ALUMINIUM-Newsletter on the Internet: www.aluminium-messe.com
Record amounts of exhibitors, visitors and
stand space at ALUMINIUM 2008
Passing over the ALUMINIUM baton
Dear Readers
This year's ALUMINIUM was the largest ever - in all respects. Attracting 27% more
exhibitors, just under ten percent more visitors and taking up over 15% more stand
space, the event enjoyed double-figure growth for the seventh time in succession.
A total of 869 exhibitors from 46 countries made their way to Essen this year for
the largest international trade fair for the aluminium industry.
At 16,730, there was a record numbers of trade visitors, too. 40 percent of visitors
came from abroad – which shows the extent to which the fair has become an integral
part of the global aluminium world. This was due to a large extent to our partners,
the GDA (German Aluminium Industry Association), the European Aluminium
Association (EAA) and also our exhibitors and media and congress partners.
Despite all the economic challenges currently facing the global aluminium industry,
the ALUMINIUM exhibitors rated the industry's prospects positively. The representative
business confidence survey commissioned for the fair shows that 51 percent
of the companies are expecting to see ongoing growth in business for the entire
industry in the future. The ALUMINIUM itself is also looking forward with a degree
of optimism to the next event in 2010: around 90% of the total space of the
ALUMINIUM 2008 has already been reserved.
Finally, a few words on a more personal note. This year's ALUMINIUM was the last
for me personally. After twelve years I am leaving the ALUMINIUM to take up the
position of spokesperson of the management board of Karlsruher Messe- und
Kongress GmbH. It has been a source of great satisfaction to me to have overseen
the birth of the ALUMINIUM, to have supervised its growth into one of the major
industrial trade fairs in Germany and to have seen the “ALU-
MINIUM” brand become established all over the world.
I would like to thank you for your trust and for the many
years I have enjoyed working together with you. You can
rest assured, however, that both you and the ALUMINIUM
will continue to be in good hands.
Best regards
Britta Wirtz
This year's ALUMINIUM Congress was once again organised by the DGM
(German Material Science Association). Throughout the week the DGM also
staged the 11th round of the prestigious “International Conference on
Aluminium Alloys” in Aachen. A bus service permitted visitors to shuttle between
the two venues. The DGM combined the two events with the ALUMINIUM trade
fair to create the highly successful "Aluminium Week 2008".
The ICAA 11 was the largest event in its 20+ year history, attracting 575
participants from 44 countries and providing a platform for over 400 technical
and scientific talks. It is held in countries which produce and process aluminium
and was held for the first time this year in Germany. Over 150 of the ICAA
participants had registered specially to attend both the ALUMINIUM Congress
and the trade fair. Their numbers were boosted by various other groups of trade
fair visitors.
The programme of talks at this year's one-day congress consisted exclusively of
invited overviews and talks which adhered to the invitation guidelines. There
were no poster sessions. Separately bookable cycles were offered for the morning
2
www.aluminium-messe.com
ALUMINIUM Congress focused on industry-related topics
Just how much innovative force the industry has to offer was once again
demonstrated by the “Industrial Design & Engineering” EUROPEAN ALUMINIUM
AWARDS 2008 which were presented at the ALUMINIUM for the 6th time. 48
companies took part in this year's competition, each keen to present an innovative
and afternoon. The morning
was devoted to
topics related to aviation
and surface technology
whereas automotive
industry applications
and process-oriented
topics were the main
focus in the afternoon.
The overview presentations
effectively combined
industrial development
standards with new
technical approaches.
They were supplemented by strategic overviews of “Global and Technical
Development” issues presented by high-calibre representatives of the European
aluminium industry.
Winners of the
EUROPEAN ALUMINIUM AWARD 2008
show their innovative force
Vasco Belgium received the award in the “Consumer
Products” category for the unusual design of its
“Bryce Radiator”. The aluminium jacket permits efficient
heat radiation while creating an aesthetically pleasing
appearance. Depending on how the light falls on it, it
generates alluring reflections in a spectrum of different
colours.
A further winner of the Innovation Award in the
“Consumer Products” category was Alurunner
Germany. The prize-winning "Alurunner Sleigh" is the
first toboggan in the world to feature genuine springing
in the form of an adjustable shock absorber which
ensures safe and stable tobogganing.
The winner in the Automotive & Transport “Industrial
Products” category was the “Aircraft Recovery System”
made by Resqtec Zumro Holland. This represented a
perfect combination of elegance and functionality in
a lifting system.
In the “Industrial Products” Building & Construction
category, the aluminium stairway for the “Paliriccione”
building produced by Bayrds Italy impressed the jury
most. “Paliriccione” is a successful example of how to
introduce elegance into an industrial use for aluminium.
The stairs lend the building a striking appearance.
product featuring the material aluminium. Of these entries 30 were then
nominated for the Awards themselves. The jury was unanimous in its decisions
for the five individual awards, the Special Award and the Jury Prize.
Further information at www.aluminium-award.eu/2008.
Alimex Germany received the “Mechanical Engineering
& Electronics” award in the “Industrial Products”
category for its “ACP5080 MF Solar Panel”. The highly
reflective aluminium plates can be used for solar
applications. They are manufactured using a low-cost
milling technique.
Balco India were the proud winners of this year's
Special Prize for production technology in the
“Mechanical Engineering & Electronics” category.
Their "Aluminium Fuse" appealed to the jury, as the
use of aluminium in a fuse is highly efficient for the
primary smelting process.
The Jury Prize in the 2008 European Aluminium
Awards went to Lotus Engineering UK for its “Evora
Aluminium Sports Car Structure”. Lotus offers a unique
approach to car bodies. Adhesive techniques are combined
with mechanical joints, giving rise to innovative and
creative solutions. The jury's decision was based
above all on the environmental and sustainability
effects of lightweight constructions and products.
ALUMINIUM 2008 – Exhibitor Statements
SMS Demag – Ralf Ohrndorf, Key Account Management Aluminium
“Once again the fair more than fulfilled everyone's expectations. Our main
focus was on meetings with customers – most of whom were European visitors.
The whole event was a great success for us.”
HYDRO Deutschland – Oliver Bell, Managing Director
“The ALUMINIUM has become the number one event in the calendar for our
industry. This time our main priority was getting across our key message to
politicians and to our customers - that aluminium is a major force for
climate protection. We're really pleased with the response – from a business
viewpoint, too.”
Alcoa Europe –
Jasper von Zon, Manager, Communications Manager Northern Europe
“Alcoa’s focus at Aluminium 2008 was to showcase solutions that ´Support a
Sustainable Future´. Looking back at the show, we can conclude that ´Essen´
indeed offered us the platform to make our case. All of our business units had
numerous, quality contacts. As a result, the ´Aluminium´ trade show concept
earned a sustainable position in Alcoa’s overall marketing communications mix.”
Sapa AG – Roberto Mocchi, Marketing Director Europe
“ALUMINIUM 2008 was the best trade fair I've ever experienced in Europe.
The breakdown of visitors was remarkably international this time. We met
large numbers from France, the Benelux countries and Switzerland. We'll be
coming back for ALUMINIUM 2010.”
ALUMINIUM DUBAI 2009 –
Key business link with the
Middle East
After its successful launch during ALUMINIUM CHINA 2008, the participation
in ALUMINIUM DUBAI is increasing rapidly due to one obvious fact: the
exhibition is perceived as the prime channel to discover and develop key
business links in the Middle East aluminium market. The region will become
the world’s future hub in the industry in less than a decade, a fact that
made major industry players think seriously of establishing a link and invest
in downstream and upstream industrial projects in the Middle East especially
in the GCC. ALUMINIUM DUBAIs importance is intertwined with the importance
of this moment in the Middle East where the demands for aluminium is
escalating to cover needs for quality products and efficient production
technologies. New smelters are being built and the projected output is
expected to reach 4 million tonnes by 2010, which means the door is wide
open for all those companies who are specialized in producing upstream and
downstream technologies to showcase their innovations and sell their products
to high end local and regional buyers. Besides being construction and real
estate driven, the market is developing to other dimensions, and the lucrative
aluminium production will lead to a mature industrial development in the region
where aluminium constitutes a major part of it.
ALUMINIUM DUBAI 2009, taking place from 29 to 31 March, is marked by the
participation of major industry leaders such as EMAL, DUBAL, SMS Metallurgy,
FATAHUNTER. Besides the participation of major players, ALUMINIUM DUBAI
will provide visitors from different countries in the Middle East an opportunity
to have hands on the latest technologies and developments, and establish
reliable business links with top market leaders and industry professionals.
Just right before the exhibition MEED will hold a high-quality conference.
The whole aluminium industry is invited to participate at the international
aluminium week in Dubai.
