Some like to think we’re in the middle of
nowhere. We like to think we’re at the centre of
all that’s good.
The Shuswap is home to great lakes, warm water, sandy beaches,
incredible houseboating, golf, skiing, music festivals, farmers’
markets, wineries and endless trails. Seven uniquely enchanting
All of our Visitor Centres are available to provide you with
tourist information, assistance and advice. They can offer travel
information and literature, make accommodation reservations,
provide community information and provincial itinerary planning -
and their service is friendly and personalized.
There are 7 Visitor Centres in the Shuswap:
The Shuswap has a
storied history…
Shuswap Lake is named after
the Shuswap First Nations —
the Secwepemc — an important
Salish nation whose ancestors
have always lived in the
BC interior.
Once numbering over 5,000,
the Secwepemc lived along
Little Shuswap Lake and Big
Shuswap Lake, fishing salmon,
hunting and gathering. The
Sockeye Salmon spawning
cycle occurring at the Adams
River was integral to First
Nations’ culture and lifestyle.
Today, four First Nations bands
live in the Shuswap: the Adams
Lake Band, Neskonlith Band,
Spallumcheen Band and Little
Shuswap Band.
Two centuries ago, traders
and explorers arrived and
in time, settlements sprang
up throughout the region.
When gold was discovered
on the Columbia River in
1864, Seymour Arm became a
supply centre for the Big Bend
gold rush. The Hudson’s Bay
Company built the first
steamer to ply the Shuswap
region’s water.
The completion of the Canadian
Pacific Railway – the Last
Spike joining the east and west
segments at Craigellachie –
changed life in the Shuswap.
Settlement and development
followed: farms and businesses
were established and brisk
trade evolved to serve the
needs of resource industries
like logging and mining.
The spirit of exploration and
discovery remains alive today
throughout the Shuswap.
Its vast areas of untrammeled
wilderness still beckon those
seeking British Columbia’s most
enchanting and captivating
landscapes and stories.
How would you describe the Shuswap?
You could say it’s a place where incredible nature comes to rest in the
soul. A singular place, where every season and every region beckons
to restless soles. A place to ascend towering cliffs, glide across
snowy meadows, listen to the whispers of a lush forest or step inside
an inviting café, let go of your hurry, stay awhile and smile.
You could say it’s a place for families, where you can jump into
incredibly warm water from the deck of a houseboat or wander along
rolling trails. A place where you can golf, then bike, then swim, then
dine on fine local fare and enjoy an evening out on the town.
You could say it’s a place where you can taste great wines and tour
vineyards, explore hidden natural treasures, witness the amazing
cycle of the salmon and watch the clear night sky wheel overhead.
A place to revel in culture and community and to create your own
stories of simplicity and abundance.
You could say all of this and even more.
Or you could simply say it’s a place where you
can change into your vacation shoes, put your
feet up and do blissfully nothing at all.
Plan your Shuswap visit or
vacation all at once, or take
time to explore each of the
area’s seven distinct regions:
Salmon Arm, Chase, Enderby,
Falkland, North Shuswap,
South Shuswap and Sicamous.
We’re known for our
spectacular summers but
wonders await the whole
year through. The Shuswap
is a destination of choice for
families, adventurers, golfers,
hikers and bikers, winter sports
enthusiasts, snowmobilers and
all types of water sports fans.
Put one foot in heaven and take
a step in our direction.
WINeries & Breweries
Wine and beer enthusiasts, welcome to paradise!
Award-winning wineries and unique breweries
welcome you to indulge in exceptional
tasting experiences.
Like so many Shuswap stories, our wines and beers express the
spectacular landscape that surrounds us. Our region is home to six award
winning wineries – Ovino Winery, Recline Ridge, Sunnybrae Vineyards &
Winery, Celista Estate Winery, Granite Creek Estate Winery, Larch Hills
Winery – and two outstanding breweries specializing in local, organic
beers – Crannóg Ales and the Barley Station Brew Pub.
Although the Shuswap is sometimes considered part of the Okanagan
wine-growing region, our climate is cooler than the southern interior
regions of BC and creates exceptional products. Shuswap summers are
warm and dry, with long, sunny days and cool nights creating distinctive,
flavourful grapes. And with so much snow over the winter, the climate
provides a generous amount of moisture year-round, keeping irrigation
needs to a minimum. Each vineyard enjoys its own unique microclimate,
producing singular flavours that can only be found right here.
With wineries of outstanding
quality established throughout
the Shuswap, a tasting tour is a
must for visitors seeking to delight
all five senses! The Shuswap’s
wineries are family-run businesses
that produce wines so fine that
they compete on par with Canadian
and International wines. They have
perfected a combination
of growing techniques
and plant selection that
enhances the aromas and
flavours of their wines.
The area’s wines
include magnificent
Gewürztraminers,
Merlots, Ortegas,
Reislings, Siegerrebes, just to
name a few, which have all won
national awards.
All six wineries have tasting
rooms to pour out adventures
for your palette. To find
out which ones are open
during your visit, go to www.
shuswapwineries.ca, or pick
up a copy of our Full Circle
Farm Tours brochure.
Although these wineries
have worked long and hard
to earn their accolades,
for visitors the
journey is easy.
Most wineries
24 | www.ShuswapTourism.ca
are located within a twenty-minute drive of
the Trans-Canada Highway, which winds its
way through Shuswap country, from Celista
Estate Winery on the north side of the lake, to
more central Granite Creek, Recline Ridge, and
Sunnybrae Vineyards & Winery, and on to Ovino
and Larch Hills Wineries toward the Okanagan.
The Shuswap region is also home to breweries
that pride themselves on using only the finest
local organic ingredients to produce their beers
and ales. Crannóg Ales in Sorrento, Canada’s
first certified organic farmhouse microbrewery,
brews unfiltered, unpasteurized ales using only
organic ingredients, some of which come right
from their own farm. At the Barley Station Brew
Pub in Salmon Arm, visitors delight in fine food
and exclusive limited-edition seasonal beers.
Whether you choose to savour the Shuswap’s
wineries and breweries in a day or a week, make
sure to plan your tour carefully to maximize your
enjoyment. Remember too, that some wineries
have a picnic area or patio so that you can bring a
snack or a meal to enjoy along with the fabulous
wine and stunning scenery.
Keep in mind that some of the Shuswap’s unique
wines are produced only in limited quantities and
may not be available elsewhere, so if you find
yourself swept away by a particular flavour, stock
up while you’re there. And to keep your tour
worry-free, appoint a designated driver for the
trip. You will be glad you did!
trails
The Shuswap is home to an extensive trail
network that offers something for everyone.
From simple strolls on community paths, to alpine hikes in
snow-dotted and flower-strewn meadows, to walks on the boardwalk,
to waterfalls and meandering forest excursions, you can satisfy all
your soles’ desires.
The Shuswap’s trails are often characterized as an Appalachian-style
network of cross-country hiking, biking, ski, snowshoe and equestrian
trail routes. The terrain varies widely, from mossy forest floors to alpine
meadows and wetlands.
Well-developed backcountry roads and boating routes provide access to
remote areas, hidden gems waiting for curious adventurers. This land is
home to numerous tree species, wildflowers and mushrooms, and you
can find yourself in the
company of animals
both large (moose!)
and small (mice!).
The Shuswap
Highland, the
Monashee Mountains and
their sub-ranges offer endless
opportunities for adventure and
are well known for hiking, biking
and horseback riding. In and
around Salmon Arm, you’ll find
an exceptional system of cycling
routes as well. Dismount to take
a close look at the marshland,
take to the countryside for a
quiet rural ride, or head to the
highlands to test your skills on
trails ranging from gentle to flatout
thrilling.
The Shuswap’s trail network
often takes visitors through
and alongside the traditional
territory of the Secwepemc First
Nations peoples. With all that
these lands have to offer and
as the home of the great spirit
for eternity,
we politely
request that
all sojourners,
hikers,
wanderers and
adventures
obey signage,
respect
sensitive
cultural locales
and help to ensure that the
landscape retains
its captivating
beauty for
generations
to come.
Our trail network
just keeps getting
better. Guided by a vision of
overnight facilities to link
existing accommodations
- B&B’s, campgrounds
and resorts with a series
of discrete backcountry
wilderness cabins – we have
created opportunities for a
point-to-point (or hut-to-hut),
outdoor travel experience
amongst our stunning natural
landscape. The Shuswap Trail
Alliance, an award-winning
initiative among regional
partners, is dedicated to
making the way through our
parks, our communities and
around the Shuswap as clean
parks
We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: the
Shuswap landscape is rich and varied, perfect
for adventurers and for folks just looking for a
relaxing time in a beautiful setting.
The region’s array of provincial, regional and community parks provides
a wide range of experiences.
The Shuswap boasts an abundance of provincial parks, day-use
areas and protected areas. Herald Provincial Park and Shuswap
Lake Provincial Park offer waterfront access and feature hundreds of
spacious, tree-covered campsites, sandy beaches, nature trails and
water activities for visitors of all ages. Roderick Haig-Brown Provincial
Park is a perfect place to visit in October to witness the run of the Adams
River sockeye salmon.
History buffs will enjoy Silver Beach Provincial Park, located at the north
Provincial Park is renowned for
its excellent fishing year-round.
Cinnemousun Narrows Provincial
Park, where the four arms of
Shuswap Lake meet, is perfect for
water recreation. There are many
other great parks in the region
too, visit www.Env.Gov.BC.ca/
BCParks/explore or
www.CSRD.bc.ca to find out more.
Regional and community parks
in the Shuswap also offer
picturesque landscapes that
make for a perfect picnic. John
Evdokimoff Park, a bike skills
park in the South Shuswap,
also serves as the trailhead
for the White Lake-Balmoral
connector trail. Other parks cater
to different activities and skill
levels, from gentle hikes great
for families to rigourous ascents.
Please treat our parks and
your fellow visitors with
respect and be mindful of
your impact on the land
during your visit.
The Shuswap’s shimmering lakes, rich wetlands
and lush forests don’t just appeal to people –
our fine feathered friends love to perch here too.
In fact, our widely varied habitat of rivers, lakes and wetlands
attracts over 300 bird species to the Shuswap – some 63 per cent
of all species found in BC. In the spring and fall the shorelines are
a haven for a wide variety of migratory birds. Large numbers of
waterfowl and many other birds grace the skies and waterways of the
region. Watch Osprey and Blue Herons fishing. Bring your binoculars
to look on as Bald Eagles feed their young.
Perhaps one of the most enchanting Shuswap experiences to be had
is witnessing the ‘walking on water’ dance of the Western Grebe. The
Western Grebe has established only two breeding colonies in BC, and
one of them is right here in Salmon Arm Bay. Take the family out for a
canoe trip to share in the magic
up close.
Birding is a wonderful
way to learn about
our natural
surroundings, too.
Numerous tree
species, wildflower
and mushroom
varieties flourish in the
Shuswap’s temperate zone,
while large and small animals
thrive in its lush habitats. At
the Salmon Arm Marine Park
by the wharf, visit the awardwinning
Interpretive Centre
operated by the Salmon Arm
Bay Nature Enhancement
Society, where you can find out
what makes our ecosystems
thrive. The society has worked
to protect the sensitive
habitat, creating islands,
lagoons, boardwalks, trails
and bird blinds.
Know where to look –
up in the trees or among
the reeds?
Bring a field guide
– colour photos or
illustrations will make
bird identification easier.
Bring binoculars – it’s not
always possible to get
up close.
Bring the family –
birdwatching is magical
for folks of all ages.
Try a guided walk – visit
the SABNES Interpretive
Centre for a great start.
Use your ears – birds
have distinctive, beautiful
voices. Listening will help
you identify birds, too!
Look carefully – birds
are uniquely and
beautifully detailed.
Take notes – in case you
want to learn more later!
Tread lightly – habitat
areas can be sensitive.
Enjoy but beware –
birdwatching can
become addictive!
Winter ACTIVITIES
You might know the Shuswap best
for our lovely lakes and sultry
summers but we’ve got mountain
magic year-round! Come join us for
a winter adventure you’ll never forget
and find out why it’s one of our top
four favourite seasons!
Where there’s four seasons, there’s snow. And where
there’s snow, there’s skiing. The Shuswap offers a
variety of alpine and Nordic skiing opportunities,
as well as snowboarding and backcountry touring,
making it a great central location for an incredible BC
ski vacation. We’ve got an
endless variety of terrain
– from gentle hills to
rugged slopes – and easy
driving access to countless
trailheads.
If snowmobiling is more your
style, all across the Shuswap
you’ll find great powder,
challenging climbs and fun
bowls to play in. Our hills are
just right for all types: from new
sledders, touring families, fun
riders and thrill-seekers.
After a
thrilling day on
the snow, rest up
in a cozy chalet,
or venture out
to a lake for skating
and ice fishing. Gather
the whole family for a fun
snowshoe hike or treat
yourselves to a sleigh ride
and festive cheer.
Welcome to our
enchanted winter!
Is the Shuswap’s legendary Monashee
powder calling your name?
Make this a winter to remember with a Shuswap ski
vacation. Here, you’re close to resorts and stunning
wilderness. Whether you’re seeking speedy downhill
thrills or solitary moonlight excursions or dream of carving
elegant turns in remote bowls, your wishes can come true
in the Shuswap.
The Shuswap’s geographic situation provides mid-point
access to three world-class ski resorts: Silverstar (Vernon),
Revelstoke Mountain Resort (Revelstoke), and Sun Peaks
(Kamloops) — all within a 1.5 hour drive of the Shuswap.
In addition to resort skiing, the Shuswap also offers
off-piste and backcountry touring. The alpine highlands
surrounding the Shuswap lake system are an unlimited
playground for experienced backcountry travelers with
knowledge in avalanche terrain
and route-finding. Planning is
essential to any safe, successful
ski experience, so be sure
to learn about the trails and
conditions you’ll meet, and ski
prepared with avalanche gear.
Consult the Shuswap Trail Guide
for route information, and visit
avalanche updates.
There’s nothing like skimming
the peaceful, snow-covered
countryside on cross-country
skis! Nordic skiing is fun and
accessible for all, offers a chance
for quiet winter solitude and is
great exercise. The Shuswap
boasts one of BC’s largest Nordic
ski centres, experiences annual
snow packs between one and
three metres, and is home to one
Winter ACTIVITIES
The crisp, star-studded nights. The sparkling,
smooth, snowy landscape. The fresh smell of
evergreen forests. The warmth of family and
friends gathered round a crackling fire. There’s so
much to love about winter and so many ways to
discover its unique charms.
Is there anything more quintessentially Canadian than gliding across
a frozen lake on silvery blades? The Shuswap’s abundant still waters
make perfect, scenic rinks in winter, so pack your skates and lace them
up here! White Lake and Gardom Lake offer the authentic experience,
and you’ll find great outdoor rinks at Putula Park in Mara and the Salmon
Arm Wharf. And visitors looking for winter fun in an indoor refuge can
take their skates for a few laps around the Shaw Centre Arena in
Salmon Arm.
If floating gently over
powder is more your
speed, strap on your
snowshoes and delight in
our exceptional network of
trails and stunning scenery.
Snowshoeing is a great way to
experience the magic of winter,
no matter what your age, and
the only skill you need is the
ability to smile, have fun and
look just a little silly!
Do you love fishing in the
summertime? Rediscover it
in winter! During the colder
months, many lakes freeze
over, offering an ideal setting
for ice fishing. White Lake,
rated as one of the top ten
Rainbow Trout fishing lakes in
North America, is a great spot
40 | www.ShuswapTourism.ca
to try in winter, so bundle up and drop a line.
Sledders will find paradise here, too.
Incredible snow, great terrain and
exceptional access make Shuswap
snowmobiling experiences some of the
best in the province. Many of the area’s
mountains offer groomed access, providing
a smooth ride to the alpine. There’s great
powder, challenging climbs and fun bowls to
play in. Our hills are just right for all types:
new sledders, touring families, fun riders
and thrill seekers alike. But always
remember, safety first! Whenever
you’re snowmobiling in a new area,
it is wise to check with experienced
local riders first regarding snow
and weather conditions, routes and potential
hazards, and check avalanche conditions at
www.avalanche.ca.
What could be better than warming up by
a fire after a crisp winter day outside? For a
complete Shuswap winter experience, pair
your outdoor adventures with a stay in a cozy
backwood chalet. Spend time visiting with
friends, cooking a tasty meal together, and
relaxing in a charming atmosphere. Advance
bookings are necessary, so plan ahead – and
give yourself something to look forward
to! A great winter experience is right
at the doorstep!
We’d love to share the holiday
season with you, too. Join family
and friends in a horse-drawn
open sleigh, and top it off with a
steaming mug of hot cocoa and a
warm cinnamon bun. Visit the CPR Holiday
Train for a great lineup of musical talent
on its boxcar stage. Marvel at the clear
night skies at the Moonlight Lantern Ski,
and trade Christmas baking afterward with
friends old and new. Take in a Santa Claus
parade or become one of Santa’s elves at an
art-making workshop at the renowned SAGA
Public Art Gallery.
There are countless ways to connect
and celebrate throughout our Shuswap
communities all season long. Warm your
