RADIO SHACK STILL GOING STRONG 

Chris Bengston has 

owned and operated 

the Radio Shack on the 

square in downtown 

Sanger since 1985. It is 

the longest same-owner 

retail store in Sanger. 

She began her career 

with Radio Shack in 

1973 in Lewisville, Texas 

and sold that store 

in 1985. Chris is wellknown 

as the person to 

ask about electronics in 

Sanger. She brought her 

sister in to help about 

three years ago. Many 

people can’t tell which 

is Chris or Kathy.

The square has seen many changes through the years. After Smith Hardware 

burned, Chris added a key machine and began copying keys for houses, cars, motorcycles, 

boats, and RV’s. When the Denton County Building Supply closed she added 

Farben Hardware. In 2001 she added spirit wear and team sports uniforms, calling it 

Sanger Sports Center. 

Chris has been active in the community as a member of the Chamber of Commerce. 

She served on the Board of Directors for eight years and also served as president 

in 1995. She was a charter member of the Sanger Rotary Club and served as 

its president two terms. She was awarded Business of the Year by the Rotary Club 

in 2006-2007, as well as Business of the Quarter and Silver Service Sanger News Header Awards 1 by the 

Chamber of Commerce. 

Chris has built her business on service and honesty. She encourages people to 

shop Sanger first. Her greatest satisfaction is in watching the different generations 

grow up and continue to shop with her. Some that have left Sanger and come back to 

visit are surprised that she is still the same person running the Radio Shack!

It’s Homecoming Week! The Sanger Ex-Students’ Association 

is honoring classes that end in ‘3.’ 

Homecoming is Friday, October 4, when the Indians will 

play the Frisco Lonestar Rangers. The parade and exes’ luncheon 

will convene the next day. The luncheon is immediately 

following the parade on October 5, 2013 at 11:30 a.m., at SHS. 

This year the luncheon will be catered by Vance Godbey’s 

of Fort Worth. The exes will have a choice of Chicken Fried 

Steak or Chicken Breast. The reservation fee of $15.00 per person 

includes an entree, two salads, vegetables, cheesecake, iced 

tea, coffee and lemonade. 

The parade is always a big draw for the weekend, and the 

theme this year is “Super Heroes.” Groups interested in having 

floats will just go to the Stephen Baker football field and will be 

lined up as they come in. The parade is free. The parade will 

start at 10:00 a.m. at Stephen Baker Field. All entries need to 

be there by 9:00 a.m. to line up.

Duck Creek Cemetery 

Cleanup this Saturday 

There will be another work day for the Duck Creek Cemetery, also knows as Sullivan 

Cemetery. The cleanup is this Saturday, October 5th from 9am - ? 

For more information, please contact Jess Bell at 940-580-5075 or Kacie Pena at 940- 

735-1965 if you would like to help with the cleanup or can provide equipment. 

The cemetery is located west of Sanger on Duck Creek Road, where some of the city’s 

earliest settlers are laid to rest. The cemetery is overgrown and not maintained. Bell and 

Pena are seeking volunteers or groups to help with the project.

Delores Jean Bates Hutson 

Sanger resident Delores Bates Hutson died September 

15, 2013 following a lengthy battle with cancer. 

A gathering of family members and friends was held in 

Chattanooga, Tennessee on Sunday, 

September 22, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. followed 

by memorial services at 2:00 

p.m. at Turner Funeral Home. 

A second memorial was held in 

Lewisville, Texas on Sunday, September 

29, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. 

Delores is survived by her husband, 

Rickey Hutson of Sanger, 

Texas; one son, Jacen Keith Baugh; 

one granddaughter, Lauren Ashley 

Baugh; one grandson, Jacen Anthony 

Baugh, all of Soddy Daisy, Tennessee; 

four sisters, Nita Schaerer of Pilot Point, Texas, Linda 

Faye Taylor of Gainesboro, Tennessee, Norma Crawford 

of Ringgold, Georgia and Glenda Burris of Trion, Georgia; 

many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Betty Lou Beeler Gaddy 

Betty Lou Beeler Gaddy, 83 of Denton passed away on 

Friday, September 27, 2013 at Lake Village Nursing Home. 

She was born March 21, 1930 in Denton to John Clay and 

Mamie Ellen (Karr) Beeler. She was a Graduate of Denton 

Schools, and a member of the Baptist Church. She was married 

to the late Richard Sherwood Gaddy, who preceded 

her in death. She was retired from the S & H Green Stamp 

Store, Inc. as a District Manager. 

Mrs. Gaddy is survived by her son, Emmett Dwight 

Meredith and wife Barrie of Denton, sisters, Martha Ouellette 

of Sanger, and Ruth Bryan of Lewisville, a granddaughter, 

Lauren Meredith and nieces and nephews. 

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, October 1, 

2013 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Mulkey-Mason Funeral 

Home in Denton with Dr. Ben Smith officiating.

TWU seeks volunteers 

for knee pain study 

The Texas Woman’s 

University Department of 

Nutrition and Food Sciences 

is seeking volunteers for 

a study of the effects of tart 

cherry juice on improving 

joint function and reducing 

knee pain. 

The study is open to 

women and men between 

the ages of 45 and 79 who 

have pain associated with 

knee osteoarthritis. Participants 

must otherwise 

be healthy and mobile and 

must be willing to consume 

either tart cherry juice or a 

juice without tart cherry for 

a period of four months. 

Participants also will undergo 

range-of-motion measurements 

and complete 

pain and physical activity 

questionnaires.

Powder Puff game next Friday 

Project Graduation is sponsoring the annual Powder Puff flag football 

game on Friday, October 11 at 7:30 p.m., at Indian Stadium. The varsity 

boys have a bye next week and will help coach the game. The 

junior girls will take on the senior girls. Admission is $5. All proceeds go 

towards Project Graduation. 

7th ‘A’ wins Tournament 

Sanger’s 7th grade Purple Volleyball team won first place in the Anna 

Tournament. “This was a very tough tournament for us,” said coach 

Tracy Sykes. “We had trouble with several areas of our game from 

serve receive to serving. Even though we finished with first place, I felt 

like we could have played a lot better than we did.” Sykes said Brooke 

Rollins and Bailey Lewis had a spectacular tournament by scoring key 

points on difficult situations. “We are going to have to play a lot better 

if we intend to win district,” she added. Team members are: Front row,

The Sanger Indian JV lost to the Aubrey 

Chaparrals 44-28 on Thursday evening at Indian 

Stadium. The scoring for the Indians was done by 

Clayton McCollom, Lane Dillon (2), and Tyler Weger. 

Lane Dillon was perfect on PAT kicks. 

The defensive play of the game came 

as Walker Pyron sacked the Aubrey QB forcing a 

fumble which was recovered by Jason Saldana. 

The loss brings the JV Indians record to 

3-2 on the season. The team travels to Frisco this 

Thursday to take on the Rangers of Frisco Lonestar. 

Game time is scheduled for 6:30.

The Indians slipped out of Aubrey for their 

third straight victory 27-22 last Friday. Sanger 

coach Chuck Galbreath was very proud of his 

defense, who only allowed 13 first downs, 160 

rushing, 123 passing and five sacks. (See defensive 

stats on page 5). Sanger (3-2) host (5-0) 

Frisco Lone Star for homecoming on Friday. Lone 

Star beat Ft. Worth Castleberry 48-14, Whitesboro 

48-21, Lake Worth 54-20, Van Alstyne 51-28 and 

Anna 34-28. 

The Indians offense is being recognized by 

the Dallas Morning News stats/leaders: TreVon 

Jackson has the most TDs in 3A-under with 13 

and is 5th with 687 yards rushing (6.50 avg). 

Sanger quarterback Brandon Mann is 15th rushing 

overall with 417 yards and 5 TDs. (80-417 for 

5.21 avg.) He’s 8th passing with 754 yards and 

7 TDs. Only two interceptions. He’s completed 

53-82. Wyatt Broxson is 4th receiving with 4 TDs 

(18-368, 20.4 avg. catch). The Indians are 6th 

in total offense with 406 yards per game; 11th in 

points at 34.6 in the top 10 for passing and top 

five for rushing with 255.8 yards per game.

As an investor, how 

much risk can you tolerate? 

It’s an important question 

— because the answer can 

help you make the right investment 

choices. 

Before you know your 

risk tolerance, you’ll want 

to make sure you first understand 

the nature of investment 

risk — the risk of 

losing principal. This risk is 

especially prevalent when 

you invest in stocks, because 

stock prices will always fluctuate 

— and there are never 

any guarantees about performance. 

Of course, a decline 

in value does not mean 

you need to sell; you can 

always hold on to the stock 

with the hope that its value 

will bounce back. And this 

can certainly happen, but 

again — no guarantees. 

How you respond to 

this type of investment risk 

will tell you a great deal 

about your own risk tolerance. 

Of course, no one, 

whether he or she has a high 

tolerance for risk or a low 

one, particularly likes to see 

declines. But people do react 

differently. If you’re the 

sort of person who can retain 

your confidence in your 

investment mix and can

focus on the long term and 

the potential for a recovery, 

you may well have a higher 

tolerance for risk. But 

if you find yourself losing 

sleep over your losses (even 

if, at this point, they’re just 

“paper” losses), becoming 

despondent about reaching 

your goals, and questioning 

whether you should be 

investing at all, then you 

may have a low tolerance 

for risk. 

This self-knowledge 

of your own risk tolerance 

should help inform your investment 

decisions — to a 

point. 

Even if you determine 

you have a high tolerance 

for risk, you almost certainly 

should not load up your 

portfolio exclusively with 

stocks. If the stock market 

enters a prolonged slump, 

you could face heavy losses 

that may take many years 

to overcome, causing you 

to lose significant ground in 

the pursuit of your financial 

goals. Conversely, even if 

you discover you don’t have 

much tolerance for risk, you 

won’t want to invest only in 

supposedly “safe” vehicles, 

such as certificates of deposit 

(CDs). During those 

periods when rates on CDs 

and similar instruments are 

low, as has been the case in 

recent years, your interest 

payments from these investments 

may not even keep up 

with inflation — meaning 

that, over time, you could 

end up losing purchasing 

power, which, over the long 

term, can be just as big a 

risk as market declines. 

Ultimately, then, you’ll 

probably want to let your 

risk tolerance guide your 

investment choices — but 

not dictate them with an 

“iron hand.” So, if you believe 

you are highly tolerant 

of risk, you might have a 

somewhat higher percentage 

of stocks in your portfolio 

than if you felt yourself 

to be highly risk-averse — 

but in any case, you’ll likely 

benefit from building a diversified 

portfolio containing 

stocks, bonds, government 

securities, CDs and 

other investments. While 

this type of diversification 

can’t guarantee profits or 

protect against loss, it can 

help reduce the effects of 

volatility on your portfolio. 

By knowing your own 

risk tolerance, and the role 

it can play in your choices, 

you can help yourself 

create an effective, suitable 

investment strategy — one 

that you can live with for a 

long time and that can help 

you avoid the biggest risk of 

all: not reaching your longterm 

goals.
