HomogenizersNAIL HOMOGENIZERThe Nail Homogenizer is a hand-heldattrition mill that easily pulverizes small nailsamples for more reliable dermatologicaltesting. When treated with 10% KOH, themicronized samples spread out rapidly andevenly beneath a cover slip, making studyeasier and more accurate. The homogeneoussample derived from using the NailHomogenizer increases the chances ofdiscovering fungal hyphae in a specimen.Additionally, using pulverized samplesincreases the possibility of culture isolationby permitting greater numbers of potentiallyviable fungal cells to come into direct contactwith the isolation medium.Pulverizing in the Nail Homogenizer is asimple task, and laboratory safety isimproved since no sharp-edged tools arerequired. The technician places a specimenin the mill cavity, presses the two mill halvestogether, and rotates the halves in oppositedirections several times. The labtechnician holds the egg punch in one handand centers the bottom of the punch over theend of the egg. As the trigger button ispushed and released, the knife makes a 1"diameter cut, and the circular cap of the eggis ready to be lifted off. The lower air sacmembrane is exposed, intact and readilyaccessible. Because the unit is hand-held, itcan be used at any convenient height. Eachunit includes brass fittings and six feet oftubing to connect to a compressed air source.The egg punch may be sterilized by suitabledisinfectants or by heating in dry air.
