Aqu<strong>at</strong>ic Ecology<br />

Managing a precious resource<br />

Ponds, wetlands and other w<strong>at</strong>er sources<br />

in extreme environments such as the desert<br />

or Arctic are one <strong>of</strong> the focuses <strong>of</strong> the Aqu<strong>at</strong>ic<br />

Ecology Labor<strong>at</strong>ory <strong>at</strong> <strong>UTEP</strong>. Lab director Vanessa<br />

Lougheed, Ph.D., an assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

<strong>of</strong> biology, leads a <strong>research</strong> group studying the<br />

plants and invertebr<strong>at</strong>e cre<strong>at</strong>ures th<strong>at</strong> live in<br />

these isol<strong>at</strong>ed sources <strong>of</strong> w<strong>at</strong>er.<br />

The lab also is studying damage and restor<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

efforts along the Rio Grande and in the<br />

springs and wetland areas around Fort Bliss.<br />

Another project seeks to understand and<br />

manage the ecological disruptions caused by<br />

invasive species <strong>of</strong> plants, including salt cedar<br />

and tumbleweeds.<br />

on the development <strong>of</strong> functional<br />

indic<strong>at</strong>ors to track restor<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

efforts <strong>at</strong> the Rio Bosque Wetlands<br />
