Friends of Messalonskee
Friends of Messalonskee is a
nonprofit volunteer organization
dedicated to the preservation of
Messalonskee Lake/Snow Pond.
We have promoted responsible use
of the lake since our incorporation
in 1990 as the Messalonskee Lake
Association. Over the past 25
years, the challenges to the lake
have grown. Extensive development
along its shores and throughout
the Belgrade Lakes Watershed
has increased sources of harmful
runoff, and threats from invasive
plant species have multiplied. Our
lake is not only a great natural
and recreational resource but also
an economic engine for the local
communities. It is important to
protect this valuable resource for
residents and visitors alike, now
and into the future.
Today, Friends of Messalonskee
is actively involved in controlling
the spread of invasive variable
leaf milfoil in the lake as well as
protecting other lakes through
Courtesy Boat Inspections. It is
also part of a broader initiative
to improve the water quality
throughout the Belgrade Lakes
watershed by participating in
the Lake Trust. The membership
has grown from the handful of
individuals who first got together in
the early 1930s to 350 members and
over 1,000 Facebook friends today.
Snow Pond Center for the
Arts is an active member of this
engaged group of neighbors. We
all recognize that preserving the
quality of the Belgrade Lakes is
essential to the vibrant central
Maine communities in which we
live, learn, work and play.

on a loon count or helping set
up milfoil barriers, Friends of
Messalonskee needs your volunteer
support to keep our lake healthy
and accessible. Please join us
