Chief executive Matters to be discussed with Colchester BC’s chief executive, at a meeting arranged with the council chairman and vice chairman, were suggested by councillors. It was noted that the wish of the local council is to initiate positive lines of communication with Colchester BC and settle long standing projects so that the parish council can go ahead with future plans. War memorial Councillors agreed to the alteration of Tiptree’s War Memorial to accommodate the names of fi ve Tolleshunt Knights residents who died in the Second World War. Ramblers’ Association A request for a grant was received from the national Ramblers’ Association. Councillors noted that the council’s policy is to award grants only to local organisations but that, in view of the council’s aim to arrange circular footpath walks in and around Tiptree with, perhaps, the help of the Ramblers’ Association, they will make a donation to its local branch Operation Christmas Child Each year the people of Tiptree provide Christmas gifts for children around the world who live in the poorest of conditions. Registered Osteopaths The Courtyard Clinic was established in 2000 and over the past 12 years has successfully treated thousands of patients with a range of conditions. If you wish to discuss an injury or treatment, please contact us. As a change from our usual editorial, we thought some background to the history of Osteopathy would be useful and informative. We are often asked by our patients “What did people used to do before Osteopaths?”. In fact, forms of manipulative treatment have been practiced in various ways for thousands of years! In the early days these practitioners were called bone setters. They would deal with anything from fractures to deformities and painful joints. Hippocrates who is considered ‘the father of medicine’ was a Greek Physician around 460 - 375 BC. He left many volumes of work on the observation and treatment of disease including at least three works on the bones and joints entitled: On Fractures; On the Articulations; and On Setting Joints by Leverage. Hippocrates is believed to have said “look well to the spine for the cause of disease”. He noticed that symptoms spread over the area supplied by spinal nerves originating at diseased vertebrae, as well as certain paralytic symptoms caused by severe injuries to the spinal column. For example, in the treatment of spinal curvatures, he recommended that the patient be placed face-down upon a bench with straps placed under the arm pits and across the chest, and around the knees and ankles, so that traction could be applied from both ends of the bench while the correction was being made. (You will be pleased to know that at The Courtyard Clinic we have recently stopped using this practice !!!). Cato the Elder, a Roman statesman (234-149 BC) practiced bone setting during the time of the Roman republic. Quackery (unqualifi ed practitioners) ran rampant in the 18th century as doctors were not always available particularly in country areas. Manipulation, bone setting and many other approaches to health were being practised. However, qualifi ed practitioners were busy making contributions. Sir James Paget, a famous surgeon and authority on bone diseases in the 19th century, was one of the qualifi ed practitioners who observed that there was actually some value in many of the manipulations performed by the bonesetter; in a lecture entitled “Cases That Bonesetters Cure,” published in the British Medical Journal, January 1867, he stated: “Few of you are likely to practice without having a bone-setter for a rival; and if he can cure a case which you have failed to cure, his fortune may be made and yours marred.... Learn, then, to imitate what is good and avoid what is bad in the practice of bone-setters.” Andrew Taylor Still proposed Osteopathy as a form of healthcare in 22nd June 1874 when he broke with orthodox medicine and ‘fl ung the banner of osteopathy to the breeze’. Still was born in 1828 in Lee County in Virginia. As a teenager he was a hunter, skinning the animals he shot and selling the hides. He also developed an early interest in anatomy. His father was a minister and doctor and Still would follow his father observing him on his rounds. Through vigorous self-study and observation, he developed his skills as a physician. With the addition of some formal training he was eventually awarded an M.D degree by the state of Missouri. During the Civil War he was a captain in the Union Army, later rising to the rank of major. He used his skills to help the wounded, whilst at the same time furthering his knowledge and understanding of health and the human body. Andrew Taylor Still He worked primarily through the musculo-skeletal system and developed philosophies of treatment based on the body’s natural immunity. This resulted in the creation of Osteopathy and Still severing links with Allopathy in 22nd June 1874. It wasn’t until 1889 he fi nally coined the term ‘Osteopathy’, having initially gone by terms such as ‘magnetic healer’ and ‘lightening bone setter’. The term derives from two Greek words: ‘osteon’ meaning bone, and ‘pathos’ meaning suffering. Commonly today this is wrongly interpreted, translating to bone-disease. The intended meaning of ‘pathos’ was supposed to be seen as; ‘sensitive to’ or ‘responding to’, indicating the importance of the consideration of the body’s skeletal structure. As his fame grew, many requests came to Still to teach his new method of healing. The American School of Osteopathy (ASO) was founded in 1892 in Kirksville, Missouri. Today Osteopathy is a highly regulated and highly regarded form of healthcare with some plus 2,000 osteopaths practising in the UK alone. The majority are in private practise but there is increasing integration with the NHS both with directly employed practitioners and with regional contracts.
