Plasticskins do, however, detract from theferromagnetic properties of the topand are unsatisfactory for magnetichold-downs.Steel Honeycomb CleanTop ®Increasingly, researchers are usinghoneycomb construction tops withtheir lab tables to facilitate bolt-downmounting of their equipment to aflat and stable work surface. TMC’sspill-proof CleanTop is uniquelysuited to such applications.For a complete discussion ofCleanTop Optical Tops, see Section 3.Granite TopsGranite surfaces are standard with64 Series TableTop Platforms. Theyare available on special order withother isolation systems. The advantagesof a granite top are its relatively highmass and stiffness and the potentialfor being lapped to a precise surfaceflatness. Granite’s non-magneticnature is useful in some applications.For small tops, granite is aninexpensive, moderate performancematerial. Performance SummarySmall Tops for Lab TablesDampingStructural damping determines howquickly an excited resonance in atable top decays. The simplest way tomeasure damping is to hit the tabletop with a hammer and measurethe decay with an accelerometerand oscilloscope or spectrum analyzer.The height of a resonance peakin the “compliance curve” alsomeasures damping.ComplianceCompliance is a reciprocal measurementof the dynamic stiffness of atable top. The data are obtained byinputting a measured force to thetable top with a calibrated hammerand measuring the resultant acceler -ation (or displace ment) with anaccelerometer.
