Widow, children of Sanger man killed in motorcycle
accident trying to pick up the pieces
collided with a pickup that
was traveling southbound.
Denton Police Department
officer Ryan Grelle reported
that the accident occurred
as the pickup was turning
left into the Denton Town
Center shopping center. The
accident remains under investigation.
“My husband was
headed home from work.
He usually took Mayhill but
chose to take the loop that
day. I think he was thinking
he might catch me getting
off work at 4:30. We would
Sanger News
have been at the same intersection
at about the same
time if the wreck had not
happened,” Misty said. “It
seems that the driver [of the
pickup] was in a hurry. I’d
like to mention that people
should be aware of motorcycles
on the road and give
them the same respect you
would your child, spouse,
or loved one. People should
watch for motorcycles as
they would any other vehicle.
Too many times people
have been killed because
someone was just in too big
a hurry and not paying adequate
attention.”
Misty was informed of
the fatal accident by two police
officers.
“My first hope was that
he was only injured, but
they asked me to sit down
and I knew it was bad.”
Misty and James had
been together for over 16
years. They first met in
January of 1997 when introduced
to each other by
Misty’s brother, Chad, at
O’Rileys Pool Hall in Denton,
which is now Rockin
Rodeo. Shortly after, on
February 2, 1997, James
asked Misty “to be his girl,”
she said, and they made
their marriage official on
February 2, 2008.
“My husband was a
great man. He was my
life’s partner, a loving father,
and a true friend to
many,” Misty said. “He was
straight-forward and truly
a one-of-a-kind who was
loved by many and will be
greatly missed.”
James was employed by
Reyes Group, while Misty
works for Sally Beauty Co.
in Denton. The couple have
two children, James Jr. and
Brittanie.
James leaves behind a
son and daughter - James
Jr., a sophomore and Brit,
a freshman. “Our lives have
been flipped upside down,”
Misty said. “My kids are
blessings and just so strong.
They are what hold my sanity
and keep me going and
striving to make it through
this nightmare. I carry the
bell off my husband’s bike –
which is a special thing for
a rider – so I can have him
with me. My children are
finding the strength to prepare
for school, but life will
never be the same for us.”
Misty remembers clearly
the day of the accident, as
her family woke up and began
their normal routine last
Monday, not knowing the
horrific turn of fate in store
for them just later that day.
“Every morning, I got
up and made his lunch. He
would go pull the bike out
and come back in. That
Monday, he said ‘Well babe,
gotta go.’ I said ‘Have a nice
day. I love you.’ He said ‘I
love you too’ and gave me a
walked out the door. Later
that afternoon, I also texted
him to ‘Have a good day’
and that I loved him. He replied
with the same and said
he loved me too.”
Misty said she’s grateful
for the outpouring of love
and assistance that she’s
received during this awful
time.
“I would like to thank
everyone for the outpouring
of support and kindness,”
Misty said. “People at both
of our jobs, our family,
and our friends have pulled
together and continually
checked in on us. A special
thanks to the bikers who
made the memorial a rolling
thunder as my husband
was truly smiling down that
day, to Gary for the perfect
service, and to the funeral
home for their hard work.
Words cannot express how
thankful and humbled we
are to have such great blessings
in our lives.”
“My husband was my
rock, my life’s partner, an
excellent father, and he was
loved by many. He was a
one-of-a-kind man that you
just don’t find every day.”
The staff in Misty’s office
at Sally Beauty Co. have created
a website for the family, in
which donations may be made
great husband and father. The
I define success as:
Finding a way to do what you
love and making a positive
difference in the lives of others.
The most important advice
I could give a teenager
would be: Figure out what
you enjoy doing (that is legal
and might lead to a career),
read a lot, and abide by the
golden rule.
The thing I like best
about our community is: The
Avoid ‘Cramming’
for College Savings
If you have children,
you’re keenly aware that
it’s getting close to backto-school
time. Today, that
might mean you need to
go shopping for notebooks
and pencils. But in the future,
when “back to school”
means “off to college,” your
expenditures are likely to be
significantly greater. Will
you be financially prepared
for that day?
It could be expensive.
The average cost for one
year at an in-state public
school is $22,261, while the
comparable expense for a
private school is $43,289,
according to the College
Board’s figures for the
2012–2013 academic year.
And these costs will probably
continue to rise.
Still, there’s no need to
panic. Your child could receive
grants or scholarships
to college, which would lower
the “sticker price.” But it’s
still a good idea for you to
save early and often.
To illustrate the importance
of getting an early
jump on college funding,
let’s look at two examples
of how you might fund a
college education. A 529
plan is one way — but not
the only way — to save for
college. (The following examples
are hypothetical in
nature and don’t reflect the
performance of an actual
investment or investment
strategy.)
• Example 1: Suppose
you started saving for your
child’s college education
when she was 3 years old.
If you contributed $200 a
month, for 15 years, to a
529 plan that earned 7%
a year, you’d accumulate
about $64,000 by the time
your daughter turned 18.
With a 529 plan, your earnings
grow tax free, provided
all withdrawals are used for
qualified higher education
purposes. (Keep in mind,
though, that 529 plan distri-
of the diurnal process as it daily affects our lives.
meeting, August 23, at the Carriage House Assisted
Living, 1357 Bernard.
College Savings
(Continued from pg. 3)
tributions not used for qualified expenses may be subject to
federal and state income tax and a 10% IRS penalty.)
• Example 2: Instead of starting to save when your
child was 3, you wait 10 years, until she turns 13. You put in
the same $200 per month to a 529 plan that earns the same
7% a year. After five years, when your daughter has turned
18, you will have accumulated slightly less than $15,000.
Clearly, there’s a big disparity between $64,000 and
$15,000. So, if you don’t want to be in a position where you
have to start putting away huge sums of money each month
to “catch up” on your college savings, you’ll be well advised
to start saving as early as possible — specifically, during the
first few years of your child’s life.
Of course, given all your other expenses, you may find
it challenging to begin putting away money for college. And
with so many years to go until you actually need the money,
it’s tempting to put off your savings for another day. But
those “other days” can add up — and before you know it,
college may be looming.
Consequently, you may want to put your savings on
“autopilot” by setting up a bank authorization to move
money each month into a college savings account. And, as
your income rises, you may be able to increase your monthly
contributions.
Save early, save often: It’s a good strategy for just about
any investment goal — and it can make an especially big difference
when it comes to paying for the high costs of higher
many jobs as you can handle.
Q. My sons have a bad habit of rifling through my computer
and reading things they shouldn’t. How can I stop them from
doing that?
A. You should start by having a chat with them about privacy.
Tell them that it’s not OK to snoop through another person’s files.
Of course, kids will be kids and a talk probably won’t
cure the problem entirely. In that case, use a program
like Lockscreen Pro, http://download.cnet.com/Lockscreen-Pro/3000-2084_4-75833346.html.
It goes above and beyond
the default lockscreen in Windows. It has a battery meter for
laptops, screen dimming and more.
It can even take a snapshot of anyone who tries to use your
computer when it’s active. That way, you’ll be able to catch those
snooping sons of yours in the act.
Q. I don’t want to pay big bucks for a new tablet. Is it OK
to buy a refurbished gadget?
A. Sure, as long as you do it the right way. Visit the manufacturer
of the gadget you want. Apple, Amazon and many other official
retailers have a refurbished store section with low prices. Try
to find “factory refurbished” gadgets, since these often come with
some form of a warranty and are repaired and tested thoroughly.
Be careful shopping for used gadgets. While they can cost less,
they are a much riskier buy than a refurbished gadget. Start your
search on a site like Worth Monkey. This will give you a fair starting
price to look for when you’re shopping.
Q. I’m thinking about selling my smartphone to help pay
for a new one. How do I make sure my information is completely
erased?
A. The easiest way is with a factory reset. This will delete everything
on your phone, so make sure your information is backed
up before you start. On an iPhone, go to Settings >> General >>
Reset.
Tap “Erase All Content and Settings” and then tap the big red
button that pops up.
For Androids, go to Settings >> Personal >> Backup & Reset.
Tap the Factory data reset button.
From here, you can delete your gadget’s SD card if you want,
too. If you want to wipe a stolen or lost phone remotely, look into
apps such as Find My iPhone or Carbonite Mobile.
Q. I just bought a new smartphone and I wanted to use my
old smartphone as an alarm clock. Can you help?
A. This is actually a piece of cake. And it’s a good idea because
a disconnected phone won’t bug you with texts and calls all
through the night.
Grab a charging dock that works with your phone. Then, in
the phone’s settings, make the lock-screen clock as big and bold as
possible.
Next, choose whether to use your phone’s default alarm app
or a third-party one.
For iPhones, I like iHome+Sleep. Android users can download
Alarm Clock Xtreme Free.
Both of these have advanced wake features to help you have
a more restful sleep.
Finally, set an alarm of your choice or use one of your phone’s
ringtones.
LOCAL BUSINE
CONNECTION
Q. I’ve been told to set up two-step verification on Google
to make my account safer. How do I do it?
A. That’s a good call. Two-step verification is a great way to
keep hackers and snoops at bay.
Log in to your Google account and go to Settings >> Security.
You will see the “2-step Verification” setting. Turn it on and
add your phone number. Google will send you a verification code
via phone call, text or its app every time you log in from a new
computer.
To authorize new mobile gadgets, you have to use a different
code. You can generate that by going to the “Authorizing applications
and sites” section of the Security menu.
Enter a name for your gadget or app and click “generate pass-
Take pride in your work, not y
word.” You should only have to input the code once per gadget or
app.
Four tricky Facebook scams to avoid
From snake-oil salesmen and pool-hall hustlers to Nigerian
princes and Spanish prisoners, scams were happening long before
the Internet. Unfortunately, the Internet has only made things
worse.
Modern scammers can reach billions of potential victims
with a single message. And their scams are getting better every
day. If you aren’t paying attention, you could fall for a scam and
not ever realize it.
One of the easiest places to encounter online scams is Facebook.
Facebook encourages sharing, which means certain scams
can travel far and wide.
These aren’t harmless scams either. Some of them can install
viruses that take over your account or steal your money. Yikes!
Here are four popular scams that should set off your warning
bells as soon as you see them.
1. Free giveaways
The easiest scam to fall for on Facebook is a free giveaway.
You’ll see everything from gift cards to free tablets, laptops and
smartphones. Who doesn’t like free?
Just one catch! You have to give the “company” your information.
Or you have to download a program to qualify.
This is a variation on a classic survey scam. These trick users
into giving out their information or downloading malicious files
onto their computers.
With the information you enter, a scammer has a foothold
into stealing your identity. Entering your cellphone number often
leads to bogus premium charges appearing on your wireless bill.
Go to www.komando.com/tips/index.aspx?id=14600 to
learn more about cellphone bill “cramming” and how to put a stop
to it.
It’s true that some companies do give away free stuff through
Facebook. When they do, however, it’s promoted on that company’s
official Facebook page.
If you check the company’s page or website and don’t see the
giveaway, steer clear. Even if it’s real, only enter through the company’s
official page. And only if it’s a company you trust. Scammers
like to set up fake sites and pages that mimic the real thing.
2. Viral videos
Almost as exciting as free gadgets is seeing the latest viral video.
However, many supposedly salacious celebrity “videos” posted
on Facebook aren’t videos at all.
When you click to watch, you’ll be asked to update your video
player first. You’ll even be provided with the updated program file.
How helpful! Of course, the program is really a virus. Plus, it will
automatically share the scam with all of your friends.
This one is easy to avoid. Type the video’s title into Google.
You should see a link to it on YouTube. If the video isn’t on You-
Tube or a legitimate news site, it’s a scam.
3. Custom profiles
Another common scam offers to change your Facebook profile
look or layout. A famous version was the Facebook Black
scam. It supposedly gave you a slick, black color scheme.
These scams try to trick you into installing a rogue Facebook
app. If you do, you give the scammer access to your personal data.
It also will spam your friends to try and trick them.
Again, this scam is easy to avoid. Just remember that there’s
no official, or unofficial, way to change your Facebook layout. A
program such as Social Fixer, http://socialfixer.com, can change
the way you see it, but nothing will change the way other people
see it.
4. Your profile
Knowing who views your profile is the Holy Grail of social
media. Who doesn’t want to know who is cyber-stalking them?
That’s why this scam has been around almost as long as Facebook.
No matter how often Facebook says it isn’t possible, people
still want to believe it is.
So they gladly download apps or visit websites that turn out
to be malicious. And they give full access of their Facebook profile
to strangers. No good can come of that.
The best you can do is see who has unfriended you. Of course,
that only works after you’ve activated one of the tracking services.
These are the most popular scams, but it’s really just the tip
of the iceberg. I keep you updated on the major ones on my Facebook
page, so be sure to “Like” me. If you want to keep track of
every scam happening on Facebook, the site Facecrooks, http://
Notice of Public Hearing
on Tax Increase
The CITY OF SANGER will hold two public hearings on a proposal to
increase total tax revenues from properties on the tax roll in the preceding
tax year by 8.566820 percent (percentage by which proposed tax rate exceeds
lower of rollback tax rate or effective tax calculated under Chapter
26, Tax Code). Your individual taxes may increase at a greater or lesser
rate, or even decrease, depending on the change in the taxable value of
your property in relation to the change in taxable value of all other property
and the tax rate that is adopted.
The first public hearing will be held on August 19, 2013 at 7:00 PM at
Sanger City Hall, 502 Elm Street, Sanger, TX 76266.
The second public hearing will be held on September 3, 2013 at 7:00 PM
at Sanger City Hall, 502 Elm Street, Sanger, TX 76266
The members of the governing body voted on the proposal to consider
the tax increase as follows:
FOR: Billy Ezell, Gary Bilyeu, Russell Martin,
Allen Chick, Scott Stephens
AGAINST: None
PRESENT
and not voting: Mayor Thomas Muir (votes only in case of a tie)
ABSENT: None
The average taxable value of a residence homestead in CITY OF
SANGER last year was $105,641. Based on last year’s tax rate of
$0.633049 per $100 of taxable value, the amount of taxes imposed last
year on the average home was $668.76.
The average taxable value of a residence homestead in CITY OF
SANGER this year is $107,819. If the governing body adopts the effective
tax rate for this year of $0.612526 per $100 of taxable value,
the amount of taxes imposed this year on the average home would be
$660.42.
If the governing body adopts the proposed tax rate of $0.665000 per $100
of taxable value, the amount of taxes imposed this year on the average
home would be $717.00.
Members of the public are encouraged to attend the hearings and express
their views.
* “Appraised value” is the amount shown on the appraisal roll and defined by Section 1.04(8), Tax Code.
Thursday August 15, 2013 v Sanger News v www.lemonspublications.com 14
By Kim
Komando
Q&A
Q. I use multiple browsers
on my computer. What’s
an easy way to delete my
browsing history from all of
them?
A. You could go through
each one and delete your history
one by one using the builtin
tools. However, an easier
way is to use a free cleaner like
CCleaner. This will wipe out
the history from any selected
browsers. It can also clean out
other junk files that slow your
computer down. In the future,
you can stop your browser history
from being recorded in the
first place. Every browser has
a Private Browsing or Incognito
mode just for this purpose.
You can find it in the browser’s
menu.
Q. I have a tablet I don’t
use very much anymore. I was
thinking that I might turn it
into a second computer monitor.
Is this possible?
A. It’s possible and relatively
easy. All you need is a
tablet stand — which you can
find online for $10-$20 — and
the right app. iDisplay works
on both Android tablets and
the iPad and scales to work on
large- and small-screen tablets.
An even easier solution is to
set the tablet near your workstation,
but don’t hook it up to
your computer. You can use it
to view news with an app like
Flipboard or to browse social
media. That way, you can have
those in the background when
you’re doing work or surfing
the Web. It sure beats having
dozens of tabs open in your
browser!
Q. Whenever I find a
good Web page online, I usually
print it to read it later. But
this is getting expensive and
I have trouble finding them
again in all the clutter. Is there
a better way?
A. Don’t worry; there
are plenty of better ways. You
could bookmark the sites in
your browser, but you can’t
see them if you lose Internet
access. Instead, you can use
the “Print to PDF” function in
your print menu. This saves the
original Web page into a digital
document you can read whenever.
If you don’t see that option
on your computer, grab a
PDF printer like doPDF. Want
to save a site to read later on
any gadget? You can use apps
like Pocket and Instapaper to
save text-only versions of the
site. Evernote and Springpad
can do this, as well.
Q. My friend posts a
bunch of political things on
Facebook that she finds from
other pages. Most of them
sound a bit off. Is there a fact
checker for that kind of thing?
A. There are several, actually.
Since you mentioned
Facebook by name, Facecrooks
is a good tool. It debunks common
myths, scams and other
junk people post on Facebook.
There are always the venerable
myth-busting sites like Snopes
and LazyTruth, too. Remember
to use them yourself before
you post something on Facebook.
Want to filter out certain
kinds of posts entirely? Grab a
program like Social Fixer. You
can set up powerful filters so
you see only what you want.
Q. My computer is about
two years old and it’s starting
to slow down in a big way. Do
you think it’s time to replace
it?
A. It depends on how
you’ve used the computer.
Most computers have a lifespan
of three years or more. If your
computer is a desktop, you
should be able get at least four
years out of it.
In your case, try to do
some maintenance fixes before
you junk the computer for a
new one. Clean up your startup
with Autoruns, http://technet.
microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx;
defragment
with Defraggler, www.
piriform.com/defraggler; run a
virus scan; and clean out clutter
with a program like CCleaner,
www.piriform.com/ccleaner.
If those don’t bring back
some of its old speed, think
about hardware upgrades, since
the problem is probably an aging
part.
Q. I received a letter from
a site I use. It says that someone
broke into their servers
and stole passwords. Could a
hacker use that password to
guess my other passwords?
A. It’s possible. It depends
on whether the password was
hashed. This means the company
replaced the password with
a bunch of gibberish in their
database.
If the company “salted”
the hash, it would be even
tougher for the hacker to get.
From there, it depends on how
simple your password was. If
you didn’t use a complex password,
the hacker might try to
dig up more of your accounts,
since you’re an easy target.
Test your password’s
strength on How Secure is
My Password, https://howsecureismypassword.net/.
If it
thinks your password is weak,
you need to make it stronger
now!
Q. School’s out for summer,
but I still want to keep a
leg up on my studies. Do you
have any online tools I can
use?
A. There are dozens of
great tools online. CourseRA,
https://www.coursera.org, and
Udacity, https://www.udacity.
com, both round up free online
courses from top universities
such as Brown, Harvard and
Yale. Some of them require
traditional enrollment but most
just give you the resources and
let you learn at your pace.
You might even be able
to get credit for some of them.
If you don’t find anything
you like there, check out The
Khan Academy, https://www.
khanacademy.org/, and Academic
Earth, http://academicearth.org/.
These tutoring
sites will help keep your mind
fresh. They’ll even tutor you on
practical knowledge and current
events.
Q. I’m looking for some
real ways to make money online.
Do you have any ideas?
A. Have you ever heard
of Amazon’s Mechanical Turk
service, https://www.mturk.
com/mturk/? It lets you complete
odd online jobs for cash.
These can be anything
from finding a contact email on
a website to writing an in-depth
how-to article. You won’t be
rolling in the dough, but if you
