By Lynne S. Smiland
Texas rainfall levels started
summer, assessed which
plants had fared best in the
extremely dry heat.
The Denton County Master
Gardener program is an
education and volunteer initiative
affiliated with the Texas
Master Gardener Association
and Texas AgriLIFE Extension
While “drought resistant”
does not mean “drought impervious”,
there are many
plants, such as succulents,
ornamental grasses, and native
wildflowers, which can
tolerate and even thrive in
conditions of low water and
high heat. Some have energy-efficient
changes in photosynthesis,
for example, while
others have extensive root
systems to reach groundwater
to retain water. While
a cactus and rock garden is
certainly one way to go, there
are plenty of other beautiful
To learn about these
drought resistant options, plan
advantages of aerial spraying
may be the most effective
means of combating
WNV. It is believed that the
ability of aerial spraying to
cover very large areas of
the county at one time may
provide the needed boost
in preventive measures to
reduce the growing number
of cases occurring.
The pesticide used in
aerial spraying is very similar
to the one employed in
ground spraying. It is not
a more concentrated dose,
and it has been declared safe
for humans and pets by the
Centers for Disease Control.
The persistence of this disease
outbreak has led health
officials to recommend that
the county expand measures
to protect County residents.
HISTORIC DOWNTOWN SANGER
Sellabration Vendors Application
We are grateful for your interest in participating in our 34th Sanger Heritage Sellabration
held in downtown Sanger and the City Park on Saturday, September 8, 2012. This annual
event is a highlight of the Sanger Community.
The SACC has worked hard on providing a fun and successful Sellabration. We ask that all
vendors be aware of and in agreement with the following guidelines:
1. Booths and spaces are rented and assigned on a “First Come, First Serve” basis after FULL PAYMENT is
received. Deadline for entry forms and fees is August 26, 2012.
2. Arts and Crafts should be “Handcrafted”.
3. The Sellabration will be held regardless of weather and no refunds will be made.
4. Booth set up may begin after 7:00 P.M, Friday, September 7, 2012 and must be completed by 8:00 A.M., Saturday,
September 8, 2012. Sanger Area Chamber of Commerce is not responsible for theft or vandalism. Please
DO NOT Begin to dismantle displays prior to 6:00 P.M. Saturday.
5. The chamber reserves the right to refuse vendor/exhibits which would in any way distract from the dignity of the
event..
6. The chamber reserves the right to stop or remove from the event any individual or exhibitor, performing any act
or practice which, in the opinion of the Chamber, is objectionable, interferes, or creates a health, safety or fire
hazard.
7. All vendors/exhibitors are expected to conduct themselves in a polite and professional manner. Any unruly
conduct, refusal to follow rules, or use of foul language to event patron or event personnel will be considered
grounds for expulsion from the event.
8. Vendors must supply their own electrical extension cords. The chamber is not responsible, nor will it
arrange to provide any kind of labor for installation, removal or servicing of vendor/exhibit booth.
9. All booths must use weighted tie downs and supports; use of stakes driven into the ground, pavement or
concrete is prohibited.
North Texas Trinity Cowboy Church (http://
www.northtexascowboy.org/index.php) initiated
a “Back To School” supply drive in response
to local need. They collected school
supplies and food donations to help support
the community outreach program in Sanger-
ISD. The church donated specific items to the
Linda Tutt High School and Special Education
classrooms in the district. An amazing outpouring
of donations were collected. Snacks
and easy to prepare foods were donated to
help students in need. The food will be distributed
by the SangerISD Outreach program
as well. The church is a new church, temporarily
meeting Sunday mornings at 10 am at
Buffalo Ranch on Ganzer Rd. The congregation
is small but growing and happy to serve
the Sanger community. Come visit with us at
MyPlate Food Groups / Elija MiPlato
Library offers nutrition series
By Lynne S. Smiland
Do you need to learn
about food labels to make
healthier food choices, or
how to make your favorite
dishes more nutritionfriendly?
Are your homeschooled
kids ready for an
introduction to health and
nutrition? ¿Habla Español
y quiere ser de buen ejemplo
de salud a los niños? The
Sanger Public Library is
here to help.
Meilana Charles, Denton
County Extension Assistant,
will present the free
bilingual classes “MyPlate
Food Groups/Elija MiPlato”,
beginning Tuesday,
September 11th, at 7 p.m. at
the library, and continuing
the following 4 Tuesdays.
Ms. Charles, a native of
New Orleans, has been with
AgriLIFE for 4 years and is
finishing her master’s degree
in Family Sciences. Library
employee Betsy Mejorado
will translate for Spanish
speakers.
This series is part of
the Better Living for Texans
initiative, and focuses on the
five food groups encompassing
daily nutritional needs,
and introduces the My-
Plate/MiPlato method of
eating a balanced diet. This
visual tool replaced the familiar
MyPyramid last summer,
because it is easy to use
and remember, as people
usually eat off a plate. In
addition to visually dividing
up food groups, portion
sizes will be easier to understand.
Better Living for Texans
is a free nutrition and
healthy living program for
adults and kids who want
to learn how to eat more
nutritious meals and also
stretch their food dollars.
It is a cooperative endeavor
of the TexasAgriLife Extension
Service, Texas Health
and Human Services Commission,
and the U.S. Department
of Agriculture.
The different classes they
sponsor cover a variety of
nutritional topics, but always
have recipes to try and
booklets with nutritional information.
The Community Outreach
program was created
to get parents more involved
the support of community
groups,” Foster said. “None
of us can do it all.”
Sanger does not have a
lot of service organizations,
so they try to facilitate them
doing what they can do. The
groups and individuals join
ranks to provide backpacks
filled with school supplies,
give students tennis shoes
so they can fully participate
in physical education class.
They even provide socks
and underwear, in some
cases. “All our programs are
aimed at student academic
success.”
Through a local church,
the liaisons partner in a
clothing swap to help supply
clothes to the most in need.
“It’s really trying to tie all
the resources out there together,”
Foster said.
Another effort is the
Friday Backpack program.
The liaisons identify students
who need food assistance
and send them home
on Fridays with food for
themselves for the weekend.
Backpacks are returned on
Mondays or Tuesdays and
monitored to see if the need
still remains. “We also part-
The supply room has clothing
(top), school supplies
and shoes (middle) and
Methodist Church,” Foster
said. “They provide ten boxes
of food a month.”
The food is distributed
for the families of some students.
“Unfortunately, for
some families, they are the
only source of nutrition.”
ESL classes for adults
also meet two nights a week
to help parents learn English.
The SISD has partnered
with the Denton ISD
to operate a satellite office in
Sanger.
The two women also
oversee campus volunteers.
They register and do background
checks on folks who
help out in the schools and
classrooms.
In addition, they monitor
the district’s homeless
and foster students. “We
want to make sure they are
successful as they can be,”
Foster said.
Homelessness does not
necessarily mean the student
lives in a car or a campground
or a motel. Federal
definitions include families
who have doubled up in one
residence or those students
who live with a non-custodial
parent or guardian.
“We are not social workers,”
said Foster. So, she and
Higgs have compiled a resource
book for parents. It
lists everything available for
support services. “We want
to help them connect to who
can help them.”
A new program is called
Watch Dogs. It’s a national
program that is being started
in elementary schools and
is short for Dads of Great
Residential/Commercial Students. It will bring fathers
into the schools to act
as positive role models and
mentors. Principals are currently
training to begin the
program in their schools.
Foster wanted to acknowledge
the tremendous
support from individuals
and businesses for all their
varied programs. She said
Grey Coker Sunday school classes bring
food, student councils bring
food, and a longtime BSNF
employee supplies a huge
amount of supplies. She
940.229.4939 added, the NCTC Surgical
Unit adopts students and
Current Tax Year
Bids and references available upon families request as the need arises,
and with holiday assistance.
She continued to name
churches, also, the Elks
Lodge, the Lion’s Club, the
Wal-Mart distribution center
and other groups and
businesses who either adopt
students or give cash donations.
“We don’t have a budget
from the ISD, the state,
or the federal government,”
Foster said. “We are 100
percent locally funded.”
The United Way of
Denton County is stepping
up to partner now, since
what little state money there
was, was cut 60 percent.
“They acknowledged our
need here.”
Foster, who is also the
executive director of the
Sanger Education Foundation,
said it’s good for students
to know there are people
who care about them.
“We want them to feel a
place of belonging.”
Kent Crutsinger, Sanger
ISD superintendent, called
Foster and Higgs “solid
rocks that make a foundation
to build upon.”
“They have a passion
and love for Sanger that is
hard to match. They work
many hours behind the
scenes to make so many
students happy and feel
The Sanger ISD Community Resource Center bus
like they can make it in
our schools each year,”
Crutsinger said. “The only
other thing that really needs
to be said is, ‘Well done
good and faithful servants.’
”
Foster, reflecting on her
job, said that our kids and
students are a reflection of
our community. “This is an
amazing community with
incredible people in it. I’ve
been here since 1981, and I
just want to give back.”
Higgs echoed Foster’s
sentiments. “I went
to school here, my kids go
to school here. I want to
be able to give back to the
community that raised me.
They have a good heart.”
Foster said they pass
along thank you notes they
receive after removing student
names to businesses
and organization to see the
impact they are having in
student’s lives.
Always humble, both
women will tell you they are
just the behind the scenes facilitators.
Back in 1868, most of the
synthetics in so-called
“modern” products hadn’t even
been invented. Today, we’re still
free of phthalates, formaldehyde,
and a whole lot of stuff both you
without. For natural products that really work, look to the brand
that’s had years to get it right. Your grandmothers certainly did.
The Spirit
of Sanger
Yes, I’m new to Sanger.
But there’s some things you
all need to know about your
city.
First, it may just be a
Texas thing, but wow, there
is a sense of community
here, a sense of caring that I
have found unmatched anywhere
else I’ve lived. And
I’ve been around.
Call it Texas Proud,
Sanger Proud, but there’s a
spirit in Sanger that swirls
about the diners, down the
halls of the schools, in the
banks and through City
Hall.
No, Sanger isn’t perfect.
It’s not utopia, either.
But after visiting with some
leaders in town, I see it
starts at the top and trickles
down. The enthusiasm and
the positive vibe.
Consider These
Financial Gifts For
Your Grandchildren
National Grandparents
Day is celebrated on September
9. If you’re a grandparent
yourself, you already
know the pleasures of having
grandchildren in your
life. So you may want to
take this occasion to think
of ways you can help those
grandchildren get the most
out of their lives.
Perhaps the most valuable
thing you could give
to your grandkids is the
gift of education. Consider
this: Over a lifetime, college

you might recognize that
“sound” as absolute quiet.
My two girls are far removed
from their schools
years. (Yes, I’m old.) But,
I can remember the weeks
and then the days leading
up to the first day of school.
The very first day of
school was probably more
stressful on me than the
girls. Walking them to their
kindergarten class that first
day was tough on me. My
babies, off to spend the day
with a stranger. How soon
before the office calls to tell
me Lindsey or Carrie has a
stomach ache. Well, it never
happened.
In fact, I was the one
wouand tight. Both girls
were thrilled to be in school,
and anxious to go back the
next day. As you may know,
that tends to change as the
grades pass by, the homework
gets harder, and the
tests start really counting towards
a grade.
I think they wanted a
dog just so they could say
the dog ate their homework.
Or maybe it was to keep me
company during the days
they were in school. Sixth
and seventh grades added
new adventures to school
life -- hormones and boys.
The boys, and I mean
BOYS, matured slower than
the girls. Not only physically,
but more so emotionally.
They acted goofy compared
to the girls of the same
grade. Don’t know if that
has changed, but I suspect
not.
Then, there were the
hormones. What happened
to my little girls. Suddenly,
they were becoming young
women. And, it seemed to
me at the time, they could
cry at the drop of a hat, over
anything. Girls can be mean
too.
Now, this was before
cell phones and texting. But,
mean girls are mean girls,
even before cell phones.
There were notes passed and
cliques. For the most part,
my daughters got through
those years unscathed. Then
came high school.
And, boyfriends with
cars. Arrrrgh! My mother
always said wait till you
have kids of your own. How
did she know, I wondered.
So, as I grew older and started
catching myself acting
more and more like my father,
and the girls grew less
and less inclined to be scene
in public with me, the circle
was almost complete.
My one daughter got
married, and recently had a
daughter of her own. They
all live in Florida, place I
called home for 38 years.
I guess my point is,
and I do have one, is that as
school, relax and enjoy each
day with them. Support
their academic endeavors
and warn them about boys.
This you must do now,
because I can guarantee
you, one day before you
know it, you’ll wake up to
an empty nest and those
graduates earn, on average,
about $1 million more than
those without a degree according
to the Census Bureau.
So, putting money
toward your grandchildren’s
college education is probably
a pretty good investment.
Furthermore, your
grandchildren may well
need the help, because college
is expensive and costs
continue to rise. Consequently,
you may want to
contribute to a 529 plan. You
have several options for how
the money can be invested
and contribution limits are
quite high. All withdrawals
are free from federal income
taxes, provided the money
is used for qualified college
expenses. (Keep in mind,
though, that non-qualified
withdrawals will be taxable
and possibly subject to penalties.)
Plus, if you invest in
your own state’s 529 plan,
your contributions may be
deductible on your state income
taxes.
If you name one grandchild
as a beneficiary of a
529 plan and that grandchild
decides not to go to
college, you can switch the
account to another grandchild
— in other words,
you maintain control of the
money for the life of the account.
Of course, despite its
economic benefits, college
is not for everyone. So if
you wanted to provide financial
help to a grandchild
who seems likely to
choose a different route in
life, what could you do?
One possibility is to
set up a custodial account,
often known as an UGMA
(Uniform Gift to Minors
Act) or UTMA (Uniform
Transfer to Minors Act).
You can fund a custodial
account with many different
types of investments,
but the use of the money is
entirely up to your grandchildren
when they reach
the age of termination in
whatever state in which
they live. But if your reason
for funding a custodial account
is simply to provide
a gift, then you might not
be concerned with how the
money is used.
On the other hand,
if you want to give your
grandchildren a financial
gift with greater control,
you may want to speak to
your attorney about your
options. One possibility
is to set up an irrevocable
trust. You can fund this
trust with either cash or
securities and specify at
the time the trust is created
when the funds can be
used. So for example, you
can provide that the trust
pay your grandchild a certain
amount of money at
one age, with another installment
coming several
years later. Keep in mind,
though, that trusts are complex
instruments and may
have tax considerations,
so in addition to consulting
with an attorney, you’ll
want to discuss your plans
with your tax advisor.
Whichever option is
right for your family, use
so looked forward to when
once school started so long
ago, will have become just
silent days with plenty of
free time to think about
what you could have done
differently.
Until next week.
It consists of teams of 4.
Each team member runs a
The uniqueness does not
stop there. Instead of a baton
that is traditionally used
in Track relay races each
team has a work glove.
Madison on Friday night at
Sanger is rebuilding after
consecutive 9-2 seasons the
past two years. The Indians
currently have zero returning
starters on offense and four
returning starters on defense.
Kyle Scheffler, Sanger’s only
returning offensive starter,
should return at some point
this season to play on the
offensive line. He is injured
right now.
Sanger will be playing a
lot of young players mixed
with a few seniors. The de-
and as they gain experience
Sanger hopes to become
a potent offensive football
team. Sanger will use a two
quarterback system featuring
a tall, speedy Wyatt Broxson
and a powerful, strong
armed Brandon Mann. Both
quarterbacks have talents
that will be implemented in
this offense. Derek Shelby
will play running back and
he has good speed, quickness
and has the ability to run
through tacklers as well.
The Indians have done
well in their two scrimmages
against Springtown and Ft.
Worth Castleberry, but they
have a big test against Dallas
Madison, who is a preseason
favorite to win District
11-3A with Ferris, Dallas
Roosevelt, Dallas Wilmer-Hutchins.
Dallas Prime
Prep Academy, started by
Deon Sanders, is in their district,
but won’t field a varsity
team this year.
Madison is a team with
very good speed and talent.
Madison was a 7-4 playoff
team in 2011 and 5-0 in district
play. Madison is a spread
team on offense and will use
four wide receivers most of
the time. Their quarterback,
#12 Randall Johnson, is
6’2” and throws the ball very
well. He has several good receivers
but #7 Derrick Smith
seems to be his favorite target.
He is also 6’2” and has
great speed and good hands
to go with his speed.
They use two different
types of running backs. Trey
Gardener is 5’6” but is very
quick and slippery. They
will also use their MLB, #3
Oshea White at running
back. He is 5’11” 225 and
is a true power back. Madison
is playing an even front,
4-3 defense this year. They
have great size up front and
a speedy secondary. They
have a very talented defensive
end in #11 Anthony
Davis but the best player
seems to be MLB, White.
“Our team is obviously
not only young but has a
very limited amount of varsity
experience,”said Sanger
head coach Chuck Galbreath.
“Most of our players
either played on the 9th,
JV or had limited varsity
playing time last season.
“With that said we
are having great practices
and the expectation for
prove every week to make
this happen but these kids
and coaches expect to be a
playoff team and are working
every day to make this
happen. We are excited to
get the season started and to
see how we stack up against
a talented Madison team.”
Several vehicles broken into
Hours: 5:45 a.m. - 6:30 p.m. “We provide transportation to and from schools”
By ROGER BALLAS
Sanger News staff writer
SANGER -- More than 16 residents woke up last Friday
morning to find their vehicles broken into, according to Sanger
Police Department Detective Jonathan Perkins.
Hard hit in the city were Heritage West neighborhood on
Sante Fe and Good Night streets. Laney street off of Keaton
Road. SouthPark and Deer Run behind Hunter’s Convenient
Store and Diane Drive street. Owners reported that they found
windows smashed and items from inside taken.
Perkins said the burglaries to motor vehicles continue being
investigated by him and other members of the department. They
plan to review store videos from businesses in Denton and Fort
Worth where credit cards taken from inside a number of the vehicles
were used.
Among items stolen were computers, business documents,
check books, credit cards and other personal identifications.
“Don’t leave vehicles unlocked and don’t leave valuables in your
car,” warned Perkins.
“I was stupid,” remarked a Heritage West resident who had
left her purse in her car. “Before I could cancel my cards, they had
already used them.”
Burglars popped out windows by prying them out, theorized
Perkins. While reports are still being gathered, police have yet to
make an arrest.
Perkins said everyone should keep lists of serial numbers
and other identifying marks. He suggested residents visit www.
leadsonline.com and go to a link under services.
He said the department uses the site to check pawnshop
items in case where they could be listed as stolen. On the site,
residents can list the serial numbers of property and in the event
it is stolen, they can report it and police have a better chance of
recovering items.
Meanwhile, as victims wait to recover stolen articles, police
work to find the culprits.
The
thiefs
pryed
Local DQs add vintage
Orange Julius beverages
The Sanger Dairy
Queen store is among the
first in a new wave of installations
in the State to
install new equipment to
produce Orange Julius beverage
products at Dairy
Queen and thus include a
product that for a long time
was available only in a freestanding
Orange Julius facility.
Re-introduction to the
86-year-old formula product
is ongoing throughout
area DQs owned by TheRichesonGroup.
Originally,
back in 1929, an orange
juice stand owned by Julius
Freed collaborated with real
estate developer Bill Hamlin
to develop this frothy,
creamy product, and people
lined up at the free-standing
West-Nile
(Continued from pg. 1)
The declaration of a
Health Emergency will allow
the County to request
State and Federal resources.
However, as in Dallas
County, the municipalities
in Denton County will determine
whether they wish
to be included in the spraying.
Prompt response from
the municipalities will be
encouraged to enable optimal
use of the aerial spray
resource. The City of
Denton declined the aerial
spraying. Sanger city officials
met this week.
On Monday, August
27, 2012 the Sanger City
Council met in emergency
session and opted in to aerial
spraying. This means that
the City of Sanger will be
included in the aerial spraying.
Aerial spraying will
begin Thursday, August
30 and Friday, August 31
between 9 p.m. and 2 a.m.
Each area will be sprayed
twice. Denton County will
be releasing more detail
timeframes for future aerial
spraying. Their website
is listed at the end of this
article, along with links to
other helpful information.
Aerial spraying is only
a part of the City’s efforts
to reduce the mosquito
population. The City has
been conducting ground
spraying and treating stagnant
water for mosquito
larvae for several weeks.
We are redoubling our efforts
to treat stagnant water.
Code enforcement will
also be contacting homeowners
with stagnant water
on their property and
offer to treat it as well. If
you have stagnant water on
your property the best solution
is to remove the water
by draining. If the water
cannot be drained you can
call public works 940-458-
2571 and have it treated.
Despite ongoing efforts,
there have been at
least two confirmed cases
within the Sanger Zip
Code and one inside the
city limits. West Nile virus
is a potentially serious
virus that is transmitted by
mosquitoes. Less than 1%
of those infected with West
Nile virus will experience
the serious form of the illness
(West Nile Neuroinvasive
Disease). Serious
symptoms include high fever,
severe headache, neck
stiffness, disorientation,
tremors or convulsions, vision
loss, muscle weakness,
and numbness or paralysis.
Residents experiencing any
of these symptoms should
immediately contact their
health care provider. The
elderly and individuals with
store, demanding, “Give me
an Orange, Julius!” Thus the
new product was ordered as
Orange Julius. Orange Julius
was named the official
drink of the 1946 New York
World’s Fair, and in ensuing
years became known
with the slogan, “A Devilish
Good Drink.”
In 1987, the Orange
Julius chain was bought by
International Dairy Queen
and in 1999 became part of
Berkshire Hathaway, as part
of its purchase of International
Dairy Queen.
The local Orange Julius
menu will feature the Original
Premium, in its primary
flavor as well as Strawberry
Banana, Mango Pineapple
and Tripleberry, which will
also be the flavors for the exciting
new Smoothies, made
with real fruit and yogurt.
TheRichesonGroup is a
53-store organization based
in Graham, Texas, with
stores in ten of the State’s
18 Designated Marketing
Areas. Annually it provides
jobs for some 1,000 people,
serves up a million pounds
of potatoes, over a half million
pounds of American
beef and a half million gallons
of soft serve dessert
mix.
“We are proud to bring
Orange Julius products into
our Dairy Queen operation,
and thus include right in the
midst of our full menu one
of the long-esteemed frothy
beverage favorites,” says
Doris Richeson, Chairman
of the Board.
underlying medical conditions
are known to be at an
increased risk. The majority
of serious WNV infections
and deaths occur in persons
over the age of 50.
Around 20% of those
bitten by a West Nile viruscarrying
mosquito may experience
mild symptoms
(West Nile fever), such as fever,
headache, nausea, body
aches, swollen lymph nodes,
and skin rash. Approximately
80% of those bitten by an
infected mosquito will not
experience any symptoms.
Mitigation efforts will
not eliminate the threat of
contracting West Nile virus.
Your best protection is to
follow the guidelines provided
by the health department.
These include: staying
indoors from dusk till dawn,
wearing long sleeves and
pants, and using an insect
repellent containing DEET
if you are outside. The links
below will provide additional
information on West Nile
and aerial spraying.
Level III NICU
At Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Denton, high-risk pregnancies
are the highest priority for the experienced, dedicated and
compassionate team of nurses, other caregivers, and obstetricians
on the medical staff. The area’s only perinatologist, an obstetrician
who specializes in care for moms and newborns at risk for
complications, provides support and is a resource for the team. And
with Denton’s only Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, exceptional
care is close to home. All of which makes Texas Health Denton the
place to be when things don’t go as planned.
