3 Friday, May 31, 2013 v Krum News v email: krum@lemonspublications.comLETTERS TO THE EDITORThank YouThank you to all whovoted in favor of the bondto build a new Krum PublicLibrary on our donatedland. We sincerely appreciateyour support.Library DirectorDonna Pierce and theKrum Public Library BoardPersecution ofLegal Gun TradeIn response to ‘Saddlebrookhomeowners fight ATFfirearms license’. 5/10/20013One-sided as this articleis, it reveals some very disturbingthings. While our governmentwas instituted to protectAmericans’ individualrights, the Obama administrationand the ATF areout to trample on peoplewho wish to exercise them.Investigator Jansen of theATF ratted on the applicantfor a firearms license to theMeddlers of Saddlebrookin order to inhibit the applicant’sright to conduct business(a peaceful activity) onhis own property. This wasprobably done because theapplication and the personwho submitted it are clean. There’s no need to sandbaga failing applicant. Notmentioned in this article isthat this is the same agencythat supplied guns to Mexicanborder gangs throughits Fast and Furious operations. The Saddlebrook Busybodiescite fantasy ratherthan facts. They have noevidence this home basedbusiness will cause a trafficproblem, yet they argue thepoint anyway.Nonsense, a good businessmanwill advise customersto avoid heavy trafficperiods, he can set appointmentsand he may deliver.Nosey neighbor Boneburgerimagines that children willbe adversely affected by seeingguns carried in and outof the residence.More nonsense, purchaseditems can be carriedout of the premises in theboxes they arrived in viaUPS and Fed-Ex. Nevermind that kids use virtualweapons in the games theyplay and see their use portrayedin movies, TV showsand in the news. (As anaside: witness the happy facesat a gun range. The happiestfaces are worn by thefamilies that shoot together.Respect is a two way street, and a goal to be achievedand maintained.)Lacking any real argumentor actual evidence fortheir case, the lead meddlersdemonstrate their lack ofprinciples for good measure.Seems according the HOA’sDeclaration of Covenantsthey claim the prerogativeto pronounce anything theydislike ‘noxious or offensive’.In other words theyclaim the privilege to makeup the rules as they go. Nevermind that there is no rightto violate the rights of anotherperson.Since there are no statementsfrom the person whomade the application for thelicense to sell arms and thereis no reference to even theattempt to gain an interview, the only conclusion to bedrawn is that the ‘reporter’didn’t want to include theirside of the story. Also missingfrom the article are theopinions of the applicantsactual nearby neighbors. The claim that this potentialbusiness would disturbthose residents by the SaddlebrookMalcontents is unsupported. This article, the ATFand the Saddlebrook Snoopsall fail the smell test.Robert ArcherKrum, TXNAMI Denton County (NationalAlliance of Mental Illness) offerseducation and support groupsMay is National MentalHealth Awareness Month, and NAMI Denton County, the local affiliate of theNational Alliance on MentalIllness, sponsors severalsupport groups each monthfor family members, friends, and caregivers as well asadults living with mentalillness. On Monday eveningsfrom 7 - 8:30 p.m., thereare two meetings, a NAMIFamily Support Group anda Recovery InternationalSupport Group, at CrossroadsBible Church, 8101FM 407 (Justin Road), inDouble Oak, which is nearHighland Village.Another Recovery InternationalSupport Groupis now meeting on Wednesdays1 – 2:30 p.m. at theDenton County MHMRCenter, Room 193, at 2519Scripture, in Denton. 4 Friday, May 31, 2013 v Krum News v www.lemonspublications.com v email: krum@lemonspublications.comBy John CallarmanThere aresome thingsI do not wantto knowIn November 2010when WikiLeaks releasedsecret U.S. State Departmentcables, the Krumudgeonlooked at the apparentscandal with mixed emotions. As a newsman for mostof my life, primarily on thelocal level, I’ve been awarethat government agencies atevery level have establishedthe concept of classifieddocuments that the generalpublic should not be allowedto see. Unfortunately, far toooften, those governmentalagencies have classified documentsbased upon how embarrassingthey might be togovernment personnel ratherthan legitimate securityreasons. The tendency to hidecontroversial opinions thatlead to disputed decisionsfrom the voting public, alongwith diligent news media attemptsto uncover cover-ups,have resulted in most states,The Krum News is published weekly, each Friday, byLemons Publications Inc. The Krum News is distributedFREE to newsstands throughout Krum each Thursdayafternoon. You can find it at any convenience store, bank, restaurant, and at other local businesses.Subscriptions for home delivery are available for $20 peryear for residents in Krum (zip code 76249) and $23 peryear for those outside of Krum. The staff of the Krum News includes:THE KRUMUDGEONas well as the federal government, establishing Freedomof Information and OpenMeetings laws that give verynarrow parameters to whatcan be discussed behindclosed doors or what documentscan be withheld fromthe general public. As a newsman, primarilyat the local level, Ihave not been in a positionto have, put in my lap, thekind of top-secret informationthat should not becomepublic knowledge, information that could, forexample, put the lives ofsecret government agents injeopardy. The problem thatarises with attaching a topsecret classification to government-basedinformationis when decision makers’embarrassment becomes themain factor in applying thatclassification. Those U.S. StateDepartment cables thatWikiLeaks obtained andcirculated contained a lot ofmaterial that should neverhave been classified, but thecables also contained vitalinformation that put America’sbest interests in jeopardy. Our strategies, and, particularly, our implementationof those strategies, toinfiltrate and neutralize terroristorganizations aroundthe world qualifies as informationthat should notbe available to the generalpublic. The mixed emotions Ifelt about WikiLeaks camefrom the sense that our intelligenceagencies had a betterhandle on potential terroristactivities than I had beenable to guess from the scantinformation that was availableto me as an avid readerof a variety of news reports. The problem is that anythingI might know aboutour intelligence operations, our enemies would know… because the knowledgewould be somewhere outthere in the public domain. An essay by syndicatedcolumnist Leonard PittsJr., headlined “The powerof terrorism lies in its psychologicaleffect,” found inSunday’s Houston Chronicle, and an article in the“Britain” section of the May25 edition of “The Economist,”headlined “An atrocityin London, Return to oldstyleterror,” point out howwell America and Englandhave done to prevent massdeaths caused by terroristson the soil of the world’smajor English-speaking nations. The Boston Marathonbombs were the first “successful”terrorist attack onU.S. soil since September11, 2001, with one possibleexception. The slaying of aBritish soldier last week inLondon by two terroristswho posed afterward forbystanders with cellphonecameras was the first “successful”terrorist attack onthe British mainland sinceJuly 2005 when bus and subwayattacks killed 52 peopleand hurt 770-plus.How many potential“lone wolf ” terrorist attackshave we, America and GreatBritain, thwarted? We knowof a few, but do we out-ofthe-loop,grassroots Americansknow of others thathave been halted becauseour security people learnedof them? What does commonsense tell us?It tells the Krumudgeonthat there are many more,as “The Economist” putsit, “desperate, disorganizedyoung men … looking for apurpose in their lives and …susceptible to religious extremism”in both the UnitedKingdom and the UnitedStates.“Sometimes, in the heatof visceral revulsion, we forgetan essential truth aboutterrorism,” Pitts writes.“Namely, that the peoplewho do these things are theopposite of powerful. Nonstatesponsored terror is atactic chosen almost exclusivelyby the impotent.”Pitts offered lessonslearned by Americans inthe Civil War and Britonsin World War II as a significantperspective on theinability of non-state sponsoredterror to destroy eithercountry:“The United Statesonce tore itself in half andsurvived the wound. Couldit really be destroyed by menusing airliners as guidedmissiles? Britain was oncebombarded senseless foreight months straight andlived to tell the tale. Could itreally be broken by two maniacswith machetes?”“Of course not,” Pittsanswered his own question. But past and potentialrandom acts of terror havebeen “successful” in onemajor sense, Pitts implies,by making us “appalled, frightened, irrational and, most of all, convinced thatwe are next and nowhere issafe.”Referring to both theBoston and London actsof terrorism, “The Economist”notes that, “Attacksof this kind are much harderto prevent than are morecomplex plots that involveterrorist networks providingtraining and funding. But they have become morecommon as intelligence onsuch networks has improvedand American drone attackshave taken their toll onal-Qaeda bases in Pakistan’stribal areas.”There is, of course, avast difference between interceptingrandom acts ofterror on American and Britishsoil than there is in preparingfor “complex plotsthat involve terrorist networks”in places like Libya,Somalia, Yemen, and similarMiddle East and NorthAfrican outposts. Benghaziwasn’t the first time Americandiplomats were murderedin Islamic-orientedcountries.The Krumudgeon hasbeen aware, since 1956, ofthe potential for state-sponsoredterror inspired byerroneous interpretationsof the “word” of whatevergod might be perceived bywhatever state leadership tocause real damage. If a nationruled by jihadists whobelieve that killing non-believersis their ticket to everlastinglife were to gaincontrol of even a handful ofnuclear weapons, those rulerswould not fear annihilationin retaliation. What is hard for manyof us to do is to differentiatebetween those with suchradical, uncivilized beliefsand those who have escapedfrom the ignorance of theDark Ages. What is hard,I suspect, for many of theMuslim faith to do mightbe to differentiate betweenthose Christians who haveestablished America as aland of religious freedomand those who conductedthe Crusades between 1,000and 500 years ago.The Krumudgeon seesa parallel, too, between jihadistacts of terror and therandom mass killings bymentally disturbed individualssuch as at Columbineor Newtown. The parallelis not that the latter slayingswere terrorism but that theyare as difficult to prevent. How “The Economist”summarized the hackingdeath of the British soldierin London last week couldapply to the mass slayingsthat killed children in Coloradoand Connecticut:“The real significanceof this horrible incident isthat it is a reminder of howlittle it takes for somethingthis shocking to happen. The security services, for alltheir success in recent years, can’t win every time.”The exception referredto above, of course, is theslaying in 2009 at Fort Hoodby a depraved Army psychiatristof 12 military personnel, plus the wounding of 30more. There was reluctanceon the part of authoritiesfour years ago to identifythe slayers’ action as an actof terrorism, which speaksmore of dialectics than oflogic, as, I suppose, wouldbe the decision not to usethe word “alleged” in thisparagraph.Pitts cited a couple ofexamples of individual reactionto 9/11 in his essay;a lady who told him shewould never enter a skyscraperagain, and his AuntRuth, who, during the anthraxscare, required his uncleto open all mail on thefront lawn.“I am also thinking ofthe country itself,” Pitts continued,“which, in responseto the 9/11 attacks launchedtwo wars … at a ruinouscost in lives, treasure andcredibility that will haunt usfor years.”When it comes to applyingthe word “successful” toterrorist activity, I wouldbe inclined to suspect thatOsama bin-Laden went tohis grave believing that 9/11was highly successful. Thelives of American soldiers, the trillion-plus dollars wehave spent in Iraq and Afghanistanand the unreststirred up in other parts ofthe Middle East and NorthAfrica have had a long-termdisruptive effect far beyondthe comparatively tiny costof financing 9/11.Pitts sums it up betterthan the Krumudgeon can:“Their most lasting violenceis not physical, butpsychological — the impositionof fear, the loss of security.“We cannot controlwhat such people do. Butwe can control our reactionthereto. … the only powerthey have is the power wegive them.”To which the Krumdgeonadds that we mustcontinue to try to identifypotential perpetrators on thehome front and fortify ourfacilities abroad. But I do not want toknow how we are doing this, because, if I know, our enemiescan find out, and candevise methods of thwartingour defenses.Beware, America, butdon’t be afraid. Finally, a word of adviceto our government:Don’t tell me all the thingsthat we are doing to protectAmericans at home andabroad, but don’t lie to meabout the occasional failures. The Krumudgeoncan be reached atJohnCallarman@msn.comNow Enrolling…2013 KISDSummer FUN ProgramJune 10-August 16Lee Ann LemonsPublisherEmail: lee@lemonspublications.comBlake LemonsSportsEmail: blake@lemonspublications.comJulie StokesAdvertising DirectorEmail: julie@lemonspublications.comJohn CallarmanVolunteer WriterEmail: JohnCallarman@msn.comTo submit news items to the Krum News, please email:krum@lemonspublications.comThe weekly deadline to submit news articles, photos, andletters to the editor is each Tuesday at 5 p.m. Items acceptedafter the deadline will be published only as timeand space permit. No doubt. I studiedat the OU College of Dentistryfor four years and loved it. Ilove OU, but it wasn’t a mandatein our family that mykids went there and I didn’tcoerce them, even though itmay seem like it,” Dr. Habernjoked. The changes in orthodonticshave been extensive,he said, making the entireprocess of braces a completelydifferent experience fromthe often-painful, often-longprocess that many adults rememberfrom their youth.Advances in early treatmenthave greatly lessened the needfor teeth to be pulled to makeMKT-1918-Aroom for braces, and if parentsbring their children inearly enough, the entire processcan be completed in amatter of months as opposedto years.“I think a lot of peopleare surprised that kids aregetting braces earlier than inthe past, but orthodontics hascome such a long way,” Dr.Habern said. “When I wasin school, the thought wasthat you had to have all yourpermanent teeth – at say 12 to14 years old – and fix thingsthen. You generally had toextract about four teeth tocreate room to get the teethstraight, which was the startof a usually two-part processof straightening the teeth andfixing the bite.”But in the mid-1980s,advances in orthodonticschanged everything. Althoughalmost all patients have someform of teeth-crowding beforetreatment, there are nowsmall appliances that can beplaced in the patient’s mouthto actually widen the bones, which in turn widens thearch of the mouth and createsroom for permanent teeth.CongratulationsGraduates“The future belongs to thosewho believe in the beauty of their dreams.”Eleanor RooseveltStart your financial future with a solid strategy.May your futures be full of good health, happiness, success and prosperity.Allen Chick, AAMS®Financial Advisor.1640 W Chapman Suite 200Sanger, TX 76266940-458-7866www.edwardjones.comMember SIPC“It’s not like people havetoo many teeth and that someshould be pulled. The problemis that the teeth are justa little too big for the amountof bone you have,” Dr. Habernexplained. “But if youcan make the bone fit, thenmagically you have room forall your teeth. With 90% to95% of patients, you just putthe appliance in and widenthe arches. The nice partabout this is that it works reallyquickly. We can create thatroom in three months, andnow the patient won’t have tohave teeth taken out.”The best time to do this,he said, is when children arebetween the ages of 7-and-ahalfto about 12. By about age12, most of the child’s permanentteeth have appeared, andtreatment changes gears atthat point.“I’ve put expanders inmany kids who are around 8years old. It’s a really cool, really easy process, but youneed to have this done whenthey’re young and still havebaby teeth for this reason –with the expanders, we wantto be able to use the baby teethas anchors to push against sothe bone will change shape. Here’s the thing about babyteeth – they won’t move. Ican barely move one just atiny, tiny bit if I wanted to,while with permanent teeth, Ican move them an inch,” hesaid. “But with baby teeth asanchors, the bone itself willchange shape, and it’s justawesome.”Once the space has beencreated by the expander appliance, after only three monthsor so, the teeth have room tobe straightened. At that point,Dr. Habern puts a few traditionalbraces on the frontteeth to get them aligned, andthose braces are only worn forsix to eight months.“That’s the beauty aboutseeking treatment when yourchild is younger,” Dr. Habernsaid. “Three months of an expanderand maybe six to eightmonths of actual braces andyou’re done. That’s the firstphase of treatment. Hopefullyyou don’t have a secondphase because this first phasehas resolved the issue. Theteeth will be perfectly straightand there will be room forpermanent teeth.”Once this process is complete, patients wear a retainerand come in for follow-upvisits. If a phase two of treatmentis necessary, that costis deducted from the originalprice of treatment, as are follow-upvisits and care.“The only time you’dneed phase two is if the biteisn’t correct. Then we mayneed to put the braces backon, but it’s a lot faster. Yourteeth are already straight andthey have space, permanently,”Dr. Habern explained.“We just use rubber bands tofix the bite, and phase two isa year or less of treatment. We are careful to select ourphase one treatment patientsbecause the last thing wewant is for you to be back inbraces. Most kids are greatcandidates, though. I know Isound like a teeth geek, butthe whole process is actuallyreally, really cool. If youget rid of the crowding early, you’ve fixed it forever.”For children whose permanentteeth have begun toappear, which usually beginsat age 11 or 12, Dr. Habernsaid the process of straighteningteeth through braces is abit longer, but still miles awayfrom the three-plus years ittook decades ago.“For kids age 12 and older,it’s still a relatively quickprocess. When I was in dentalschool, you wore braces forthree to four years. Now I cangenerally get everything donein 18 to 20 months,” he said.“Here’s the thing – I really, really don’t like to take outteeth. I try hard not to, andeven when a child is a bit older, braces will work perfectlywithout me having to removepermanent teeth.”The majority of new patientsseen at Habern Orthodonticsin Sanger are in therange of age 12 to 13, andthey generally are looking atwearing braces for under twoyears, with the one of thebiggest determinants of thequestion of how long beingpatient cooperation.“I’m like any other doctoror dentist who says this– if you do what you’re supposedto do, whether it bewearing the rubber bands orany other instruction – you’llbe in braces for a much shortertime,” Dr. Habern said.“But for any kid who mightbe afraid of braces, don’t be.Pain-wise, it is completelydifferent from the past. Historically, stainless steel wireswere wrapped around heavybands. Patients would almostbe in tears. Now we use nickeltitanium wires, which are reallysoft. Comfort-wise, it’s anamazing advancement. I canhonestly say I’ve never seena patient of mine cry. Thingshave really changed.”About 15% to 20% of Dr.Habern’s patients are adults, some of whom choose traditionalbraces while othersventure to clear braces, bracesworn behind the teeth, ortreatment via Invisalign, asystem that straightens teethvia custom-made trays. Treatmentwith Invisalign is traditionallysix to twelve months.“For adults who havenever had braces before orwho need to fix their bite,Invisalign is a good option,”he said. “It’s never, ever toolate to get braces and get yourteeth fixed.”Inside the office at HabernOrthodontics in Sanger, patient chairs are lined upside-by-side, creating anopen, fun atmosphere. Complimentaryslushies and icecream await patients in thelobby after an appointment, and parents are encouragedto sit with their kids duringtreatment and check-ups.“Most check-ups take 15to 20 minutes,” Dr. Habernsaid. “It takes me 15 minutesto put braces on in the firstplace. We want the parentsto be involved in all of it, aswell as hear the instructionswe give our patients. We tryour best to make it a fun atmospherein here, and to getyou in and out as quickly aswe can while also being completelythorough.”Habern Orthodonticsworks individually with parentsto set up a payment plan,or to also work with them filinginsurance and figuring outco-pays.Initial consultations arefree, and Dr. Habern is adamantthat if he believes a patientdoesn’t need orthodontictreatment, he will tell themso.“Not everybody needsorthodontics. There is no costto see me a first time. Call usand when you come in, we’llexplain everything. If youdon’t need treatment, we’lltell you that. But it’s betterto get things looked at, andbringing your child in earlycan make a difference inthe amount of time neededfor treatment,” he said. “I’mmore than thrilled to have alook at any patient, and I willtell them the absolute truthabout what does or doesn’tneed to be done.”As for the community ofSanger, Dr. Habern says hisfirst year in business here hasbeen nothing but positive.“All the dentists inSanger – John Gage, StacieTest, and John Reed – havebeen awesome. We work wellwith them,” he said. “Sangeris a community that is reallyembracing, but you have toembrace it, too. If you wantto be a part of the community, the community wants youto be here. That’s just how itis, and how it should be. It’sbeen really great workingwith the school district. Thecommunity and people haveall been super, and we’relooking forward to our housebeing finished so we canmove here. I couldn’t ask fora more friendly or fun placeto be. I’m telling you – peoplearen’t that way everywhere.I’m very happy here.”As for his day-to-daywork routine, Dr. Habernfinds great joy in meeting patientsand seeing them evolve, with the culminating momentof joy being the day a patient’sbraces are removed.“I love kids, which isone reason I chose orthodontics.Kids are just the funnestthings in the world,” he said.“When we get to the end oftreatment and see the result, then go back in time and lookat the ‘before’ photo, it’s unbelievable. The before and theafter – the big change – to seethe smiles on their faces. It’sso much fun. The big thing isthat I just love kids and wantto help them. And that’s thebeauty about Sanger – thatthere are good people herewho care about the kids. Theentire community seems torally around the kids. 9Friday, May 31, 2013 v Krum News v www.lemonspublications.comv email: krum@lemonspublications.comKIM KOMANDO Q&AQ. I don’t want to pay big bucks for a new tablet. Is it OKto buy a refurbished gadget?A. Sure, as long as you do it the right way. Visit the manufacturerof the gadget you want. Apple, Amazon and many otherofficial retailers have a refurbished store section with low prices.Try to find “factory refurbished” gadgets, since these often comewith some form of a warranty and are repaired and tested thoroughly.Be careful shopping for used gadgets. While they can costless, they are a much riskier buy than a refurbished gadget. Startyour search on a site like Worth Monkey. This will give you a fairstarting price to look for when you’re shopping.Q. I’m thinking about selling my smartphone to help payfor a new one. How do I make sure my information is completelyerased?A. The easiest way is with a factory reset. This will delete everythingon your phone, so make sure your information is backedup before you start. On an iPhone, go to Settings>>General>>Reset.Tap “Erase All Content and Settings” and then tap the bigred button that pops up. For Androids, go to Settings>>Personal>>Backup& Reset. Tap the Factory data reset button. Fromhere, you can delete your gadget’s SD card if you want, too. If youwant to wipe a stolen or lost phone remotely, look into apps likeFind My iPhone or Carbonite Mobile.Q. My wrists and forearms start to really hurt after usingmy computer for a while. My eyes tend to get a little blurry, too. What am I doing to cause this?A. I’m not a doctor, but instinct tells me that you’re usingyour computer without taking breaks. I recommend people takefrequent breaks when they’re doing computer work, usually aboutonce an hour. BreakTaker is a free program that can remind youwhen it’s time to step away. You can look into special accessorieslike vertical mice, keyboards and computer glasses that can helpcounter bad health effects, as well. Programs like f.lux can adjustyour monitor tint and brightness to reduce eye strain.Turn your smartphone into an alarm clockQ. I just bought a new smartphone and I wanted to use myold smartphone as an alarm clock. Can you help?A. This is actually a piece of cake. And it’s a good idea becausea disconnected phone won’t bug you with texts and callsall through the night. Grab a charging dock that works with yourphone. Then, in the phone’s settings, make the lock-screen clockas big and bold as possible. Next, choose whether to use yourphone’s default alarm app or a third-party one. For iPhones, I likeiHome+Sleep. Android users can download Alarm Clock XtremeFree. Both of these have advanced wake features to help you havea more restful sleep. Finally, set an alarm of your choice or use oneof your phone’s ringtones.Set up Google two-step verificationQ. I’ve been told to set up two-step verification on Google tomake my account safer. How do I do it?A. That’s a good call. Two-step verification is a great way tokeep hackers and snoops at bay. Log in to your Google accountand go to Settings>>Security. You will see the “2-step Verification”setting. Turn it on and add your phone number. Google willsend you a verification code via phone call, text or its app everytime you log in from a new computer. To authorize new mobilegadgets, you have to use a different code. You can generate thatby going to the “Authorizing applications and sites” section ofthe Security menu. Enter a name for your gadget or app and click“generate password.” You should only have to input the code onceper gadget or app.Q. I tried to watch a video on Facebook, but it didn’t work.It made me install a new driver and then still didn’t play thevideo. What gives?A. I doubt that was a real video at all. This is a scam that iscommon on Facebook. The post looks like a really interesting orscandalous video. When you click it, it asks you to install a driverto watch it. What you actually download is usually a junk file or virus. When you try to install the “driver,” you share the scam videoKrum Tennis AcademyMonday, Tuesday, ThursdayJune 17 th through August 1 st7:30 PM – 9:30 PMFor incoming 7 th graders through 12 th gradersAthletes Will Do Drills, Play Matches, and Condition. When you see a videoon Facebook, do a search for the video on YouTube or Google. Ifyou can’t find the video, it’s probably a scam. You also can see ifthe scam has been reported on sites like Facecrooks and Snopes.Q. I have a virus that my regular anti-virus software can’tremove. How can I get rid of it?A. To start, make sure your anti-virus software is up todate. Without regular updates, your anti-virus can miss the latestthreats. Now, start your computer in Safe Mode. You can do thisby pressing and holding F8 during startup. Run the scan again tosee if the program catches the virus. If it doesn’t, try a scan withanother program, like MalwareBytes. If that doesn’t work, youmight have to use a last-ditch virus remover like AVG’s RescueCD. If none of these solutions work, you will need to wipe thehard drive and reinstall Windows.Q. I’m taking a trip to Europe, and I’d like to bring alongmy smartphone. How do I know if it will work overseas?A. Europe typically uses GSM-based cellular networks. Inthe past, AT&T and T-Mobile were the only major carriers withGSM networks, so if you used Verizon or Sprint, which hadCDMA networks, you were out of luck. Now, all four of the bigU.S. carriers have “world” or “international” phones that workon both network styles. Talk to your carrier to find out if yourphone is an international phone. Your carrier might even offerdiscounted international rates that save some of the pain of internationalroaming. If not, KeepGo can rent you a phone designedto work in your destination. If you want to save money, use appslike Skype or Viber over Wi-Fi for cheap or free international calls.Q. I just bought a new PC, and it’s already loaded withprograms I don’t want. Is there an easy way to remove them?A. It’s unfortunate that manufacturers preload PCs with trialprograms you don’t want. This “bloatware” slows down your systemfrom the get-go. You could remove it using Windows’ built-inuninstaller, but a better solution is a program like PC Decrapifier. It can search your system and identify common bloatware, whichmakes it easier to remove. Just be sure you don’t remove any programsyou want.Q. My old VHS home video tapes are starting to fade. Howcan I preserve them?A. Even with good storage practices, VHS tapes aren’t goingto last forever, especially if you play them often. It’s a good idea toconvert them to digital files, which won’t fade. You can find VHSconverters online that hook your VCR to your computer to makedigital copies. You can store the movie files on your computer, uploadthem to YouTube or turn them into DVDs. All you need aresome blank DVDs, a DVD-RW drive (most computers have these)and a DVD authoring program like DVD Flick. For safety, it’s agood idea to store the video files in multiple places.KRUM NEWS940-458-8515Email: krum@lemonspublications.comKRUM BOBCATSSUMMER BASEBALL CLINICJune 17-20, 2013Ages 7-129 a.m.-NoonAges 13-151-4 p.mCost - $60 includes Krum Baseball T-Shirt(each additional family member is $50)Players will receive 12 hours of instruction in baseball fundamentals. How do I protect my privacy on Google?A. Do you know every Google search you’ve ever performedis stored on the search giant’s servers? And that data is crosslinkedto your search data from YouTube, Google Maps and anyother Google services you use. With that mountain of information, Google can tell a lotabout you: where you live, your hobbies, age, health problems, religion and more.Of course, Google uses that data mostly to target you withads. If you spend 20 minutes doing research on a gadget, for thenext few weeks you’ll probably be hounded by ads for that gadgetwherever you go online.Because search sites and other Web services have become soingrained in our daily digital lives, it isn’t really an option to stopusing them. However, you can keep a lower profile and put a little moredistance between your personal data and Google. To start, youcan clear out your Google search history. To see what forgotten secrets lurk in your Google history, goto https://www.google.com/history and sign in with your Googleaccount information. You’ll see a list of everything you’ve eversearched for on Google. You can browse through your searches and find them by dayor Google service. Additionally, Google shows you personalizedsearch trends, which can be interesting to look at.To remove an unwanted search term, simply select click thecheckbox next to it and then click the Remove Items button. Youcan select as many entries as you want at a time.Once your information is removed, click the gear icon in theupper right corner of the page and choose Settings. Here you havethe option to turn off your Web history. This will stop Googlefrom recording anything else. There is a catch to all this, of course – your information isn’treally gone. Google will still keep your “deleted” information foraudits and other internal uses. However, it won’t use it for targetedads or to customize your search results. After your Web history has been disabled for 18 months, thecompany will partially anonymize the data so you won’t be associatedwith it.If you don’t have a Google account, or don’t usually sign into it, Google still tracks your history. To accomplish this, it uses acookie stored in your browser. You can wipe out the information by deleting the cookie, butGoogle will just start recording new information. Instead, you canopt out of interest-based ads altogether by going to http://www.google.com/settings/ads.Kim Komando hosts the nation’s largest talk radio show about consumerelectronics, computers and the Internet.
