Elks scholarships
available to all
The Benevolent and
Protective Order of Elks offer
many scholarships from
$500 to $50,000 for students
wishing to pursue a higher
education. Vocational
scholarships are also available
for students and adults
wishing to enroll in vocational
schools.
Most of them are obtained
by filing out a simple
application and writing a
short essay and submitting
them to a local Elks Lodge.
But would you believe
that many of the scholarships
are never awarded
because no one applies for
them?
The Elks National
Foundation Most Valuable
Student scholarship is the
most prestigious and also
awards the most amount
of money. Awards for that
application are $50,000
each to the top boy and
girl, $40,000 each to second
place, $30,000 each to
third place, 14 fourth place
awards of $20,000 each and
480 scholarships of $4,000
each. That’s a total of two
million, 440 thousand dollars
in much need financial
college aid provided by the
Elks.
Other ENF scholarships
available include Legacy
Scholarships for children
and grandchildren of Elks
and vocational scholarships
for anyone who opts to enroll
in a trade school rather
than a 4-year college. The
vocational scholarship has
no age limit.
Texas Elks State Association
also offers several
scholarships for students attending
an in-state college
based on need, scholastic
standing, school achievement
and community service.
One of the TESA
scholarships is only awarded
to students who are not
in the top 5% of their class
so everyone has a chance at
getting help with college expenses.
Now is the time for students
who will be seniors
this year to start thinking
about applying for college
and/or vocational scholarships.
If you wait until you
get caught up in the start of
school activities, sports and
studying, you may lose tract
of the various deadlines,
usually November thru January.
has brightened for many cities
and states — but some of
them are still facing potential
financial problems. As a citizen,
you may well have concerns
about these issues. And
as an investor, these financial
woes may affect your thinking
about one particular type
of investment vehicle: municipal
bonds.
Specifically, given the
difficulties faced by a few
municipalities, should you
consider adding “munis” to
the fixed-income portion of
your portfolio?
It is true that municipal
defaults, though still rare, rose
in 2012. But we haven’t experienced
any sharp increases
in defaults in 2013. Overall,
default rates for municipal
bonds are low — much lower
than for corporate bonds of
comparable quality, according
to Moody’s Investor Services.
Of course, there are no
guarantees, but if you stick
with “investment-grade” municipal
bonds — those that receive
the highest grades from
independent rating agencies
— you can reduce the
chances of being victimized
by a default. And municipal
bonds offer these benefits:
• Tax advantages — Municipal
bond interest payments
are free from federal
taxes, and possibly state and
local taxes, too. (However,
some munis are subject to the
alternative minimum tax, as
well as state and local taxes.)
This tax treatment means you
would have to earn a much
higher yield on other types of
bonds to match the “taxable
equivalent yield” of municipal
bonds.
• Civic benefits — By
adding quality municipal
bonds to your portfolio, you
can help support worthwhile
projects in your community,
such as construction of
schools and hospitals.
• Steady income — Barring
a default, you will receive
a regular, predictable income
stream for as long as you
own your municipal bonds.
However, if you currently
own many long-term munis,
you may want to consider reducing
your overall position.
Eventually, rising interest
rates will push down bond
prices, and long-term bonds
carry added risk because their
prices will decline more as interest
rates rise. Work with
your financial advisor to determine
the most appropriate
approach for your situation.
• Diversification — Municipal
bonds can help you diversify
the fixed-income portion
of your portfolio if it’s
heavily weighted toward corporate
bonds. And you can
even diversify your municipal
bond holdings by building a
“ladder” consisting of munis
of varying maturities. Once
you’ve built such a ladder,
you can gain benefits in all
interest-rate environments —
when rates are low, you’ll still
have your longer-term bonds
working for you (longer-term
bonds generally pay higher
rates than shorter-term ones),
and when interest rates rise,
you can reinvest the proceeds
of your shorter-term bonds at
the higher rates.
Consult with your financial
advisor to determine
if municipal bonds can be
an appropriate addition to
your portfolio, as investing in
bonds involves risks, including
credit risk and market
risk.
SANGER ISD CHILD NUTRITION DEPARTMENT
2013-2014 MEAL APPLICATION
Dear Parent/Guardian:
Children need healthy meals to learn. Sanger ISD offers healthy meals every school day. Breakfast costs $1.50 at every campus; lunch
costs $2.45 at CTE, CCI and BES and $2.75 at SGC, SMS and SHS .Your children may qualify for free meals or for reduced-price meals.
An application is attached. The following questions and answers will provide information about the Free and Reduced-Price Meal
Program.
1. Do I need to fill out an application for each child?
No. Complete one Free and Reduced-Price School Meals Application to
apply for free or reduced-price meals for all children in the
household. We cannot approve an incomplete application, so be
sure to fill out all required information. Return the completed
application to the Cafeteria Manager at your child’s campus.
2. Who can get free meals?
• Income—Your children can get free or reduced-price meals if
your household’s gross income (total, without deductions) is
within the limits described on the Federal Income Eligibility
Guidelines.
• Special Program Participants—All children in households
receiving benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance
Program (SNAP), Food Distribution Program on Indian
Reservations (FDPIR), or Temporary Assistance for Needy
Families (TANF), can get free meals regardless of income.
Children who attend Head Start, Early Head Start, and Even
Start are also eligible for free meals.
• Foster—Foster children under the legal responsibility of a
foster care agency or court are eligible for free meals. A foster
child is eligible for free meals regardless of the income of his
or her resident household.
• Homeless, Runaway, and Migrant—Children who meet the
definition of homeless, runaway, or migrant qualify for free
meals. If you haven’t been told about a child’s status as
homeless, runaway, or migrant, please call Valerie Foster at
940-458-4859.
3. Should I fill out an application if I received a letter this
school year saying my children are approved for free meals?
Carefully read the letter you received and follow the instructions.
Call your child’s school cafeteria if you have questions.
4. My child’s application was approved last year. Do I need to
fill out another one?
Yes. Your child’s application is only good for one school year and
the first few days of this school year. You must send in a new
application unless the school told you that your child is eligible for
5. I get WIC, can my child(ren) get free meals?
Children in households participating in WIC may be eligible for
free or reduced-price meals; please fill out an application.
If you have other questions or need help, call Paige Hachmeister, 940-458-7438.
Si necesita ayuda, por favor llame al teléfono Paige Hachmeister, 940-458-7438.
6. What if my income is not always the same?
List the amount that you normally receive. Even if you missed
some work in the last month, put down your usual pay. If you
normally get overtime pay, include it. If you have lost a job or
had your hours or wages reduced, use your current income.
7. We are in the military.
Do we include our housing allowance as income?
If you get an off‐base housing allowance, it must be included
as income. If your housing is part of the Military Housing
Privatization Initiative, do not include your housing allowance
as income.
Is combat pay counted as income?
No, if combat pay is received because of deployment in
addition to basic pay and was not received before
deployment, combat pay is not counted as income.
8. May I apply if someone in my household is not a U.S.
citizen?
Yes. You or your child(ren) do not have to be U.S. citizens to
qualify for free or reduced-price meals.
9. Will the information I give be checked?
Yes, and we may also ask you to send written proof.
10. If I don’t qualify now, may I apply later?
Yes. You may apply at any time during the school year. If
your household income or circumstances change, you may
become eligible for free or reduced-price meals.
11. Who should I include as members of my household?
You must include yourself as well as others living with you who
share income and expenses—related to you or not
(grandparents, other relatives, or friends. Do not include others
who live with you who are economically independent—that is
anyone you do not support, does not share income with you,
and does pay a pro‐rated share of expenses.
12. What if I disagree with the school’s decision about my
application?
You should talk to school officials. You also may ask for a
hearing by calling or writing to Eric Beam, 601 Elm Street,
Sanger, TX 76266, 940-458-7438.
13. My family needs more help. Are there other programs we
might apply for?
To find out how to apply for other assistance benefits, contact
Steven Waide’s
daughter deathly
Stephen Waide is currently
serving a 1 year tour in South
Korea while the family had to
stay in Tucson, AZ.
plane to land.”
After further testing
they found out her levels for
peanuts were off the charts
and could not be measured
they were so high. They
also found out she is allergic
to tree nuts. Over the years
she has missed out on so
many things because of the
unknowns of traces of nuts
possibly being present and
them not knowing. She has
also developed non-anaphylactic
allergies to strawberries
and soy throughout the
years.
Now the family has
been busy raising $20,000
for an Allergy Alert dog
named Tasha. They are over
halfway to their goal.
Tasha is an Allergy
Alert dog being trained
for Chyler by Angel Ser-
Stephen Waide is a
1997 graduate of SHS. He
is currently in the United
States Air Force, stationed
in Korea. His wife Liz and
children Chyler (turns 10 on
August 15th), Logan (will be
6 on August 30th) and Jackson
(turns 2 on August 16th)
are at home in Arizona.
Stephen has been in
the Air Force for 16 years,
and he is a Tech Sergeant.
His parents, Joe and Nancy
Waide still live in Sanger
along with his brother Justin
Waide. His grandfather
Jack Waide also lives in
Sanger along with quite a
few aunts, uncles, and cousins.
“We have been married
for 11 years. I grew up in
Scottsdale, AZ and met Stephen
when he was stationed
at Luke AFB in Arizona 15
years ago,” said Liz.
Chyler was diagnosed
with peanut and tree nut
allergies when she was 18
months old. She had never
had any kind of nuts before,
and while on an airplane
flying home from visiting
family she had a severe reaction.
“It was just Chyler
and I flying back to Florida
where we were stationed at
the time from a visit with
my mom in Scottsdale,” said
Liz.
“The only thing they
