Wilson thanks voters
City of Krum mayor Terri Wilson, who won re-election
on May 11 by defeating former mayor Larry Lamonica
by a vote of 59-percent to 41-percent, said this
week that she is grateful to Krum voters.
“I’m glad I have the opportunity to continue to work
for the citizens of the City of Krum and look forward
to being a part of the continued progress in Krum,” she
said. “I’m excited the voters passed four of the five issues
placed before them.”
Voters approved $500,000 in bonds for street improvements,
as well as $1.3 million in bonds for a new
Krum Public Library. The only issue to fail – 177 to 175
votes – was for $2.8 in bonds to build a new fire station
for the Krum Fire Department, which would also have
housed the Public Works Department.
“Moving forward the council and I will be listening
to the citizens to have a better understanding of why Special
Election 2 Proposition 1 [for the fire station] failed
and how the citizens would like us to move forward,”
Wilson said.
KISD presents budget work
By John Callarman
Preliminary work on
the budget for the 2013-14
school year, a look at the first
round of state test scores for
fifth- and eighth-graders, a
decision to seek new bids on
the combined tennis court/
Bobcat Boulevard relocation
project, and the hiring
of seven new teachers and
an assistant superintendent
occupied the Krum Independent
School District
Board of Trustees at its May
8 monthly meeting.
Budget — Superintendent
Cody Carroll submitted
a tentative budget that
showed $22,516,408 in total
expenditures, up $1,526,490
from the current year’s
$20,989,918 figure. Increased
state revenue based
on a rise in average daily attendance
enrollment figures
and flow from the fund balance
will offset a decrease in
local revenue and the apparent
lack of federal funding,
figures supplied by Carroll
showed.
The total assessed valuation
for properties in the
district, on which the twopart
local property tax rate
is based, is $659,370,333.
The ADA figure in the district
has risen to 1,890 students.
In the four funds covered
by the budget, the
General Fund expenditures
rise from $16,864,124 to
$18,195,408; the Food Service
Budget (for which federal
funds are included) rises
from $751,108 to $790,493;
the Employee Day Care,
After School Program and
Summer Fund Program expenses
rise from $213,932
to $336,176; and the Debt
Service Budget goes up from
$3,160,754 to $3,194,331.
The Operation and
Maintenance tax rate tentatively
will remain at $1.04,
but the Interest and Sinking
Fund rate is recommended
to return to the $.50 level.
He said his recommendation
for the rate to cover
the district’s Debt Service
Fund is based on “an effort
to try to pay off some of
our bonds a little early to
make some room for what
we know is coming down
the road. Probably in June,
maybe in July, I’m going to
have a representative come
in and talk about the procedure
in doing that and some
other options that will be
out there if we need to go
down that road. There will
Fire Station bond may go to voters again this fall
By John Callarman
Residents of Krum will
get another chance, possibly
as early as November,
to vote on a bond issue to
finance a new fire station,
following a discussion Monday
night by the Krum City
Council about the results of
the May 11 election.
Voters OK’d bonds to
finance a new library and
for street construction but
rejected, 177-175, the bond
issue to build a new fire station
and public works facilities.
“If we just give up at
one,” Councilmember Michael
Wilkes summed up the
council’s attitude, “I mean,
there’d be so many things
in this world that wouldn’t
happen if everybody gave
up the first time.”
More than 2,000 of the
2,424 registered voters eligible
to vote in the city stayed
home on May 11 and the
preceding early voting days,
leaving it to a little more
than 350 voters to decide
the mayor’s race, the fate of
the bond issues and the two
sales tax items on the ballot.
Financial consultant
Marti Chew of FirstSouthwest,
the city’s financial advisor,
outlined a four-month
schedule of actions leading
to the city’s obtaining, on
Sept. 18, the $1.3-million
voters authorized for library
construction and the
$500,000 voters OK’d for
street improvements. She
also listed three alternatives
for the $2.8 million for construction
of a fire station
and relocation of the public
works department — another
bond issue election, the
issuance of certificates of
obligation, or the issuance
of tax notes.
“I’d really like to go
back to the voters,” Wilkes
launched the council’s
20-minute discussion of its
options for the fire station.
“I think that’s the right thing
to do.”
“And I do, too,” Mayor
Terri Wilson responded. “I
think, honestly, we need to
find out why it failed. We
need to be asking, ‘Why
didn’t you vote for it?’”
“The feedback I got was
that it’s on the wrong side of
the tracks,” Councilmember
Paul Meine said. “It wasn’t
on the side where they
lived.”
Wilkes suggested a lot
of “negative P.R.” distributed
right before the election,
hurt.
“I think, knowing that,
now we can be prepared to
come back at that with the
right advertising so everybody
can have the correct information
and not wrong information,”
he said. “From
some of the people I talked
to, there was a lot of wrong
information out there right
at the last minute.”
Fire Chief Kenneth
Swindle spoke of the research
that went into the site
selection process, including
the lack of available, affordable
land on the eastside of
the BNSF tracks and the location
of the designated station
site on the property that
formerly housed the Denton
County Barn, in the middle
of the city’s extraterritorial
jurisdiction with immediate
access to FM156.
“There needs to be a
major education for some
of the people out there that
don’t understand what the
cost is going to be for now
and the future,” Swindle
told the council. “When we
put this project together, everything
we did to put the
project as a positive for the
city for now and for 50 years
from now, where the project
that would allow you to
have a fire station for now,
for the city proper, and the
ETJ that would be effective
for the future.”
He also was concerned
about people who believed
the city could establish fire
stations on both sides of the
tracks.
“At no time did anybody
ask me what it was
going to cost to have two
fire stations in the city of
Krum,” Swindle said. ”It’s
going to cost you $900,000
to man each of those fire
stations. My budget presently
is $830,000. I know
what my revenue is; I know
what my projected revenue
is. I know where I’m
at three years, five years, 10
years and 15 years from that
point. I can tell you exactly
where we are and where
we’re projected to be. In no
way can we afford two fire
stations in the city of Krum,
Texas.”
“We can’t afford
two,” Wilson agreed. “We
couldn’t afford to staff two,
and we couldn’t afford
equipment for two.”
Councilmember Christine
Rodriguez said the city
needs to include the comparative
cost of operating
two stations in its future voter
education efforts.
“Let them know that
they can’t afford two and
we’ve done our homework,
we’ve done our research,
and this is the best location,”
Rodriguez said. ”We’re giving
you the best that we can
to provide the services that
you need.”
Another factor nobody
asked Swindle about leading
up to the election was the effect
of the railroad tracks on
the response time to any fire
that might break out on the
east side of town.
“I have three calls that I
pulled – nobody asked me –
but I have three calls that I
pulled randomly to see what
our time was to three areas
that were almost to Masch
Branch,” Swindle said.
“Three minutes, three minutes
15 seconds and three
minutes 45 seconds. NFPA
(National Fire Protection
Association) states that if
KING’S KING’S KING’S KING’S KING’S KING’s KING’s
By John Callarman
Why did you
note vote
in the city
election?
The Krumudgeon does
not want to know how
many registered voters were
eligible to vote in the Krum
municipal election on Saturday.
To know the specific
number of people who
chose to ignore the election
would add to the sense of
depression this sharer of information
on local government
issues feels that what
he’s been writing for the past
decade has fallen on blind
eyes or closed minds.
Given the number of
voters who cast ballots in
past city elections, I suppose
it shouldn’t have been a
surprise that only a handful
more than 350 voters turned
out in either the several days
of early voting or on election
day itself.
Six weeks ago, I asked
on this page “Who cares?”
The answer, solidified
when the polls closed at 7
p.m. Saturday, May 11, was
a little more than 350 peo-
HEART TO HEART
By Bro. Ed Gatlin,
RELATIONSHIPS
This week my wife and
I experienced the death of
two friends, a wedding of a
family member and a family
reunion. Each of these represented
the things that are
precious to me, Faith, Family
and Friends. These three
words speak of relationships
that are foundational for a
healthy balanced life.
FAITH speaks of a
personal relationship with
God through His Son Jesus.
Without that relationship
ple.
Where were the rest of
you?
In the dozen city elections
which have occurred
since the Krumudgeon
made Krum his home, the
largest turnout came in
2007 when a mere 530 voters
went to the polls in the
first of three mayoral races
between Terri Wilson and
Larry Lamonica. Perhaps
the 71 percent vote Wilson
garnered in 2007 and the
69 percent she won in 2009
convinced 180 voters in that
election six years ago that
Wilson was a shoo-in so
there was no need to vote.
Why, though, did not
the potential 9-cent per $100
valuation tax increase to pay
for the bond issues on the
ballot generate interest?
It has amazed the Krumudgeon,
whose e-mail address
has been appended to
this column for more than 10
years now and whose name
and telephone number are
in the phone book, that feedback
from Krum residents
to the subjects that have
been covered on the pages
of the Krum News and the
Krum Star before it has been
virtually nil. Of my face-toface
contacts, it seems more
people who live outside the
city limits were interested in
the election than those who
actually were eligible to vote
by residence.
I ask again:
Why did you not vote in
the city election?
Did you not care if your
taxes go up?
Did it make no difference
to you that streets are
deteriorating?
Did you not care whether
Krum had a library building
large enough to house
all of the activities that such
a building is expected to
handle?
Are you satisfied that
the Fire Department is adequately
housed in the facility
that was barely large enough
for a volunteer group with
a couple of small pieces of
motorized equipment more
than a decade ago?
Do you believe that
your vote would have made
no difference?
Just three more yes
votes … three more …
would have enabled the city
to build a new, modern fire
station.
There were only 175
people who cared enough
to support the Krum Fire
Department by casting a yes
ballot on the issue. There
were another 177 people
who, for whatever combinations
of reasons, whether it
be cost, location, or the right
time, voted against the bond
issue that also included
money for the Public Works
facility and the dough to pay
for the property the City
Council has obligated us to
buy.
Why did you not vote in
the city election?
Send the Krumudgeon
an e-mail telling me why
you didn’t care enough to
vote. Tell me you are satisfied
with the city as it exists
today and you have faith that
whoever is in charge will do
everything that needs to be
done to provide all those
city services that you take
for granted.
I am ashamed to think
that I could be surrounded
by as many as 2,000 people
eligible to vote but didn’t
care enough to exercise
that privilege our founding
fathers ground out in the
greatest compromise document
ever written, the United
States Constitution.
I am abashed to consider
that the right to vote that
our servicemen and women
gave up their lives to protect
didn’t mean enough to you
to take five minutes out of
your life to go to the KISD
administration building to
cast your ballot.
I am chagrined when I
think of the numbers of people
in Krum who are going
to grumble about how they
imagine they are being treated
by the people a small percentage
of us have chosen to
wield the authority and responsibility
for making the
decisions that preserve and
protect our rights as citizens
of Krum, Texas.
Let it be understood
that the Krumudgeon is not
complaining about the outcome
of the election. The
outcome is not for the Krumudgeon
alone to decide.
It’s the responsibility of
all the eligible voters in the
community to make their
decisions.
Perhaps the vast majority
of Krum’s voters, the
ones who stayed at home
throughout the voting time,
might have been surprised
that, for the third municipal
election in a row, there
were no contested races for
the city council positions.
Perhaps the vast majority
of Krum’s voters considered
that a 9-cent increase
in taxes wasn’t that much
of a problem, so they were
willing to let the few who
cared enough to cast their
ballots make the important
decisions.
Perhaps the vast majority
of Krum’s voters are satisfied
that the incumbents
have proven themselves worthy
of their continued trust
and are willing to accept
whatever they may decide in
the next few years. Apparently,
no one single soul in
Krum was worried enough
about the worthiness of the
we are like human pinballs.
We go as fast as we can in
one direction until we meet
resistance, then we bounce
off and go as fast as we can
until we meet another obstacle.
God made us in order to
have a relationship with us.
FAMILY speaks of a
special person or group of
people that you experience
life with. They are the ones
you suffer with and rejoice
with. They are the source
of blessings and challenges.
They are the ones that we
too often take for granted.
FRIENDS add flavor to
life. The Bible says, “in order
to have a friend we must
show ourselves to be friendly.”
The best way to find a
friend is to be a friend. There
is someone who needs your
friendship. Befriend them,
and you both win.
Anything of lasting value
will fall into one of these
relationships. For that reason,
each of us should do all
we can to cultivate them.
council candidates these
past three years to think that
a contested race might be a
good thing.
Too bad our state legislature
and our national Congress
are not so trustworthy.
But wait, it’s not OUR incumbent
senators and representatives
that have proven
untrustworthy … it’s those
from all the other districts
in the state and nation. Send
them all home … but we get
to keep OURS.
The list of city projects
for which grant money has
been obtained from state
and federal sources, not to
mention from private enterprise,
is impressive. When
those projects are completed,
Krum’s necessities and
amenities will be positively
enhanced.
Some of us have shown
that we’re willing to tax ourselves
to pay for more necessities
and amenities.
The generosity of the
232 voters who marked ballots
saying they are willing
to pay more for street im-
provements, the 183 voters
who pledged their contribution
for the construction of
a new library, and the 175
who were willing to help
pay for a new fire station
and public works facility is
commendable.
Thank you, too – to the
119 who voted on the street
improvement issue, the 166
who voted no on the library,
and the 177 who felt the current
fire station and public
works facilities are adequate
– you lived up to your responsibilities
as an American
voter.
The 350 plus who cast
their ballots this spring answered
the question “Who
cares?” with a resounding,
“I do.”
To the many hundreds
and hundreds more whose
answer was “Not I,” will
anyone tell me why did you
not vote in the city election?
A PASTOR’S THOUGHTS
By The Rev.
Dr. Christy Thomas,
Krum United
Methodist Church
WHERE WAS GOD THEN?
In a recent news article
about the role faith and
churches are playing in the
aftermath of the deadly tornadoes
in Granbury, one resident
stated that his last-minute
decision to take his wife
and children to church that
night saved their lives, as
their home was destroyed 30
minutes later. He said, “That
proves right there that going
to church can literally save
your life.”
He also mentioned that
because of all the gifts of
cash, clothes and food that
he found renewed faith in
friends, family and God,
very sure that he was under
God’s protecting hand.
Now I read this on Sunday,
and even then asked,
“how about those who were
killed? Were they left out
somehow of this miracle of
protection?”
And then, Moore, Oklahoma,
happened. Late
Monday afternoon, I noticed
a bunch of Facebook
friends had posted concerns
about something happening
near Oklahoma City.
I found a live news
source and sat there, horrified.
Schools with children
still in them were totally
destroyed. Entire neighborhoods
wiped out. As I
watched, the first deaths
were confirmed—a mother
and her seven-monthold
baby crushed under
the weight of her collapsed
house.
I wept.
By Tuesday morning,
the death toll was 24 with
hundreds more injured. Too
many people, including children,
yet unaccounted for.
The work of surveying and
estimating damage to hundreds
of homes and businesses
will take a far back
burner as those trained first
responders keep up a frantic
search for survivors.
Powerful stories of those
whose lives were spared are
leaking out. I would guess
that many, just like the
Granbury tornado survivor
above, will affirm confidently,
“God protected me.”
I say, “Let’s just stop
saying that. Please.”
Yes, there will be miracles
both of excellent preparation
and simple good luck.
There are the wise ones who
had access to storm shelters
and huddled there, listening
to their houses collapse
around them. I’ve read one
wonderful story of a preschool
who gathered all
their students in an interior
bathroom, covered them,
waited out the storm, and
emerged with all unharmed
but with the structure totally
destroyed.
I say, “Thanks be to
God!” for that.
But some have died,
many seriously injured.
Perhaps some were foolish,
hearing warnings and not
believing them. Perhaps
some found such fascination
by the approaching storm
that they went out to watch
it, not knowing that flying
debris turns normally innocuous
objects into lethal
weapons. And perhaps some
were in an old, structurally
unsound school-building
and took the best safety measures
available.
Where was God then?
Why were they not protected?
That question will be
asked by both people of
faith and those who want to
make a mockery of people
of faith.
And as long as we insist
on using language like,
“Well, MY God would not
let that happen,” and therefore
making over God in our
own image and insisting that
the Holy One be our personal
care-taker, we’re going to
be stuck here, unprepared to
deal with tragedy, death and
loss.
Where was God? Well,
right now, God is present in
the hands and feet of those
who are looking for survivors,
tending the wounded,
binding up the broken-hearted,
providing food, clothing
and shelter to the devastated.
Where was God when
the tornadoes hit or the fertilizer
plant blew up or the
brothers in Boston decided
to see how many innocent
they could injure by their
hard and evil hearts?
Fully present. Accompanying
people through
the valley of the shadow of
death. Before them and behind
them in both terror and
hope. Calling on the rest of
us to stay the course, steady
our souls, offer help where
possible and acknowledge
the impermanence of this
life and human structures.
The Scriptures remind
us that we are like grass,
here today and burned in the
fire tomorrow. Let us make
each “here today” holy and
beautiful.

At left – Members of the Krum City Council, as well
as staff members, meet with Ponder Fire Chief Charlie
Williams and Assistant Chief Andrew Economedes after
touring Ponder’s new fire station.
Fire
Station
bond
(Continued from pg. 1)
we can be under four minutes,
we’re doing an excellent
job. We go to any fire
station in the United States
and tell I’ve got four minutes
response time to your
location, they’re asking me,
‘How can you do that?’ We
have that now.”
Elaine Herzog, whose
home east of the BNSF
tracks was damaged by fire
a couple of years ago, told
the council, “I have heard
the same things that Councilmember
Meine has heard
about the wrong side of the
tracks, but I also think that
there’s some misinformation
floating around that
there are facilities and buildings
available that the city
already owns on the other
side.”
“What I have heard
primarily,” Meine responded
is, “‘If there’s a train
goes by on the track, how
soon would they get to my
house?’”
Swindle said he was
ready all along to answer
that question.
“The longest train that
went through that we saw
was two minutes,” he said.
“I want back and I pulled all
the records. The guys had
been held up 30 to 45 seconds,
tops. I know there’s 25
trains that travel through the
city. I never got asked any of
those questions.
“How come, in six years
I’ve been here, I’ve never
been held up on a call?”
Herzog referred to mutual
aid agreements, under
which surrounding fire departments
send men and
equipment to fight fires in
each others’ jurisdictions.
“Denton and Ponder
did show up for our house
fire,” Herzog said.
Prior to the special
council meeting, city officials
and three councilmembers
visited the Ponder Fire
Department to look at the
new fire station, constructed
during the past year by the
Ponder Volunteer Fire Department.
Ponder Fire Chief Charlie
Williams and Assistant
Chief Andrew Economedes
led the visitors through a
tour of the new facility,
Staff members of the City of Krum, as well as City Council members, take a tour of the
new Ponder Fire Station.
Krum councilmembers Joe Beall, left, and Michael Wilkes, center, are sworn into office
by County Commissioner Andy Eads on Monday night. Beall and Wilkes were unopposed
in the May 11 election.
which cost about $700,000
to build. Williams emphasized
that because the Ponder
department is all volunteer,
a 501(c)3 non-profit
organization not connected
with the city, they were not
bound to meet all engineering
requirements for municipal
construction, were able
to be their own contractor,
and were helped by volunteer
labor and sizable materials
cost knock-offs.
He estimated it would
cost the city of Krum between
$1.2 million and $1.5
million to duplicate the
building in Krum.
The Ponder station
serves a city of 1,400 population
and a county area
with 7,000 residents in 68
square miles with fire protection.
Ponder contracts
with Krum for ambulance
service within their jurisdiction.
Williams assured
Krum councilmembers Ponder
was completely satisfied
with the ambulance service
provided by Krum.
“We have absolutely
no problem,” referring to
himself and Economedes,
"with ambulance service we
get from up there. We both
want to be retired before we
see an ambulance in this facility.”
City of Krum Mayor Terri Wilson, left, is sworn into
office by County Commissioner Andy Eads at Monday
night’s City Council meeting.
The Krum Bobcats varsity baseball team – left to right – front row – Riley Marshall, Colten Knierim, Mason Lucas, Michael Tanttari, Brennan Ellis, Josh Reeves, Brendan Styles,
Bobcats fall in Regional Quarter-Finals heartbreaker
The Krum Bobcats saw
their season come to a close
in the Regional Quarter-Finals
with a heartbreaking
loss to Princeton in nine
innings. Krum trailed 5-0
in the deciding game before
rallying to force extra
innings. The Bobcats finish
the year at 25-7. Eight seniors
played their final game
for the Bobcats. Josh Reeves,
Trey Johnson, Jack Patton,
Brendan Styles, Zack
Hughes, Justin Graham, Ty
Damron, and Nathan Silva
are graduating players for
the Bobcats.
“Our kids didn’t quit.
We kept battling,” said
Coach Ray Miller. “We just
couldn’t get any offense going
in Game 2. Jack Patton
and Justin Graham pitched
well in relief and gave us a
chance to stay in the game.
We had a chance to win it
in the bottom of the 7th, but
their third baseman made a
game saving play.”
“Overall it was a great
season and I’m very proud
of our kids. We have a lot
to replace next year but we
have some good young kids
eager to fill those spots.”
Game 1
Ty Damron tossed a
shutout to carry the Bobcats
to a 4-0 victory over Princeton
at Denton High School
Friday night in Game 1 of a
best of three series.
Krum got the win
thanks in large part to Damron’s
dominant, 15-strikeout
performance. The Bobcats’
pitcher gave up just one hit
over seven shutout innings.
Josh Reeves provided
the biggest blow at the
plate, racking up three RBIs
on one hit for Bobcats. He
homered in the fourth inning.
Krum had six hits in
the contest. Justin Graham,
Jack Patton, Zack Hughes,
and Ty Damron also had
hits.
Krum stayed on top until
the final out after taking
the lead in the fourth.
Game 2
Brendan Styles did all
he could to give the Bobcats
a boost, but it wasn’t enough
to get past Princeton, as
Krum lost 5-0 in Game 2.
Styles paced the Bobcats
at the plate, going 2-4.
He singled in the fifth and
seventh innings.
Carlos Contreras got
the win for Princeton. He
tossed seven innings of
shutout ball. Contreras
struck out eight, walked two
and gave up five hits. Josh
Reeves was tagged with the
loss. Jack Patton came in to
pitch four scoreless innings
in relief, but Krum couldn’t
get the bats going.
Princeton was sparked
by Marcos Molina and Riley
Lowrance, who teamed
up for four hits and two
RBIs.
Princeton didn’t relinquish
the lead after scoring
three runs in the second
inning when it scored on a
solo home run by Lowrance
and a two-run single by
Trevor Williams.
Princeton pushed across
one run in both the third inning
and the fourth.
Game 3
A tight game was decided
in the ninth inning as
Krum fell to Princeton 7-5
on Saturday at Denton High
School.
Krum’s Zack Hughes
was perfect at the dish, going
4-4. He singled in the
second, fourth, and sixth
innings and doubled in the
seventh inning. His double
in the seventh tied the game
up. Krum had battled back
from a 5-0 deficit. With the
game tied and one out, Colten
Lucas hit a sinking liner
that was snagged by Princeton
3B Riley Lawrence
and Lawrence doubled up
Hughes.
After pitching a complete
game earlier, Carlos
Contreras got the win in
relief for Princeton. Contreras
pitched 3 innings and
allowed no runs. Contreras
also had the game winning
RBI.
Princeton’s Marcos Molina,
Contreras and Logan
Teel combined for eight hits
and six RBIs.
In the top of the first,
Princeton grabbed the early
lead, 2-0. Gunner Starr
started the rally for Princeton
with a single. Princeton
pushed more runs across
when Starr scored on an
RBI single by Contreras.
Princeton matched its
two-run second inning with
two more in the ninth. In the
second, Princeton scored on
a two-run home run by Molina
off Krum starter Colten
Lucas, bringing home Starr.
Justin Graham relieved Lucas
to start the third and
held Princeton to one run
until the ninth. He suffered
the loss.
It didn’t take long for
the Bobcats to respond as it
scored two runs of its own
in the fifth. The Bobcats
scored on a two-run single
by Graham. Krum had 12
hits in the game and Princeton
had 11. Trey Johnson
and Colten Lucas had 2 hits
each.
COACH MILLER
REACHES 1100
VICTORY MARK
AS BOBCATS
SWEEP
FERRIS FOR
AREA CROWN
Krum swept a pair of
hard fought battles against
an upstart Ferris Yellowjacket
club to win the Area
round and advance to the
Regional Quarter-Finals.
Game 2 saw Ferris pick
up 3 runs in the sixth inning
to close the gap to
4-3, but starter Josh Reeves
regrouped and got the Yellowjackets
out three up,
three down in the seventh to
move the Bobcats on to the
next round, where they fell
against Princeton.
Game 2 was also Krum
Head Baseball Coach Ray
Miller’s 1100th career win.
Miller has coached 28 years
and 44 seasons. Several of
those seasons came in Oklahoma,
where the non-football
playing schools play
both a fall and spring schedule.
Game 1
Krum beat Ferris 4-1
in seven innings on Friday
at Plano John Paul behind
Colten Lucas, who went 2-2.
He doubled in the second
inning and singled in
the sixth inning.
Ty Damron’s eight
strikeouts helped the Bobcats
to the victory. Damron
allowed one earned run on
four hits and three walks
over seven innings.
The Bobcats never
trailed after scoring three
runs in the second on an error,
a passed ball, and a sacrifice
fly by Brendan Styles.
Damron and Justin Graham
had Krum’s only other hits.
The fifth inning saw
Ferris score its only run on
the day on an RBI single by
Abrian Gonzales. The Bobcats
survived Ferris’ surge
and put up one run of its
own in the fifth.
Game 2
Ferris wasn’t able to
come back in Game 2 of
the series from the big hole
it dug itself into against
the Bobcats, and lost 4-3 to
Krum after falling behind by
four runs in the third inning.
Ferris scored three runs
in the sixth on two singles,
but stranded the tying and
go ahead runs.
Zack Hughes racked up
three RBIs on two hits for
Bobcats. He tripled in the
first inning and doubled in
the third inning. Brendan
Styles led all hitters, going 3
for 4. Colten Lucas added a
pair of hits.
KISD presents
budget work
(Continued from pg. 1)
be a little bit extra generated
in that fund, that’ll be used
to pay off some bonds.”
The fund balance, leftover
revenue from the current
year’s budget, is up to
$985,812 from $725,653 this
year but about $700,000 is
already committed to construction
projects, Carroll
pointed out.
Test scores — Fifthand
Eighth-graders in the
Krum ISD scored considerably
higher on the first
round of the state-required
State of Texas Assessments
of Academic Readiness
reading and math tests, Carroll
reported.
Seventy-seven percent
of Fifth-grade students
statewide passed the STA-
AR reading test on the first
go-round; the figure was
90 percent in Krum. Seventy-five
percent statewide
passed fifth-grade math;
the figure was 87 percent in
Krum. At the eighth-grade
level, in reading it was 84
percent statewide, 92 percent
in Krum; and in eighthgrade
math, the statewide
figure was 77 percent both
statewide and in Krum,
but Carroll pointed out the
Krum figure would rise considerably
when advanced
math/Algebra I students’
scores are factored in.
Students who failed the
tests get two more opportunities
to pass, later this
month and in late June.
State retention law requires
students who fail
either test to be retained at
their current grade level.
higher than Carroll had anticipated,
he told the board.
He recommended that
that “we go back out for bid
and advertise it a little heavier,
seeing if we can’t draw
in more companies to put
in a little more competitive
bids.”
Trustee Eric Borchardt
asked if it might be better to
separate the two projects.
“That’s partly a sign
of the Metroplex economy
that’s hot right now,”
Borchardt said.
Carroll said he would
seek the advice of the engineers
on splitting the bid
package. He said seeking
new bids would delay the
projects three to four weeks,
but they still could be completed
by the start of the
new school year.
New personnel — Following
an executive session,
the district’s curriculum coordinator,
Nancy Shipley,
was chosen to succeed Carroll
as assistant superintendent
at a salary of $92,000.
New teachers hired
were Kristi Longley, high
school English; Valerie
Smith, high school Spanish;
Courtney Bobol, high
school theater arts; Claudia
Martinez, 5th-grade dual
languages; Thomas Warrick,
high school Spanish;
Chad Longley, high school
science and football and
track assistant coach; and
Brenda Brinkman, athletic
trainer.
