Medic<strong>at</strong>ion Literacy<br />
Helping pharmacists and promotoras educ<strong>at</strong>e p<strong>at</strong>ients<br />
Poor health outcomes <strong>of</strong>ten can be traced to<br />
p<strong>at</strong>ients who don’t understand the correct way to<br />
use medic<strong>at</strong>ions.<br />
The <strong>UTEP</strong>-UT Austin Cooper<strong>at</strong>ive Pharmacy<br />
Program, under the direction <strong>of</strong> Clinical Associ<strong>at</strong>e<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essor José O. Rivera, Pharm.D., is tackling this<br />
problem with a medic<strong>at</strong>ion literacy study supported<br />
by a $180,000 grant from the <strong>Paso</strong> del Norte<br />
Health Found<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />
Pharmacy <strong>research</strong>ers are conducting<br />
medic<strong>at</strong>ion-literacy assessments in the community<br />
and also are developing educ<strong>at</strong>ional m<strong>at</strong>erials for<br />
use by promotoras (community health educ<strong>at</strong>ors)<br />
and pharmacists.<br />
The Cooper<strong>at</strong>ive Pharmacy Program also is<br />
responsible for the Herbal Safety Web site <strong>at</strong><br />
www.herbalsafety.utep.edu. The popular site is an<br />
outstanding resource for medical pr<strong>of</strong>essionals and<br />
the general public who want to learn more about<br />
the drug interactions <strong>of</strong> medicinal herbs. Fact<br />
sheets on herbs are available for download in both<br />
English and Spanish.<br />
