New England Music Camp
Since 1937, New England
Music Camp has provided a
world-class music education
to aspiring young artists from around the globe. As
Snow Pond Center for the Arts continues to expand
its programs, NEMC maintains the same foundation
it has for the last 78 seasons. While the program is
always being groomed and fine-tuned, the philosophy
of the camp has remained the same; to provide an institution
dedicated to the cultivation and refinement
of musical skills in young people, while supporting
and developing their physical, emotional, and social
well-being. NEMC has, and always will, provide a
balanced program of music and recreation.

. As NEMC continues to thrive, the demand for
certain programming has been expanded. Over the
last few years three areas in particular have grown to
fit the needs of the campers: Jazz, Chamber Music,
and Musical Theater.
The study of Jazz has always been an integral part
of the NEMC programming. However, as curricular
demand and popularity has grown, additional class
offerings have expanded. NEMC now boasts two Jazz
Ensembles, Jazz Combos, as well as several historical
classes with jazz focused syllabus. Also added this
summer is the Bill and Dorothy Schmearer Scholarship
for Jazz Studies, which is a single session, full
tuition scholarship, awarded to one camper each
summer, with a proclivity in jazz.
It is well documented that study in small group
settings, enhances a child’s ability to be musically independent.
The Chamber Music program at NEMC has
also developed in the recent years. Chamber offerings
now extend to all instrumental majors and studios.
Campers have the opportunity to participate in different
groups like String Quartets, Wind Ensembles,
Quintets, and Collaborative Piano. Area coordinators
assign students into several groups, with each ensemble
coached directly by one of NEMC’s Faculty Artists.
Last season, NEMC also reintroduced Musical
Theater into the camp programming. In the 70’s,
80’s and 90’s, musicals were a part of every summer.
NEMC brought theater back with a bang with their
production of The 25th Annual Putnum County Spelling
Bee, which had a sold out run at Alumni Hall in
2014. This new major studies in a workshop setting,
with the main focus on the fundamentals of musical
theater performance: acting, singing, and dancing.
This summer’s performance will be Stephen Sondheim’s
Into The Woods with performances on August
7th and 8th at 7:30pm in Alumni Hall.
Part of NEMC’s mission is that any child, regardless
of financial means, should have the opportunity
to attend camp. Building on that mission, NEMC
has added three additional Merit Scholarships to an
already generous Financial Aid and Scholarship Program.
The Bill and Dorothy Schmearer Scholarship,
as referred to above, the Gregorian Scholarship for
Violin or Viola, and The Damon Holton Scholarship
for Guitar. Now, with these three new merit scholarships,
as well as the existing Green Scholarship and
the financial aid program, NEMC will be able to
continue educating talented, young musicians from
across the world.
