coastal news BIG CHOP, LITTLE CHOP The Mountain Equipment Co-op’s BIG CHOP Summer Paddle Series in Vancouver, BC offers the “Big Chop” 8 – 10 km race course and a 4 – 5 km “Little Chop” course every second Thursday all summer long from Vanier Park. This 10 race series offers a challenge to the experienced racer while providing an encouraging environment for new racers. Before each race there is an instructional session. To purchase, visit www.georgiastrait.org or call 250-753-3459. MEC PADDLE EXPO MEC is holding its first annual Paddle EXPO in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia on Saturday, July 28, 2007. Paddle EXPO is a celebration of paddling that aims to expose as many people as possible to the enjoyment and safety of paddle sports. From novice to expert, all paddlers are welcome. Free on-land and onwater training, workshops, slide shows, paddling-related vendors. The EXPO is a free event (though pre-registration by presenters is required). The Symposium is located at beautiful Fort Worden State Park Conference Center in Port Townsend, Washington. The themes this year are women in paddling and families. There are on-land and on-water workshops offered Friday, Saturday and Sunday to help you hone your paddling strokes, pack your boat, practice rescue techniques and many other helpful tips. The industry leading manufacturers, retailers and outfitters will also have booths set up for you to check out the latest gear. There is over 1400 ft of waterfront packed with kayaks and accessories, an extensive retail area where you can pick up some new equipment and events for the whole family all day and into the evening.
