lee County in Virginia.
As a teenager he was a hunter, skinning the
animals he shot and selling the hides. He also
developed an early interest in anatomy. His
father was a minister and doctor and Still would
follow his father observing him on his rounds.
Through vigorous self-study and observation,
he developed his skills as a physician. With
the addition of some formal training he was
eventually awarded an M.D degree by the state
of Missouri.
During the Civil War
he was a captain
in the Union Army,
later rising to the
rank of major. He
used his skills to
help the wounded,
whilst at the same
time furthering his
knowledge and
understanding of
health and the
human body.
Andrew Taylor Still
He worked primarily through the musculo-skeletal
system and developed philosophies of treatment
based on the body’s natural immunity. This
resulted in the creation of Osteopathy and Still
severing links with Allopathy in 22nd June 1874.
It wasn’t until 1889 he fi nally coined the term
‘Osteopathy’, having initially gone by terms such
as ‘magnetic healer’ and ‘lightening bone setter’.
The term derives from two Greek words: ‘osteon’
meaning bone, and ‘pathos’ meaning suffering.
Commonly today this is wrongly interpreted,
translating to bone-disease. The intended
meaning of ‘pathos’ was supposed to be seen
as; ‘sensitive to’ or ‘responding to’, indicating the
importance of the consideration of the body’s
skeletal structure.
As his fame grew, many requests came to Still to
teach his new method of healing. The American
School of Osteopathy (ASO) was founded in
1892 in Kirksville, Missouri. Today Osteopathy
is a highly regulated and highly regarded form
of healthcare with some plus 2,000 osteopaths
practising in the UK alone. The majority are in
private practise but there is increasing integration
with the NHS both with directly employed
practitioners and with regional contracts.
Autumn show
The Tiptree Garden Club and
Horticultural Society’s Autumn
Show was held in Thurstable
School on September 8th at 2pm.
Parish council
Before the start of the meeting,
Craig Last of Colchester
Community Voluntary Services
(CCVS) explained to councillors the
transport scheme and shopmobility
project which have been in
operation for a number of years.
These schemes are designed for
those who have diffi culty, because
of disability, with accessing normal
transport. There is, he said, the
possibility of a weekly bus service
to Colchester serving Tiptree and
the surrounding villages – if funding
can be found. Volunteer drivers,
who would receive reimbursement,
are always being sought to offer the
disabled a door-to-door service.
Ransom Road/Church Road
It was noted that the parish
council has been ‘pushing’ for
improvements to this junction for
20 years and that it has recently
lost its priority status on the Essex
CC agenda. Councillors decided
to invite county councillor John
Jowers to a meeting to discuss the
reasons for this loss of priority; the
hope was expressed that some of
the Ransom Road residents would
attend this meeting.
Potholes
It was noted that all but two of the
pothole surveys undertaken by
councillors had now been received.
Minor repairs are being carried
out by the highways department
with longer term works to come in
November onwards. It was noted
that highway offi cials had decided
that a very large and deep pothole
at the Rectory Road/Anchor Road
junction does not meet criteria. It
was suggested that the offi cial had
mistaken the reported location and
a revisit will be requested.
Parking restrictions
A request will be made to
Colchester BC for the extension of
double yellow lines along Rectory
Road near the junction with Church
Road, where parking can prove
a potential hazard, and also for
greater enforcement on all existing
yellow lines.
Grove Road playing field
It was reported that test pits have
been dug and the subsoil found
suitable for foundations for the
skatepark and that quotes for fencing
for the proposed layout at the bottom
of the fi eld are to be invited.
Aperture
By Robert Scott - Marshlands Photographic
The aperture refers to the size
of the whole created in the lens
when the shutter is pressed in the
lens which allows light to fall onto
the senor or fi lm and record an
image.
The aperture setting and
shutter speed have a reciprocal
relationship whereby if one of
these changes the other must
also change in a corresponding
amount to ensure that the image
is correctly exposed, these
increments are often referred to
as ‘stops’.
The aperture values do not have
an obvious relationship common
apertures found on lens are
2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22. As the
aperture value moves from left
to right on this scale, each value
represents a halving of the size
of the aperture, thus reducing
the quantity of light reaching the
sensor.
The aperture value is often
preceded by an ‘f’ so in your
viewfi nder or on the back of your
viewing screen the aperture will be
show as f 5.6. On Nikon cameras
you can use aperture priority mode
which is represented by an A. The
aperture is one of the factors that
determines the depth of fi eld in an
image, ie which part of the image
is in focus and which is not. (The
distance you are from the point of
focus and the focal length of the
lens also contributes.)
If you use a large aperture,
traditionally used in portrait
photography, such as f2.8 and
focus on a person’s eyes items
behind the person may well be
blurred, this technique is used to
create a focal point in the image,
alternatively if you are using a
small aperture, traditionally used
in landscape photography, such
as f16, the intention is to have
the entire image in focus. How
can f2.8 be larger than f16? This
is because the aperture should
correctly be written as 1/2.8 the
‘1 divided by’ element of this is
omitted on cameras.
The photograph shown of a spider
was taken with an aperture of
2.8 which blurred all detail in
the background removing any
distracting elements from the
photograph.
Parish tractor
The parish maintenance worker
attended the meeting in order to
report to councillors on the parish
tractor. This, he said, is too big to
meet the needs of the parish and
he advised on a smaller, more
suitable model. The maintenance
worker was asked to part-exchange
the parish’s tractor for a suitable
second-hand one.
Zebra crossings
Two requests from residents
were received for zebra crossings
outside Orchard Lodge and near to
51a Station Road. It was noted that
neither of these locations meets the
criteria for such crossings and has
no record of accidents. A letter will
be sent to the residents who made
the requests informing them of this
and suggesting that there are road
improvements with a higher priority
in the village.
Banners
Consent was given to two local
organisations – Tiptree Preschool
Playgroup and Kids Youth
Drama Society (KYDS) to display
banners on the railings at Grove
Lake, adjacent to Church Road,
on condition that the dimensions
of these do not exceed three by
two feet and are displayed for
one week prior to the events they
publicise.
Committee’s work
It was agreed that the committee
should continue to meet quarterly.
Councillors would be pleased to
hear from anyone who is prepared
to walk Tiptree’s footpaths (through
the countryside) and to report to
the parish clerk any problem(s)
which they encounter. A plan/map
of a number of circular walks of
varying distances was suggested.
Councillors Martyn Warnes and
John Calini offered to progress
ideas for this and to report back to
the next meeting.
Coffee Morning
The coffee morning organised
by Mrs Caroline Mason and her
daughter Joanna, which was held
in St Luke’s extension on Saturday
September 8, raised the huge
sum of £2,900, all of which will be
donated to Colchester COPES
(Cancer Support Group). Mrs
Mason and Joanna wish to thank all
who helped with or supported this
event in any way.
Windmill Green
It was noted that the surface is
becoming very uneven, to the point
where the machinery cannot cut the
grass properly. It was suggested
that topsoil ‘spoils’ from the playing
fi eld might be spread on the green
and the area reseeded.
A large number of children,
accompanied by adults, attended
the fi rst meeting of Messy Church
after school on Friday September 7
in St Luke’s extension.
There were lots of varied craft
activities on offer for the children,
with much adult help/supervision,
a short time of devotions in church,
followed by a hearty meal for
everyone.
Messy Church will be meeting on
the fi rst Friday of every month when
all children will be welcome – but
must be accompanied by an adult.
Planters
It was reported that winter plants for
available and several councillors
offered to help to plant them.
Buses
Especially in view of the
prominence given to the disabled
through the paralympic games
councillors again expressed
concern at the poor state of buses
used on routes through Tiptree, in
particular buses that do not have a
the disabled.
Councillors will write to Priti Patel
Legal Matters By Bawtrees LLP
When should I make a Lasting
Power of Attorney?
Just recently I was contacted by the daughter of an elderly mother who
was enquiring how she could legally assist with her mother’s affairs. The
mother’s physical and mental health had recently taken a turn for the
worse and there were various issues that needed addressing.
This is not an unusual situation and is one that I often see. On this
occasion I was able to obtain a Lasting Power of Attorney so that the
daughter could take care of her mother’s affairs. However, it was made
more diffi cult by the mother’s poor health and the daughter was unable
to do anything for three months whilst the Offi ce of the Public Guardian
processed the application.
Occasionally it is too late to obtain a Lasting Power of Attorney. In order to
grant a Lasting Power of Attorney the person making the Power of Attorney
(the donor) must have mental capacity. If the person no longer has mental
capacity it is necessary to apply to the Court of Protection for the power
to assist. That process usually takes six to eight months and is more
expensive than the process of applying for a Lasting Power of Attorney.
In answer to the original question, I would recommend that this issue is
considered as early as possible, whilst the donor still has good physical
and mental health.
All Powers of Attorney made after 1st October 2007 must be registered
at the Offi ce of the Public Guardian before they can be used by the
Attorneys.
Escape to St Luke’s this half term!!
In the summer 2012, St Luke’s School in Tiptree embarked on an innovative school holiday programme
called ‘ESCAPE’ , to meet the needs of children and parents in the school holidays.
The club was a great success with plenty of
children enjoying the activities and we will
endeavour to continue this service to the
community.
We restructured our approach to holiday
childcare and have made it more accessible
for the community. We also have the funding
‘Awards For All’ which means lone parents,
parents on a low income and young carers may
qualify for a free place.
ESCAPE offers basic childcare between the
hours of 8am and 6pm, with food included, where
a fun and appealing activity programme will be
led by qualifi ed staff.
In addition to the full day of childcare at £24 per
day, we are able to be fl exible enough to offer
half day sessions at £12per session as well
as 2 hour activities slots in both morning and
afternoon for £8 per session. Availability can vary
so booking is advised.
In today’s social and economic climate, the
question of quality, affordable holiday childcare is
raised. Here at St Luke’s ESCAPE holiday club,
we aim to be the number one quality childcare
provider in the local community and promise
parents we will give them value for money and a
great experience for their children.
Our low and reasonable fees mean we are able
to introduce activities to the children that will
ensure their enjoyment will be our priority. All
members of staff are qualifi ed and CRB checked.
The next half term is October 29th - November
2nd and ESCAPE can offer families the
following: Mobile zoo, Musical theatre, Golf,
‘Olymkids’, modern music and archery amongst
others. We will also offer various creative
workshops and activities such as, cooking,
T-shirt painting and modelling.
St Luke’s can also offer a breakfast club and the
Twilight after school club for families who need
extra help with childcare, again the rates are
reasonable and healthy food is included.
We offer a variety of toys, games and activities
under supervision so your children can relax and
enjoy a restful period before and after school.
Mersea’s Paralympian From Hannah
OK, so the events of the past few days are
starting to sink in....
As a team, we are feeling incredibly numb, and
slightly dumbfounded about what happened. In
our minds we pulled ourselves back into a medal
position, and we did that ON THE WATERwhere
it really matters.
What matters now is that WE realise that WE
achieved our goal and even though we did not
get that piece of metal we had hoped for, its
about more than that and people who know
us will understand that it has been about the
journey...
There are too many people to thank individually,
but for starters, our Coach Mark Rushall, he
fought so hard for us, and the emotions were
tough to come to terms with, but he held us all
together, and he’s the reason that we made the
comeback, and we are strong as a team.
Our amazing support staff behind the scenes,
thanks for all the jokes and for keeping us
positive; Sparky, Dave, Alan, Libby, Tzaneen,
Lilly, Ben, Emily, Sasha, Craig and Peter.
Of course our sponsors; Nielsen, Learning and
Skills Solutions, Grainger, RAF Benevolent Fund,
BMW Cooper, Jon Wood, Harken, Marlow, Volvo,
Dave Atkinson, Richard Matthews and all the
others that have kept the programme running...
Our tuning crew over the past few years; Keith,
Simon, Rachael, Penny, Matt, Graeme, Hamish,
Dan, Tom, Richard, Will, James, Mark, Scotland,
Ian, Mary, Andrea, Guy, Andrew, Jonny, Meg and
all the others, you put the hours in, you are part
of our team, and we thank you for pushing us so
hard!
Also a massive thanks to our behind the scenes
people: Firstly, my Mum
(Tesco Mum of the Year!) for the endless phone
calls, the logistical
support, the sausage rolls and the sandwiches,
plus the constant fundraising, and being the
only person we know able to hold up Heathrow
airport, get the nose cone of an aircraft removed
in order to get a new mast halfway across the
world to the Team!!
Ruth (Steve’s girlfriend) for being the Team’s
biggest fan, having the T-shirts made and the
friends and family looked after, plus the always
smiling face!
Abby- Thanks for the cheesy sayings, the
inappropriate comments, turning up in the boat
park to help wash boats and running around
Weymouth in search of shackles, plus standing
on a street corner without fail everyday of the
Games to deliver the teams favourite sandwiches
and huge amounts of snacks!
Finally, Alex, Ian, James and Steve you know
what you did to get our boats ready for the
Games, and in the right place at the right time,
and we thank you for those late nights and
perhaps we owe you a few hours sleep! But trust
us when we say, the boats are beautiful and you
make that happen..
Finally to our friends and family, to everyone that
made the trip to
Weymouth and who spent hours at Castle
Cove cheering us on. All of the West Mersea
Community that sent personal messages of
support and a special thank you to Liz Harrisson
and Rachel Gozzett for the Mersea Wave
and picnic all of the West Mersea Yacht Club
members including the Bollingbroke family and
Sue Clifford for following our progress, you guys
we would be nowhere, and your support means
the world to us.
So I think this is the world’s longest update, but
all we really want to say is THANK YOU!
Please don’t be sad for us be happy that we are
still alive and breathing and will keep fi ghting ‘til
the end...
£100 OFF YOUR BOOKING!
Exclusive LIFE Magazine reader offer!
This is the month to tidy up your herbaceous borders, cutting back the
stems and foliage of Lupins, Peonies, Delphiniums, Crocosia, Shasta
daisies and Cranesbill Geraniums etc. Leave dahlias until they have seen
the fi rst heavy frost, then they can be cut back using a slanting cut on
the stems. Either leave them to overwinter in the fl ower bed or lift and
overwinter in a frost free place after turning them upside down to drain
the stems and wrapping them in lots of newspaper and placing them in a
cardboard box perhaps. If you continue to dead head regularly they may
well bloom until November. If you leave the tubers in the ground they
may survive the winter months it will most likely be because the soil is too
waterlogged, not because of water and snow.
Lawns
Last cuts may take place this month according to the weather conditions.
Raise the cutter height on your lawn mower and keep sweeping the lawn to
remove leaves and other debris. This is an ideal month to lay turf.
Roses
At the end of October I always prune my two shrub roses reducing all stems
by a third to one half. This certainly works very well with my two which are
Graham Thomas and Golden Celebration both of which are very fragrant
and have lots of repeat fl owering.
Fireblight disease
I promised this month I would give you a few pointers on what to look
for with this disease. This year it reared its ugly head again in my front
garden after a gap of about fi ve years. Until a few years ago it used to be
a notifi able disease. It can destroy quite a lot of trees and shrubs in one
season. It is a bacterial disease, spread by wind, rain, insects and pollen.
It starts with the leaves turning brown at the end of the branches. They
then wither and die but remain clinging to the stem. Remove the infected
area and then further prune by cutting the stems back a further 60cms (24
inches). Remember to clean your secateurs with a very strong disinfectant.
This year I had a very old Forsythia that succumbed and a few years back
we had a 100 year old hawthorn hedge which had to be removed for the
same reason. Members of the Rosacea family can be affected.
Christine the Musical
Amateur production - music and lyrics
by Tony Franchi, book by Tony Franchi
and Marion Wells.
The Headgate, 14 Chapel Street North,
Colchester, with further performances
on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. All
performances start at 7.30pm.
Think sleaze is a modern invention?
Not a bit. A new musical, set in the
swinging sixties, is a light hearted look
at what was, at the time, the biggest
scandal ever to be uncovered by the
British Press.
It draws its inspiration from true events
in the life of Christine Keeler, the
60’s girl whose exploits prompted the
resignation of a senior Tory Minister and
exposed sleaze and corruption at the
heart of the Establishment.
15 original songs which capture the
diversity of popular musical styles of
that time with titles such as “Wodka”,
“He Would Say That Wouldn’t He?” and
Why Do My Men Treat Me Mean?”.
Tickets £12 and £10 concessions,
or why not combine a pre-theatre
‘60s style’ meal at The Warehouse
Restaurant, Chapel Street North with
theatre ticket for £20?
“Trick or Treat?”
As we all know, on Halloween kids in costumes travel from house to
house in order to ask for treats such as sweets with the question “Trick
or treat?”. The ‘trick’ being an idle threat to perform mischief on the
homeowners or their property if no treat is given.
Are we grumpy to feel sad that things have changed somewhat over
the years? It’s obvious nowadays whether a house welcomes Trick or
Treaters and so the challenge it seems is simply to get as many treats
as possible, which results in hyperactivity just before bedtime, not to
mention tooth decay. Ya boo sucks!
We used to love not knowing how we’d be received
when ringing a door bell and we relished carrying
out little tricks (like hiding a gnome or some such
silly thing). Much more fun and nowhere near as
predictable!
Campaign for Real Ale
From Chris Harvey, Pub Liaison Offi cer, Maldon & Dengie CAMRA
The UK’s best selling beer and pub guide, the “Good Beer Guide 2013” has just been released, with the Campaign for
Real Ale raising a glass to the 40th anniversary of its fl agship publication. It costs £15.99 from all good booksellers.
CAMRA’s 143,000 members fully update and revise the Guide every
year, thereby guaranteeing to supply the reader with the most up
to date information on the best real ale pubs all over the UK (there
are 4,500 pubs listed this year). Our corner of Essex is very wellrepresented
in the Guide, so here’s a taster of what the “Good Beer
Guide” has to say about our pubs.
New Pubs on the Block
This year, we welcome the Chapel Inn in Coggeshall and the Royal
Oak in Hazeleigh into the Guide. The “Chapel Inn” is situated in the
town’s market square, and offers up to four real ales, including one
from the local Red Fox Brewery; it also prides itself on using mainly
local produce for its varied menu.
The “Royal Oak” (known by the locals as the “Hazeleigh Oak”) is a very
friendly country pub on the outskirts of Maldon; it serves at least fi ve
ales from handpump or gravity, and also has an interesting selection of
ciders and perries.
Award-winning pubs
The Maldon and Dengie CAMRA Pub of the Year for 2012 is the
renowned ale house, the Prince of Wales in Stow Maries (in the south
of the Dengie peninsula). There are three cosy drinking areas, all with
open fi res; it always features a good range of beers from across the
country and serves an excellent range of home-cooked food.
The Colchester and N E Essex CAMRA Pub of the Year is the
Thatchers Arms in Mount Bures (on the Essex/Suffolk border); it offers
exceptional views of the Stour Valley, serving beers from Essex and the
rest of Britain, and has a sumptuous menu which is primarily sourced
from local suppliers. The Layer Fox in Layer-de-la-Haye was runnerup
in the Rural Pub of the Year category. This single-bar pub with a
large child-friendly garden offers up to four beers, mainly from local
breweries; it also has a varied and interesting menu.
Regional Stalwarts
Quite a few pubs in our area which appear in this year’s “Good Beer
Guide” have appeared in many past editions and can be relied upon
to provide high quality beers. Many of them also offer excellent food.
Working our way north to south, the Olde Albion in Rowhedge is a
friendly riverside pub which has regular beer festivals. The Chequers
at Goldhanger is a charming 15th century village inn with an enviable
reputation for fi ne food and ales. Maldon boasts three pubs in the
Guide; the historic Blue Boar Hotel, the friendly and bustling Queen
Victoria, and the pleasant quayside pub, the Queen’s Head. The
Hurdlemakers Arms in Woodham Mortimer and the Bell at Purleigh
are locally renowned for their superb food and excellent beers. The
Norton in Cold Norton, the Station Arms in Southminster and the
Queen’s Head in Burnham-on-Crouch are all superb traditional
community locals worth seeking out for their fi ne range of beers and
warm welcomes.
I hope I’ve inspired some of you to venture out and visit a few of these
excellent pubs and sample their beers – Cheers!
Here are details of nearby events which are coming up where you can
sample beers from Essex and all over the UK. One worthy of note is
CAMRA’s fi rst ever beer festival in South Woodham Ferrers, which will
be held at the Champions Manor Hall on Hullbridge Road (CM3 5LJ)
from Thursday 1st to Saturday 3rd November; there will be 30 ales
and 5 ciders on offer. Food will also be available and there’ll be live
entertainment on Thursday and Saturday nights.
We printed a letter in last month’s
Maldon LIFE magazine, which
generated quite a bit of feedback.
In brief, one of our readers could
see the benefi t of LIFE magazine
offering readers a place to
advertise items they no longer
wanted as ‘free to a good home’.
We know
there are
recycling
companies
that can
make good
use of many things but
FOR
FREE
this was more suggested as a
community service - a way of
‘helping our neighbours’.
The letter we published referred
to unwanted school uniform items
that were ‘almost new’. Our
reader would have loved to have
given them to a local family rather
than a recycling bin. 4 such
families have since come forward.
In addition, we regularly receive
requests from readers who want
to sell items so, we are going to
trial such a section and see if
more readers would fi nd it useful.
You might be surprised at how
much that we throw away could
really help another person!
You can now advertise your item
‘FOR SALE’ or ‘FOR FREE’ and
for the fi rst 3
months there
FOR
SALE
is no charge
for this. After
the trial, if
it proves
successful there
will be a small charge for items
over a certain value.
WHAT TO DO IF YOU
HAVE SOMETHING
YOU DON’T WANT?
Email, pop in, post or enter details
via our website. We need the
item name, a brief description,
price if relevant and phone
number. We also need a full
name, address and postcode
for our records - this will not be
printed. Your item will not be
included if you fail to provide this.
Email: tibi@estuarylife.co.uk
Museums
Readers have often commented to us on how fortunate we are to have a number of successful museums in our area. Gone are the days
when municipal museums were dry as dust - today, they cater for almost every interest and highlight the rich and diverse culture of our
county. The organisation ‘Museums in Essex’ produces a comprehensive illustrated guide (Real Essex) to what is on show and where. Here
are some of the Museums within easy reach - we advise checking opening times before planning a visit, as some museums are seasonal.
Tiptree Museum
The Tiptree Visitor Centre Tiptree,
Colchester, Essex, CO5 0RF.
01621 814524.
Over 50 years ago, John Wilkin
began collecting the paraphernalia
of preserve making and Essex
village life. In quiet corners of
the preserve factory he carefully
stored away pictures, documents
and redundant machines. The
museum he set up is jam packed
with artefacts! Looking at the
developing technology will give you
an idea of how preserve making
has advanced over the years.
You’ll also get a glimpse of what it
was like to live in Tiptree and the
surrounding countryside.
Bringing you up to date, a short
DVD presentation shows the
production processes for quality
preserve making and the history
of Wilkin & Sons. The museum is
located within The Tiptree visitor
centre, where you can also enjoy
lunch or a cream tea in the tea
room or browse the jam shop.
Opening hours:
Summer: Monday - Saturday 10am
- 5pm Sunday 11am - 5pm
Winter: Monday - Saturday 10am -
4pm Sunday 11am - 4pm.
Entry to the museum is free.
A state registered charity that
houses a comprehensive collection
of British military artefacts. From
weapons, uniforms and equipment.
Coggeshall Museum
The Village Hall, Stoneham Street,
Coggeshall, CO6 1UH. www.
coggeshallmuseum.org.uk
Curator: 01376 563003 (not on site).
Open April to end October every
Sunday 2:15pm - 4:45pm. Other
to the museum is requested for
such openings.
The Museum opened in 1990 in
an annex to St. Peter’s Hall (now
the Village Hall) in Stoneham
Street. The hall itself was formerly
one of Coggeshall’s breweries
but since the 1920s has been a
focus for many of Coggeshall’s
community activities. The museum
was established with the aim to
preserve Coggeshall’s historic past
and to carry on recording today’s
events for generations to come.
It was set up by enthusiastic
band of volunteers who do all
the maintenance and the setting
of the exhibits which include
prehistoric and Roman artefacts,
Coggeshall abbey items, a fi ne
display of Coggeshall lace and
a wool weaving loom as well as
items from Coggeshall’s industrial,
agricultural and social past. There
are displays of photographs of
‘old Coggeshall’ as well as video
and PowerPoint shows which run
during opening hours.
The memorabilia on show has
been loaned or donated by
local people and some of the
exhibits change from year to
year, different themes taking
precedence, so there is always
something new to see.
The museum is run entirely by
volunteers A free town walk leafl et
is available in the museum as
well as a variety of other leafl ets
about the visitor attractions in the
surrounding area.
A book commemorating the men
of Coggeshall who gave their lives
in the two World Wars has been
compiled by volunteers at the
museum. The book is on display in
the museum.
Brightlingsea Museum
the town, in particular their unique
connection with the Confederation
of Cinque Ports, shipbuilding,
Maldon Museum
‘The Museum in the Park’
47 Mill Road, Maldon. 01621
842688.
Housed in an Edwardian building,
formerly the Park Keeper’s Lodge
and is situated in Promenade Park
next to the main gates.
The displays relate to specifi c
periods – for example, one room
is dedicated to the 1940’s with
artefacts that portray life during the
Second World War, another is a
Victorian kitchen containing articles
which were used at that time.
A Victorian parlour displays a
baby’s pram, Victorian clothing
and a collection of skates, some
of which may well have been worn
when the park lake or local rivers
were frozen.
Upstairs the children’s room has
a model of a teacher wielding a
cane. Younger visitors and school
parties are very surprised to know
that his cane was actually used for
punishment.
On the top landing there is a room
dedicated to John Sadd. This
room holds a great deal of interest
for visitors, as many of them
or their families worked for this
large industrial company. There
are many silver cups which were
awarded for various activities
among the employees.
Also on this landing is a replica of
Edward Bright’s waistcoat. He was
known as the “Fat Man of Maldon”.
At his death at the age of 29 years
he weighed 42 stone.
The fame of the waistcoat is
related to a wager that “700 men”
could not fi t into the coat. If
you wish to fi nd out more about
Edward Bright please visit the
museum!
The fi nal room displays items
relating to Bentalls, another local
manufacturer. Maldon Lake is also
featured, as many local residents
learned to swim there and it was a
popular day out for Victorian and
Edwardian families.
The museum is open from April to
October, on Wednesdays, Fridays
and Saturday afternoons 2pm -
5pm. Sundays and Bank Holiday
Mondays open 11am - 5pm.
Entrance is £2 per adult and 50p
for children aged 5 to 15 years.
Heat oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4. Butter and
line a 30 x 20cm baking tin. Mix flour, sugar, spice,
bicarb of soda, sultanas and salt in a large bowl.
Beat eggs into melted butter, stir in the orange
zest and juice and mix with the dry ingredients.
Stir in pumpkin. Pour into the tin and bake for 30
mins or until golden and springy to touch.
To make the frosting, beat together the cheese,
butter, icing sugar, orange zest and 1 tsp of the
juice until creamy then leave in the fridge. When
cake is done, cool for 5 mins then turn onto a
cooling rack. Prick all over with a skewer and
drizzle with the rest of the orange juice while still
warm. Cool completely.
If you wish, trim the edges of the cake. Give the
frosting a quick beat to loosen and spread it over
the cake. If you’re making the cake ahead, keep
it in the fridge then take out what you need 30
mins before serving. Keeps covered for up to 3
days in the fridge.
Pumpkins vary in water content, so keep an eye on
the cake towards the end of cooking - yours may take
less or more time to cook through. Use a skewer to
test. Butternut squash works
brilliantly, in this recipe too!
Expect Fireworks!
By Marc Rudd - Pawz Outdoors Tel: 01621 840463
Here are some tips to help keep your pet happier and safe:
• If you’re aware your dog is fearful of fi reworks, consult your vet
who may reccommend a behaviourist to help with the problem
- depending on the severity of suffering. This wont be resolved
quickly but will give you something to work for for the following year.
• Take your dog on a long walk during daytime to ensure they’re tired,
as they will be less likely to react to the festivities.
• Canine ear plugs can be used to dull the noise and, used in
conjunction with a TV or radio with the sound up, can help further.
• Ensure windows are closed and curtains drawn. Try to engage your
dog with a food puzzle or game. Don’t force it if they are unwilling.
• Don’t ‘fuss’ over your dog when reacting to the noise, as this can
have the opposite effect of what you are trying to achieve. Stay
calm and ignore until they produce a behaviour you can reward.
• Never punish or get frustrated when your pet is in a fearful state - it
is a natural behaviour that can be overcome with time and patience.
• Make sure your pet’s ID is secure, just in case they do escape!
• Make sure they have a safe place to go - to hide if they so wish.
Tiptree
Priory Heath WI
Members of Tiptree Priory Heath WI will discover at their October meeting
whether the role of a woman in the Police Force at the end of the 20th
century was to be a ‘Paragon or a Prude’. This is the title chosen by Dr.
Maureen Scollan for her talk about her career with the Essex Police.
The meeting takes place on October 9th at 7.30pm in St. Luke’s Extension.
The September meeting proved to be a very interesting insight into the
work of St. John Ambulance, when we were joined by Paula Franklin, the
Lead Trainer Chris, and two volunteers from the Witham branch. They
showed a video illustrating the many activities their members get involved
with, and how important they are in assisting the Ambulance Service on a
day to day basis.
Chris brought a sheet of “What would I do if...?” questions which led to a
thoughtful debate, and in some cases a rethinking of what to do if faced
with an emergency. We were glad that we could watch the volunteers have
‘ treatment’ and not have to undergo this ourselves.
A London theatre trip is planned for November to see ‘A Chorus of
Disapproval’ by Alan Ayckbourn. More mundanely, we were asked to take
forms to fi ll in, in advance of ‘Flu jab day’ on October 13th, which will speed
up the process when brought along on that day.
Although it is only the beginning of October, our thoughts must turn to the
dreaded C word as the Christmas lunch needs to be booked. This year it is
planned to visit The Anchor in Feering on Friday December 7th.
Finally it was reported that WI is to feature in the new edition of The
Guinness Book of Records as 3,083 people took part in a simultaneous knit
for 15 minutes at the AGM in June. This is another example of the WI being
aware of current trends, knitting having a huge revival at the present time.
A Decade of Mind,
body and soul by Kristy Barber
A local Natural Therapy practitioner is celebrating her business’s 10th
birthday this year.
Jackie Barber, from Heybridge, is marking the 10th anniversary this October
of her natural therapy business. ‘PureBalance’ started off as ‘JackieAnn’-
Weight Management and Nutrition clinic. Realising that if someone had
emotional problems or stresses in their life, no matter how good the
nutritional advice, clients found it diffi cult to get results. This led Jackie to
further studies in fl ower essence therapy, hands-on healing and spirituality.
She has developed her own brand of fl ower essences which work by
stimulating the body’s own capacity for healing emotional and mental
issues and offers spiritual/natural healing. Her new ‘Soul Circle’, personal
development classes have sold out within days of announcement.
After doing training with The Healing Foundation, Jackie was asked to
become a Natural Healing trainer for the Essex area. She begins a new term
of training in October with a full class of students.
She said: ”It is amazing to watch students channel healing for the fi rst time.
It is a subject I am really passionate about and I aim to bring healing to the
general public in a way that is not weird or wacky!”
One healing student commented: “Uplifting, enjoyable days. Jackie has a
way of teaching that’s interesting & spiritually rewarding.”
Although PureBalance have many clients in the local area, they also have
clients travel from as far away as Dunmow, Frinton and East London and
Jackie often works ‘at a distance’ for those who need their homes space
cleared and energised.
Jackie hopes to continue her success for years to come providing Essex
with affordable and effective treatments and training. For more information
Unrivalled craftmanship and technology - from Architectural renovation, exteriors
and interiors to bespoke granite kitchen worktops, stone fireplaces, marble
bathrooms and memorials, including a wide range of headstone designs.
We are open to public and trade customers - call or visit to discuss your needs. We offer a range of stone care
products and products for cleaning marble and granite worktops are available from our workshop or by post.
Kitchens & Bathrooms
Our marble is 545 million years old,
exquisitely veined and carefully selected
from quarries in the Italian Etruscan
Apennines. Our granite is even older - the
finest being over 2900 million years old and
from the exotic regions of India, Brazil and
South Africa. The inherent beauty, colour
and iridescence is created by the distribution
of quartz and felspar within the stone.
Our love and understanding
of these materials assures
you of nothing but the best
Knowledge and experience can never be underestimated.
Special attention to every detail is what sets us apart at every
step, from design to installation.
THE CONSERVATORY
A well designed conservatory using
the latest generation glass technology
together with specialist floor and wall
insulation truly can be
‘A ROOM FOR ALL SEASONS’
With a little bit of imagination, we can
help you create a really stunning but
practical room, which you can use in
comfort all year round.
Create your very own bespoke space
by choosing from our range of colour
options (Chartwell Green, Grey, Black,
Irish Oak and many more).
Once you have chosen your conservatory
design, we can help you personalise it
with options such as flooring, lighting,
ventilation options and cooling systems.
THE ORANGERY
An elegant and practical room, providing
an entirely new lifestyle experience. An
orangery can blur the boundaries between
your home and garden.
The overhanging internal roof perimeter
offers an ideal opportunity to create soft,
ambient down lights – creating a tranquil
living space in the evenings whilst the
central glazed roof allows natural light to
flood the room in daytime.
An orangery by First Choice is designed
and constructed using the very latest
techniques and materials. The result is an
architecturally stunning building which is
comfortable, practical and energy efficient.
It really will become your favourite
Install your conservatory
before the government taxes it!
“This green tax on conservatories is just the start of a red-tape nightmare for homeowners”
Thinking of building a new conservatory, replacing an old boiler or putting in new windows?
It may be best to do it before the government taxes your home improvements!
Delaying any proposed home improvements for just a couple of years could mean falling foul of a deluge of new
‘green’ red tape that could mean having to pay thousands of pounds extra.
Under plans being discussed by the Government, anyone hoping to make improvements to their home from 2014 may
have to carry out a whole raft of additional works to show their property is ‘energy effi cient’.
Green Tax
Millions of householders
wanting to build a
conservatory will be
forced to spend
hundreds of pounds
making their homes
more environmentally
friendly
Extortionate
Those who want to proceed with planned improvements, despite
this extortionate additional ‘green tax’, will have to forget the
notion that “their home is their castle”
They will need to have their property checked out by special
inspectors to make sure they have double-glazing and enough
loft and wall insulation.
Only when the offi cials are satisfi ed that they meet these
requirements will the homeowners be allowed to make the
improvements they want.
All this is part of a £14 billion Green Deal to insulate all homes
in Britain within 20 years — a policy pushed through last year
by Chris Huhne, the late but unlamented minister for Energy
and Climate Change, before he was forced to resign.
First Choice Windows and Conservatories, with branches in Colchester and Tiptree, will be pleased to give you more advice
on windows, doors and conservatories and how your future home improvement plans will be affected by ‘The Green Deal’.
Tiptree Garden Club
& Horticultural Society Autumn Show
Once again the report of our show
starts in ‘spite of the weather’. It
was a very dry winter with hose
pipe bans in the spring and then
the rain came and the bans were
lifted. This was followed by damp
cold weather resulting in strange
and worrying growing conditions,
these are the challenges facing
gardeners in East Anglia.
Entries were up on last year .There
were some beautiful dahlias (one
child enquired were they real?), the
onions and leeks were magnificent
and the tomatoes added to the colour.
Trophies were awarded as follows:
The Hull Memorial Cup for most
points in the vegetable classes was
won by Joe Cook with 33 points.
The Enos Rose Bowl for most
points in the General Flowers
classes was awarded to Norman
Crowder with 21 points.
The Jackson Ball Cup for most
points in the Chrysanthemum
classes went to Deborah Farthing
3 points.
We were short of chrysanthemums
this year, probably due to weather.
The Willis Cup awarded for most
points in the Dahlia classes was
also won by Deborah Farthing.
The Shanklin Rose Bowl awarded
for most points in the Floral Art was
won by Diane McCord with 9 points.
The Belle Vue Cup for most points
in the Cookery classes was won by
Margaret Williams with 9 points.
We were very short of cookery
exhibitors this show.
The Alfred Colby Memorial Cup
for most points in the Handicraft
classes was also won by Margaret
Williams with 13 points.
The Tom Olley Challenge Cup for
most points in the Fruit classes went
to Dave Mansfi eld with 6 points.
The B. Logan Challenge Cup for
the most points in the under 12’s
Children’s classes was won by Amy
London.
The Craftsman Glass Challenge
Cup for the 12 to 16’s went to Jodie
Gosling.
The Tiptree and District Horticultural
Society Cup for most points in
Conventional Photography was
awarded to Chris Osborne.
The Courtyard Kitchens Cup for
most points Digital Photography was
won jointly by Deborah Gosling and
Lesley Pomphrett with 7 points each.
The John Kent Memorial Salver for
the second most points in Digital
Photography was won jointly by
Anne Cathcart and Una Ringer with
6 points each.
The Rod Brunning Memorial Salver
for the best digital photograph was
won by C. Parker-Larkin.
W. A. Martin Medal awarded for the
second highest number of points
in the show was awarded to Roger
Cook with 38 points.
The R.H.S. Banksian Medal
awarded for the highest amount
of prize money in the Horticultural
Classes went to Deborah Farthing.
The Grand Challenge Bowl
awarded at the Autumn Show for
the most points in the General
Flower classes in both shows was
won by Leigh Arnold with 45 points.
The Hutchinson Cup awarded to the
Exhibitor gaining the most points in
the show was awarded to Deborah
Farthing with 50 points.
The Wilsdon Memorial Cup
awarded for the Best Kept Garden
was not awarded this year as there
were no entries.
The Vegetable Collection kindly
sponsored by Wilkin & Sons - 1st
Anthony Walters and 2nd Roger Cook.
The Salad Collection kindly
sponsored by Perrywood Nursery
& Garden Centre - 1st Anthony
Walters and 2nd Dave Mansfi eld.
(Next let’s have some more
exhibitors to challenge them!)
Judges were John Coope for the
fruit, vegetables and fl owers; Peggy
Hayter for the fl oral art; Sue Game
for handicrafts and the children’s
exhibits and Liz Oddy for cookery.
The committee thank all those
who exhibited, making it a great
success. Also many thanks to all
the others involved.
Next year’s Spring Show is on 23rd
March and 2013 schedules will
be available at www.tiptreegarden
club.com at the beginning of the
new year. The shows are open to
members, non members, residents
of Tiptree and non residents, so we
look forward to seeing you then!
