been in the river for hours. Collected material<br />

from the G aula 4 August 1961 (partly<br />

published in Andersen 1962), gave the impression<br />

of a fauna even richer than that in June<br />

1965, quantitatively as well as qualitatively.<br />

This material had been in the river for less<br />

than one day.<br />

IV. Sites with compact silt submerged by<br />

the river<br />

Sample IV-l (Table VII), the Gaula, Station<br />

6, 12 June 1965: Sparse vegetation. The sites<br />

had been submerged at least seven, perhaps<br />

twelve, days and nights.<br />

Sample IV-2 (Table VII), Rundhaug, 22<br />

June 1967: Sparse vegetation. The sites had<br />

been submerged a few hours. The silt was<br />

crushed and washed within an area of about<br />

2-4 m 2 •<br />

Sample IV-3, Rundhaug, 22 June 1967:<br />

Dense vegetation. The sites had been submerged<br />

a few hours. No Coleoptera were<br />

found by crushing the silt. Earlier in the day,<br />

before the sites were flooded, they harboured<br />

a rich fauna (Samples 1-5).<br />

Observations and experiments<br />

When jars, contaInIng adult Coleoptera<br />

living in their natural substratum, were carefully<br />
