City Council continues
with budget workshops

The budget setting process
for the city continued
Wednesday night (after the
Krum News’ deadline) as
the Police and Fire Departments
were scheduled to
present their budget proposals.
Several action items
were on the agenda for this
week’s meeting, including a
loan from First United Bank
for $380,000, which would
include the $250,000 purchase
price for the former
Denton County Barn, the
property intended to be used
by the Department of Public
Works and the Fire Department.
Also on the schedule
for this week’s meeting were
action on a possible No-
vember bond issue election,
conducting a new service
and rate design study for the
city’s water and wastewater
funds, whether to continue
with the current city auditor
or seek bids for the 2012-13
audit, establishing a “ratenot-to-exceed”
for the city’s
property tax, and an executive
session to discuss the
possible purchase, exchange,
lease or value of a parcel of
real estate in the city.
The council conducted
its second budget workshop
on Aug. 7, at which time
Librarian Donna Pierce
and Public Works Director
Adam Farguson presented
their proposals for budget
items.
Pierce said her main
concerns were the establishment
of a second full-time
position at the library and
a salary increase for the library
assistant. She said the
goal was to be sure that there
would be two employees on
duty, not counting the librarian
herself, during the hours
the library was open to the
public, 33 hours a week.
Pierce said the requested
31-cent-per-hour raise for
the library assistant would
bring her wages up to $10
per hour.
Pierce pointed out that,
among her other duties,
work involved in the design
and construction of the new
library Krum voters authorized
at a bond issue

our burdens to the Lord –
and leave them there?

don’t deserve this.
Many can relate to every
one of David’s irrational
thoughts, but how many
can work through them and
come out where David did?
He came to his senses and
three short verses later he

the Lord, for he has been good to

A PASTOR’S THOUGHTS

BURNED INTO OUR MINDS
Two of the WWII veterans
in my congregation reminded
me that Wednesday,
August 14, commemorated
VJ Day, or Victory over Japan
Day. Victory over Europe
Day took place May
8, 1945, so on August 14,
1945, World War II officially
ended.
I’ve seen photographs
of VJ celebrations, but can’t
even begin to enter into the
experience of joy and relief
that must have arrived. And
all alive that day remember
where they were when they
heard the news.
Each generation has
days like that; days irretrievably
burned on our memories.
For the baby-boomers
the memory that went deepest,
especially before 9/11,
was the day of the JFK assassination.
I personally was
in downtown Dallas with a
group of unchaperoned junior
high students. In a manner
inconceivable to today’s
safety culture, we, a bunch
of 13 and 14 year olds, had
been given parental permission
to leave school, walk
3/4 of a mile to a bus stop,
take a bus downtown, see
the President, and then get
ourselves back to school.
Arriving early enough
for a good sight line, we saw
the Kennedy, his lovely wife,
our handsome Governor
and his wife. After waving
excitedly, we made our way
to the bus stop and headed
back. One of our bunch had
a transistor radio (and that is
a dated term) and said, “The
President has been shot!”
We thought he was
joking. We got off the bus
and stopped in a local drug

store with a soda fountain to
snatch a special treat. And
there the TV was blaring
with the news.
This was no joke.
That day changed my
life. It burned into my young
mind a passion to understand
the other. I wanted
to comprehend the kind of
hatred that fueled such destruction,
so that it would
not consume my life. In
time, I realized I wanted to
be one who sought to help
others find release from hatred.
I wanted to help stop
horrors.
So I return now to the
important remembrance of
VJ Day.
A long horror had finally
ended.
So they thought.
And then more horrors
began to reveal themselves.
The Holocaust, that systematic
murder of millions
of Jews and others declared
unacceptable to the people
in power, surfaced in
mind-blowing photos and
news reports. More reports
of the degrading, murderous,
past-inhumane treatment
of prisoners of war on
the Eastern front also began
to make their way around a
news world far slower than
ours.
No, the long horror had
not ended.
And it didn’t end with
the JFK assassination. Nor
has it ended with 9/11 and
the aftermath of that hatefilled
event.
Hate keeps on truckin’.
It plays out on the political
stage, in religious clashes,
behind the closed doors of
families held hostage, in
our own souls where we’d
rather hold our hatred and
self-righteousness than set it
down and find another way.
As a pastor, I see people
consumed by their hate. It
spills out, often in such subtle
ways that the holder of
the hatred remains ignorant
of the leaks. But I see it. I
see it in the tiny little cutting
remarks, malicious snips of
gossip, indifference to others,
greed, self-destructive
behaviors..

AVOID ‘CRAMMING’
FOR COLLEGE SAVINGS
If you have children,
you’re keenly aware that
it’s getting close to backto-school
time. Today, that
might mean you need to
go shopping for notebooks
and pencils. But in the future,
when “back to school”
means “off to college,” your
expenditures are likely to be
significantly greater. Will
you be financially prepared
for that day?
It could be expensive.
The average cost for one
year at an in-state public
school is $22,261, while the
comparable expense for a
private school is $43,289,
according to the College
Board’s figures for the
2012–2013 academic year.
And these costs will probably
continue to rise.
Still, there’s no need to
panic. Your child could receive
grants or scholarships
to college, which would lower
the “sticker price.” But it’s
still a good idea for you to
save early and often.
To illustrate the importance
of getting an early
jump on college funding,
let’s look at two examples
of how you might fund a
college education. A 529
plan is one way — but not
the only way — to save for
college. (The following examples
are hypothetical in
nature and don’t reflect the
performance of an actual
investment or investment
strategy.)
• Example 1: Suppose
you started saving for your
child’s college education
when she was 3 years old.
If you contributed $200 a
month, for 15 years, to a
529 plan that earned 7%
a year, you’d accumulate

of starting to save when
your child was 3, you wait
10 years, until she turns 13.
You put in the same $200
per month to a 529 plan that
earns the same 7% a year.
After five years, when your
daughter has turned 18,
you will have accumulated
slightly less than $15,000.
Clearly, there’s a big
disparity between $64,000
and $15,000. So, if you
don’t want to be in a position
where you have to start
putting away huge sums
of money each month to
“catch up” on your college
savings, you’ll be well advised
to start saving as early
as possible — specifically,
during the first few years of
your child’s life.
Of course, given all
your other expenses, you
may find it challenging to
begin putting away money
for college. And with so
many years to go until you
actually need the money,
it’s tempting to put off your
savings for another day. But
those “other days” can add
up — and before you know
it, college may be looming.
Consequently, you may
want to put your savings on
“autopilot” by setting up a
bank authorization to move
money each month into a
college savings account.
And, as your income rises,
you may be able to increase
your monthly contributions.
Save early, save often:
It’s a good strategy for just
about any investment goal
— and it can make an especially
big difference when it
comes to paying for the high
costs of higher education.

Before the Krumudgeon
begins this week’s voyage
into vibrant verbiage, some
definitions are in order,
thanks to my Christmas gift,
The Concise Oxford American
Dictionary:
Postulate — “A thing
suggested or assumed as true
as the basis for reasoning,
discussion, or belief.”
Post — “Make (information)
available on the Internet.”
Poster — “A … printed
picture, notice or advertisement
displayed in a public
place.”
Poster — “Someone
who sends a message to a
newsgroup.”
The “newsgroup” in
question is Facebook, the Internet
locale on which postulate
posters pop up in, probably,
50 percent of the posts
posters posit (“put forward
as a basis of argument.”)
The Krumudgeon has
indulged in collecting some
of the infinite web wisdom
summed up in these little
notes that get lost among
the chaff some of us have
learned how to ignore as we
search for some wheat. Perhaps
we can resurrect the
Purry Pot into which we can
pour some of these posted
THE KRUMUDGEON
posters.
First, though, an observation:
Since political posters
are almost always designed
to insult people of the opposite
party, I’m ignoring
them. Religious posters, too,
abound on Facebook, but the
Krumudgeon assumes readers
of this weekly word work
are already settled in their religious
beliefs, and they don’t
need any guidance from me.
So what I have done is
picked a few pickled peppers
… oops, how’d I get off on
that tangent? … a few portentous
(done in a pompously
or overly solemn manner
so as to impress) or pointed
(expressing criticism in a direct
and unambiguous way)
potshots.
The Krumudgeon will
post the text of the poster,
then comment about the possibility
of potentially pondering
the thought expressed in
a future column.
Let us proceed:
The highest form of ignorance
is when you reject
something you don’t know
about. — An interesting column
might be built by finding
examples of people who
have refused to learn about
some topic and reject it out
of hand. But what, really, is
meant by “reject.”
The Krumudgeon, for
example, knows nothing
about nuclear physics. I admit
it. I am ignorant about
nuclear physics. I could look
through a high powered microscope
and not be able to
tell the difference between an
atom and a molecule. That
sentence may even be an example
of the Krumudgeon’s
ignorance about the subject.
I can hear the atom laughing
at me.
However, I do not reject
nuclear physics. I have
concerns about the potential
misuse of the power nuclear
physics can generate, but any
rejection that might evolve

but with the morality of
the people who would misuse
nuclear power. On the
other hand, it’s wrong, in my
purportedly humble opinion,
to automatically assume that
anyone who has access to
any form of power will automatically
misuse or abuse it.
If, for another example,
I have no knowledge of how
to play quoits, nor any interest
in learning how to play or
even in watching someone
play, does that really define
“the highest form of ignorance?”
It might be an act of
rejection if I were involved
in a game of horseshoes and
called it quoits.
Peace. It does not mean
to be in a place where there is
no noise, trouble or hard work.
It means to be in the midst of
those things and still be calm
in your heart. — Wouldn’t
it be boring to be in a place
where there is no noise, trouble
or hard work? It might be
hard for me to feel peaceful
in a place where nothing,
nothing is happening.
I’m not the least bit
afraid of hard work, as the
old one-liner goes. I can sit
and watch it all day.
The relationship between
noise and peace depends,
to my way of thinking,
on what kind of noise
it is. It’s hard to sleep when
there’s somebody breaking
up a nearby sidewalk with
a jackhammer, but we who
live in or near downtown
Krum have learned how to
sleep through train traffic.
There’s nothing more
peaceful than sleep. No
sooner did I write those
words than I remembered a
nightmare that came to me
recently. And as far as trouble
is concerned, I’d only be
worried if I were the cause
of trouble.
Back to the noise question.
I feel peaceful when
I hear Frank Sinatra sing,
backed by Nelson Riddle’s
orchestra, but when I hear
Mick Jagger sing, backed
by the remaining Rolling
Stones, I can’t get no satisfaction,
not at all.
No one ever injured their
eyesight by looking on the
bright side of things. — Well!
Does this mean I can look directly
at the sun, particularly
through a magnifying glass,
without setting my eyes on
fire?
Far be it from me to
scoff at the idea of “the
bright side of things.”
On second thought, it’s
more fun to scoff.
A modern day question
might be what happens when
one looks on the bright side
of things. First, one has to
come upon the bright side of
things. Maybe we could look
on the bright side of things if
we could ever get out of this
tunnel we’re in. Any resemblance
to either a political
or a religious statement was
purely coincidental.

“That was such a good
sleep! I feel so refreshed!” said
no parent ever. — Having never
shared the joy of parenthood,
I can only guess at the
meaning of a sarcastic statement
like this. Surely the kid
grows up so he or she doesn’t
come crying in the middle of
the night when he or she is
15 or 16. The Krumudgeon
can’t say that he knows nothing
about parenthood. I did
have parents, two of them in
fact. I may have known more
about parenthood than they
did, said all children ever.
I didn’t reject parenthood,
though I did have
nightmares about changing
diapers. Parenthood simply
didn’t happen to me.
While I can’t pass judgment
on the above poster,
from my personal experience
I can relate to the statement
if it were “That was such
a good sleep! I feel so refreshed!”
said no incontinent
senior citizen ever.
Holding a grudge is like
letting someone live rent free
in your head. — One of the
blessings of this old man’s
life is that I learned how to
avoid holding grudges. It
isn’t that I was an exponent
of forgiveness; it’s more like
my reaction was simply,
“Consider the source.”
It was as if I had been
born with a duck’s back. I
can’t imagine being “Mudge
with a Grudge.”
If I were to write an essay
based upon this particular
topic, I would change the
wording to “Loving is like
letting someone live rent free
in your heart.”
My doctor’s concerned
about my high blood pressure.
I told him next time don’t leave
me sitting in the waiting room
for two hours. — Whoever
posted this poster must be an
impatient patient. Why do
you think it’s called a waiting
room?
Here’s some advice for
your next visit to your doctor’s
office. Bring your own
magazine … or book … or
mp3 player with earphones.
But don’t forget to turn off
your cellphone.
Hardships often prepare
ordinary people for extraordinary
destiny. — Is often really
the correct adverb for this
poster? On a scale of never-to-always,
it could be seldom,
occasionally, or sometimes,
as well as often. The
Krumudgeon’s vote would
be occasionally.
I don’t know if I should
consider myself lucky that I
have never faced real hardship.
There’ve been some
bumps in the road — on a
scale of never-to-always, I’d
say seldom. But hardship?
I’ve never missed a meal.
Writing this column every
week is my extraordinary
destiny.
So much for psychobabble.
I’m sorry, I didn’t realize
you are an expert on my life
and how I should live it. Please

term. Stream of consciousness
based on this topic leads
the Krumudgeon’s mind to a
50-year-old Jerry Lewis song
that begins, “I’m a little busybody,
though I know it’s very
shoddy, I insist on knowing
what is going on with everybody;
always prying, always
spying, I’m defying anyone
to try and hide a fact from
me …”
That’s Jerry Lewis, not
Jerry Lee Lewis.
That song is not as close
to “on-topic” as another
direction stream of consciousness
leads — I can see
Snoopy posing the above sarcastic
comment to Lucy.
Worrying does not
take away today’s troubles.
It takes away tomorrow’s
peace. — OK, I confess. I
do worry, but about inconsequential
things. My worries,
though, are not about today’s
troubles. I’ll lie awake
at night, sometimes for as
long as minutes, worrying
about tomorrow’s potential
troubles. By the time tomorrow
turns into today, those
worries are gone.
I might worry today
about something entirely
unrelated to yesterday’s worry,
but when I apply a little
personal psychobabble to the
worrisome question about
worry, I eventually find myself
emulating the legendary
Alfred E. Neuman —
“What? Me worry?”
Speaking of peace, as
we were a few paragraphs
ago, I remember, too, a word
of advice I received from a
young lady I knew 52 years
ago, when she suggested that
“One man’s peace is another
man’s poison.”
I learned something
valuable from those seven
words.
I also learned something

valuable from a roommate in
the Army 56 years ago, who
told me, “Sometimes we say
in jest the things we really
mean.”
A society is defined not
only by what it creates, but
by what it refuses to destroy.
— Please, dear country, let’s
refuse to destroy common
sense, common ground, and
common cause. We are all,
all of us, each and every one,
in this together.
If each day is a gift, I’d
like to know where to return
Mondays. — The Krumudgeon
turns this topic over to
fans of science fiction, with
this picky thought in passing:
If you could return Mondays,
you’d soon be griping
about Tuesdays.
If we’re looking for the
source of our troubles, we
shouldn’t test people for drugs,
we should test them for stupidity,
ignorance, greed and love
of power. — If it weren’t for
the reference to drug testing,
both liberals and conservatives
would agree wholeheartedly
with this statement.
Libertarians would
agree with the whole statement.
Each side, though,
would disagree totally on
the definitions of stupidity,
ignorance, greed and love
of power. Common ground,
but no common cause.
Exit Facebook, close laptop,
get into bed, unlock phone,
check facebook. — Words of
wifisdome if I’ve ever heard
them.
As far as computer technology
is concerned, however,
there’s more to it than
Facebook.

A pendulum swings frantically between extremes, eventually
lessening the arc until finally coming to a complete
stop in the middle.
That describes the progression of Arbitration pretty
darn accurately.
Arbitration is an agreement reached by the parties to
submit their dispute to a third party who makes a binding
decision. It has been heralded as a wonderful way to shorten
the legal process, lessen attorney fees and costs and have
an expert, as opposed to 12 nice but uninformed citizens,
decide factual and legal issues.
Ha.
Immediately upon passage of the arbitration laws,
Judges rushed to move cases out of their courts and into
the hands of arbitrators. It became so bad, litigators joked,
that even whispering the word “arbitration” in a busy court
would result in the case being ordered out.
It’s now been over a decade since the arbitration pendulum
swung to its highest point. Under the weight of whispers
that arbitration is unfair, prohibitively expensive and
favors big business, it’s slowly coming back to the middle.
What’s changed? More people have undergone the Arbitration
experience, and haven’t been happy. Just look at
the disadvantages:
• You pay for the privilege of using the arbitrator and
the forum. It’s not unusual for fees and costs to run $30,000
or $40,000. Contrast that with a public courtroom, which
is free.
• The contract provides where and who – as in the arbitration
may be in some distant state, and the arbitrator
may be chosen by the other side. That’s great if you wrote
the contract, not so good if you didn’t have any bargaining
power to change the terms.
• You give up the right to a jury – a right so important
that it is prominent in both the State and Texas constitutions.
• You have no right to discovery – like witness statements,
letters, emails, files or other documents. The Arbitrator
may, in his complete discretion, allow some to one side
or the other.
• The rules of evidence – those very rules that keep out
self-serving recitations of conversations, documents that haven’t
been shown to be accurate, and expert testimony from
people are aren’t experts on anything – are followed loosely,
if at all.
• You have no right of appeal. If the Arbitrator is wrong
on the law or the facts, then that’s just tough. You can’t get
a review of the decision.
• The decision is private. This is wonderful for some
companies, who may not want you to know that they pulled
the same scam or sold the same faulty product to hundreds
of other people.
And now we’re swinging the other way. The Courts are
finally realizing that unfair bargaining positions in contracts
can lead to unfair results.
And Arbitrators, who have pushed this unfair alternative
system on the unwitting public? If we’re lucky, they’ll
be standing right under that old pendulum when it swings
back to the middle.

operations as Farguson’s
attention is increasingly devoted

the city’s new wastewater
treatment plant.
Farguson also submitted
a list of equipment he
hoped could be added for
his department. Topping the
list was the establishment of

“Right now,” Farguson
said, “the only way we
know if something goes
wrong is if somebody calls
us and tells us if something
went wrong, or we come up
on it the next morning when
we’re visiting wells.”
He said there have been
“multiple multiples” of such
problems.
“I think it [the SCADA
system] would pull us out of
some potential disasters,”
Farguson said.
The cost would be
$89,000 for the Water Department
and $37,000 for
the Sewer Department.

For the Parks and Recreation
Department, Farguson
requested $22,000
to replace a 23-year-old
tractor, $11,000 for a commercial
zero-turn mower,
and $3,800 for a landscape
trailer.
Noting that a Geographical
Information
System that would identify
where every water and
sewer line are located, was
identified in July 2009 by
the Texas Commission on
Environmental Quality as
an item the city needs, he
added $50,000 for Phase
I of the GIS program to
his request list. Mayor Terri
Wilson responded that
TCEQ approved delaying
the installation of such a
system until the rehabilitation
of the city’s lift stations
was completed.
Farguson also included
in his budget requests two
projects at the city’s Westside
Park — $18,000 to repair
the infield on Baseball
Field D that he said had
been improperly built and
$75,000 to regrade and sod
the football/soccer field.
About the baseball infield,
Farguson said the

soccer field was not graded
properly when it was installed,
leaving poor drainage
and “multiple low areas
that hold water.”
Farguson told the council
he believes all of the items
he was requesting would be
covered by increased water
and sewer revenues.
“The city of Krum has
grown tremendously,” Farguson
said.
Since 2009, he said,
there have been 500 new
connections, and new home
construction in the Saddlebrook
and Aspen Park subdivisions
will continue that
growth.
“We’ve had in the
month of July probably
close to 30 meters,” he
pointed out. “It’s not uncommon
to end up setting
anywhere between eight to
12 meters a week on some
weeks. On slow weeks, you
may be looking at three to
five.”
He said the houses in
Aspen Park are “popping
up like dollar weeds in your
yard. It is mind-boggling
how quick they can get these
things built.”
He said there have been
287 connections added since
October. As of July 22, he
said, the total number of
connections in the city was
1,724. He estimated that
between that date and the
end of the next fiscal year,
the total would reach 1,800,
an increase of 4.45 percent.
The revised estimated water
sales for the current fiscal
year are $704,588, but that
estimate “didn’t include
the tremendous jump that
you get with the summer
months.” Taking past summers
into consideration, he
said he and Finance Director
Chris Speights increased
the estimate to $846,555.
Adding 4.45 percent to that
sum brought a projected water
sales revenue figure for
2013-14 to $884,246.70.
He did the same thing
for sewer, looking at the
number, adding 4.45 percent,
to come up with budgeted
revenue for the next
fiscal year.
Adding total revenues
to the sales figures, Farguson
said he came up with
$1,039,200 for water, with
$1,003,289 in expenditures,
and $980,600 in sewer revenue,
$968,688.99 in expenditures,
a total of $47,812 in
the black.
All revenue and expenditure
budget figures submitted
by department heads
are subject to change by the
City Council as the budget
process continues.

Disease, a rare autoimmune
disease in which antibodies
attack the lungs and kidneys,
leading to bleeding
from the lungs and kidney
failure.
Jon said this week that
his wife’s kidneys are currently
functioning at 0.08%
percent of normal capacity.
Dani will remain hospitalized
for the time being, and
Jon said they are looking
into dialysis treatments at
their home in Krum.
While at the hospital,
Dani has undergone aggressive
treatment for the disorder
through chemotherapy,
dialysis, and blood replacement.
“We would both so appreciate
anybody who can
donate blood at the blood
drive this Friday,” Jon said.
“All blood donated will be
designated to my wife and
go towards her personal
blood bank. With the blood
replacement treatments she
is receiving, we sure are in
need of this.”

Q. Every day, my mailbox
is stuffed to the brim with
junk mail. Is there any way I
can get rid of some of this?
A. It takes some effort, but
you can cut down on your junk
mail in a big way. The Federal
Trade Commission has a page
that lets you opt out of all
sorts of advertising mail. You
can use a service like Catalog
Choice or PaperKarma to cut
down on the influx of mail,
too. Remember to not post
your physical address online,
since many advertisers can see
it if it’s on the Internet. Once
you’ve taken these steps, it may
take a while for the mail to

you already have a digital organization
system, just use an app
like CamScanner to scan your
receipts. You can save them as
PDF files and transfer them to
your computer with ease.
Q. I’m looking to buy a
gadget for watching online
video. Should I get a Roku,
Apple TV or Google’s new
Chromecast?
A. It depends on what you
want. If you use iTunes, Apple
TV ($100) is your only choice.
The Roku has more non-Apple
streaming options, and a range
of cheaper models. The $35
Chromecast is a good budget
solution, and works with both
Android and iOS, on PC and
Mac. But it has fewer streaming
options at the moment. Plus, it
requires a computer with the
Chrome browser, a smartphone
or a tablet to control it.
Q. I have an expensive
surgery coming up. My friend
suggested I look for help on
crowdfunding sites, but most
of those ban medical bill projects.
Do any sites allow it?
A. Yep. Some sites are
designed specifically for medical
bills. Giveforward lets you
create a site for yourself or for
a friend in need. It can be for
a treatment, surgery or just for
the cost of living with a disease.
You can even crowdfund a funeral
service or other memorial
costs. There are other sites not
specifically designed for this
purpose, but you can use them
to help you out. For example,
Take Them a Meal is a good
way to offset the cost of food
to help save for your treatment.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help
on your social media profiles or
blogs, as well.
Q. I installed a few programs
I downloaded online
and now I have toolbars in my
browser that won’t go away.
I’ve seen programs online that
offer to kill these. Do they
work?
A. A few do, most notably
Adwcleaner. However, most of
these programs are scams and
will leave you with more toolbars
than you started with.
Even the ones that do
work, like Adwcleaner, can kill
add-ons you actually want and
mess with your bookmarks.
It’s best to clean up toolbars
yourself. Start by uninstalling
the toolbar programs
and then change your browser
settings back manually. The
toolbars are usually hiding in
your browser’s “add-ons” or
“extensions” menu. Fix your
default search provider and
home page in the “options” or
“settings” menus.
Q. My friend told me he
got a gift card just for watching
television. He’s messing
with me, right?
A. Maybe not. There are
plenty of new sites, apps and
services that offer unique rewards
just for watching TV.
Many of them even recommend
new shows, offer reviews
and share what you’re watching
with your friends. The
most popular of the bunch is
Viggle. Once you download it,
you check into any show and
get points for every minute you
watch. Rack up enough points
and you can earn discounts at
Fandango, Groupon, Starbucks
and more. If you just want to
connect with your friends, try
apps such as GetGlue or Zeebox.
They make TV watching
more social!
Q. I’d really like Microsoft
Office, but I don’t want to
pay a subscription fee for the
new version. Are there free alternatives?
A. There’s plenty, actually.
LibreOffice is a good place
to start. It has alternatives to
Word, PowerPoint and Excel
and a few other programs.
Even if you don’t use them all,
it’s the best place to start when
you’re creating your own Office
suite. As for Outlook, Mozilla’s
Thunderbird is a great free alternative.
LibreOffice is missing a
Publisher replacement, so use
Scribus for that. If you need
a note-taking replacement
for OneNote, try Evernote or
SpringPad.
Q. I have thousands of
songs on my computer that I
need to re-tag. I see paid programs
that claim to make it
easy. Should I use those or is
there a free option?
A. Yes, there are free options
and they’ll organize your
music just as well. Use a program
like MusicZen. It moves
and organizes your files automatically
and you don’t even
need to install anything. You
just pick the folder you want
to organize and the destination
folder. It works surprisingly
quickly and lets you create duplicates,
too. That way, if something
goes wrong, you don’t
have to worry about reorganizing
everything yourself.
Make sure you test things on
a few small folders before you
tackle your whole collection,
though.
