YEARBOOK – HUANCAYO GEOMAGNETIC DATA 20091 INTRODUCTIONThis publication contains basic information on geomagnetic observations carried outduring 2009 in the Huancayo Geomagnetic Observatory (HUA), which belongs to theGeophysical Institute of Peru (IGP).In 2009, like in the previous years, the Huancayo Geomagnetic Observatory haskept a close collaboration with the International Real-Time Magnetic observatory Network(INTERMAGNET), which Huancayo Geomagnetic Observatory had joined to in 2003.2 DESCRIPTION OF THE HUANCAYO GEOMAGNETIC OBSERVATORYThe observatory was established in 1919 by the Carnegie Institution of Washington,and it began to acquire continuously geomagnetic records since March 1 st 1922. TheGeomagnetic Observatory is located some 13 km NW from Huancayo city. The Absolutehouse “main pier” is situated in latitude 12º 02' 28.69'' south and longitude 75º 19' 14.11''west, at an elevation of 3314 meters above sea level (3336 m. Geomagnetic coordinates given are computed from the IGRF model (IGRF10 generationdegree 13) at the epoch 2009.53 ABSOLUTE MEASUREMENTSAbsolute house was built on 1919, it has three piers to the East side and three piersto the West side, the six piers are made of concrete with square caps of nonmagneticmarble, fitted with brass instrument clamps, are provided on each pier. The main pier is theE-2, all geomagnetic data are reduced on this point. Figure 1 is a view of the absolute houseon 1919 and 2009 from the northwest.Absolute House 1919 Absolute House 20093.1 DI-FluxFigure 1 Absolute HouseAbsolute observation were carried out on a regular basis by means of a DI-fluxmagnetometer (or Declination and Inclination Magnetometers) for measuring the angles Dand I. Measurements are obtained by operating the theodolite mounted probe in the nullmode.The total magnetic field intensity, F, was measured by means of Proton PrecessionMagnetometer. The absolute values H, X, Y and Z were then derived from:H = F cos ( I ) (1)X = H cos ( D ) (2)Y = H sin ( D ) (3)Z = F sin ( I ) (4)Were H, Z and F are field values at the time of the I measurement. X and Y are field valuesbetween D and I time.DI-flux at Huancayo Geomagnetic Observatory uses a Bartington MAG-01H fluxgatesensor mounted on Carl Zeiss-Jena O10B non-magnetic theodolite.The DI-flux consist of a CARL ZEISS non-magnetic theodolite model THEO 010B,with a single-axis fluxgate sensor mounted on top of the telescope and magnetometerelectronics from Bartington. The DI-flux is considered to be an absolute instrument, whichmeans that the angles measured by the instruments do not deviate from the true values of Dand I. 4 REFERENCE MAGNETOMETERSThe IGP maintains reference magnetometers for declination, inclination and totalintensity at Huancayo Geomagnetic Observatory where they are use to calibrate thevariometers periodically. DI-flux magnetometer is used as both the declination and inclinationreference and an Barringer M-234 Proton magnetometer is used as the total-field reference.Regular inter-comparisons are performed at IAGA workshops on GeomagneticObservatory Instruments, Data Acquisition and Processing relate the Peruvian referencemagnetometers to international standards. 5 VECTOR MAGNETOMETERSThe construction of the variation house was completed on 1921. On October,1921 the Eschenhagen magnetograph DTM CIW No. 2 was installed and March 1, 1922 startcontinuous photographic recording. From January to August, 1997 were succesfully installedtwo fluxgate magnetometers, one of the Geophysics Resear Laboratory (GRL) – Univertity ofTokyo “GRL variometer”, and the other of the Earthquake Research Institute (ERI) –University of Tokyo “ RFP-523 variomenter”.Figure 4 Variometer HouseOn March 2003, with the “GRL variometer” we joined to INTERMAGNET MagneticObservatory (IMO), renamed by “INTERMAGNET variometer”, starting data transmission to“Geomagnetic Information Node” (GIN) of Edinburgh (EDI).5.1 INTERMAGNET VariometerMain variometer consisted of a set of fluxgate sensor (three vector components).The fluxgate sensor is aligned to local geomagnetic north. an Internet system providecontrol-time through U. 5.2 RFP-523 VariometerThis magnetometer is used as backup variometer consisted of a set of fluxgatesensor (three vector components), a proton precession sensor (total intensity) and athermometer attached to the fluxgate sensor unit. The fluxgate sensor is aligned to localgeomagnetic north. A GPS give the control-time. DC-battery provide power when loose ofpower occurs. vertical-intensity (Z) variometers and one photographic recorder made by Otto Toepfer andSon, Potsdam. Because of the frequent and large fluctuations in H and loss of trace duringtimes of magnetic disturbance, a La Cour low-sensitivity H variometer was installed as anadjunct to the Eschenhagen equipment in April, 1937. It was mounted on a speciallyconstructed bass support on the north edge of the variometer pier of the Eschenhagenapparatus, adjacent to the H variometer, the position of which is noted in figure 2 (D).Control-time is with an electronic clock made by Oscar Veliz, Peru. The data presentation is XYZF coordinate.6.4 Daily mean valuesvalues.Daily mean values, centred on the UT half day, are computed from the one-minute6.5 Monthly mean valuesMonthly mean values are calculated from the X, Y and Z daily mean elements forthe seven geomagnetic elements X, Y, Z, D, I, H and F.
