The Heroic Story of Odysseus The Odyssey deals withOdysseus’ adventures as he makes his way home fromTroy and with events that take place on Ithaca justbefore and after his return. The first excerpts that youwill read depict some of the wanderings of Odysseusafter his departure from Troy with a fleet of 12 shipscarrying about 720 men. This time his opponents arenot military ones. Instead, he encounters variousmonsters who try to devour him and enchantingwomen who try to keep him from his wife, Penelope. The final excerpts describe Odysseus’ homecoming andhis reunion with Penelope and his son, Telemachus. Inaddition to great strength and courage, what setsOdysseus apart from others is a special quality that hasbeen called his craft or guile: the ingenious tricks heuses to get himself out of difficult situations. The Intervention of the Gods and GoddessesAdding another dimension to the human strugglesrecounted in Homer’s epics are the conflicts among thegods and goddesses on Mount Olympus (E-lGmPpEs). InHomer’s time, most Greeks believed that their gods notonly took an active interest in human affairs but alsobehaved in recognizably human ways, often engagingin their own trivial quarrels and petty jealousies. Forexample, Athena, the goddess of war and practicalwisdom, supported the Greek cause in the TrojanWar and championed Odysseus, while Aphrodite(BfQrE-dFPtC), the goddess of love, sided with Paris and hisfellow Trojans. The story of Odysseus’ return from Troycontains some notable instances of divine interference.Odysseus has Athena on his side, but he has displeasedthe gods who were on the side of Troy. Furthermore, asyou will see, he angers another god during one of hisfirst adventures and still another later on. As a result, heis forced to suffer many hardships before he manages toreturn home.To Homer’s audience, the Odyssey, with itsinterfering gods and goddesses and its strange landsand creatures, must have seemed as full of mysteryand danger as science fiction and fantasy adventuresseem to people today. Just as we can imagine aliens inthe next galaxy or creatures created in a laboratory, theancient Greeks could imagine monsters living justbeyond the boundaries of their known world. It wasnot necessary for them to believe that creatures suchas one-eyed giants did exist, but only that they might. This detail of a late 18th-century frieze depicts several Greek gods and goddesses.ErosGod of love(also knownas Cupid)AphroditeGoddess oflove andmother of ErosApolloGod of music, poetry, andprophecyAthenaGoddess of war, wisdom, andclevernessMusesDaughters of Zeus (threeshown here), often viewed assources of divine inspirationhomer’s world 1089
