WEtyk: Welcome
Share in the traditions of
ancient First Nations
The history of First Nations in the Shuswap
goes back over 10,000 years. The area is
named after the Secwepemc, an important
Salish nation that has always inhabited the
BC interior. Come live this history. Stroll in the
Neskonlith Meadows (a permit is required),
enjoy bannock at Jack Sam’s Restaurant at
Quaaout Lodge, or take in activities at the
Shuswap Centre.
to experience Secwempc traditions firsthand!
Visit a traditional Secwepemc native village,
participate in a Pow Wow, attend a birch bark
basket or native drum workshop, or book a
guided interpretive tour through the trails in
the Salmon River delta. Cultural workshops
are offered at the Mary Thomas Cultural
Centre and Heritage Sanctuary. Our guides
and instructors provide intimate knowledge
The entire Shuswap area is infused with
rich First Nations history, and many local
bands provide opportunities for visitors
to participate in and learn about
traditional practices.
The Splatsin First Nation, near Enderby,
continues its history and culture
with community events, Pow Wows,
naming ceremonies, and more. Three
Secwepemc Nation bands dwell near
Chase - the Neskonlith, Adams Lake,
and Little Shuswap, also known as
Squilax. Neskonlith Indian Band takes
pride in education and offers a variety
of programs with accreditation through
Thompson Rivers University. Adams Lake
Band is home to a well-known language
immersion school, Chief Atahm School.
Limited hunting on the Little Shuswap
reservation has preserved the
abundance of wildlife in their pristine
environment. The Quaaout Lodge &
Talking Rock Golf Course is the pride of
the Little Shuswap Band.
