Chapter Ten1191888 REVISITEDGod’s Attempt to Revive and Reform the ChurchTHE GREAT SIN of ancient Israel was that of placing theirown opinions, desires, preferences, and “wisdom” in place ofGod’s revealed will. They tended to look to themselves, or totheir wayward leaders, and even to the pagan nations around them for“ideas” and “inspiration” as to how to live and work for the Lord.Their great sin was to look to man rather than to Christ for their wisdomand guidance. The Hebrews were not willing to submit to the directionsand restrictions of the Lord. They simply wanted their ownway, to follow the leadings of their own mind, and be controlledby their own judgment. Could they have been left freeto do this, no complaints would have been made of Moses;but they were restless under restraint. Testimonies, vol. 3,360.Looking to man rather than to Christ has been modern Israel’s greatsin also—for quite some time now. Because of our tendency to placeour own wisdom, or that of other men, ahead of that of Jesus Christ, the Lord sent a special message of revival and reformation to our churchin General Conference session in Minneapolis in October and November1888. It was a call to turn from looking to man and to focusour attention upon the uplifted Saviour and His atoning heavenly ministryin our behalf. It was a special call from the Lord for His church tonot just know and preach the theory but to actually experience thethree angels’ messages of Righteousness by Faith. The Lord in His great mercy sent a most precious messageto His people through Elders Waggoner and Jones. This119
120 OUR GREATEST NEEDmessage was to bring more prominently before the world theuplifted Saviour, the sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. It presented justification through faith in the Surety; it invitedthe people to receive the righteousness of Christ, which ismade manifest in obedience to all the commandments of God.Many had lost sight of Jesus. They needed to have their eyesdirected to His divine person, His merits, and His changelesslove for the human family. All power is given into His hands, that He may dispense rich gifts unto men, imparting the pricelessgift of His own righteousness to the helpless human agent. This is the message that God commanded to be given to theworld. It is the third angel’s message, which is to be proclaimedwith a loud voice, and attended with the outpouringof His Spirit in a large measure. The uplifted Saviour is to appear in His efficacious workas the Lamb slain, sitting upon the throne, to dispense thepriceless covenant blessings, the benefits He died to purchasefor every soul who should believe on Him. John couldnot express that love in words; it was too deep, too broad;he calls upon the human family to behold it. Christ is pleadingfor the church in the heavenly courts above, pleading for thosefor whom He paid the redemption price of His own lifeblood.Centuries, ages, can never diminish the efficacy of this atoningsacrifice. The message of the gospel of His grace was tobe given to the church in clear and distinct lines, that the worldshould no longer say that Seventh-day Adventists talk thelaw, the law, but do not teach or believe Christ. The efficacy of the blood of Christ was to be presentedto the people with freshness and power, that their faith mightlay hold upon its merits. As the high priest sprinkled the warmblood upon the mercy seat, while the fragrant cloud of incenseascended before God, so while we confess our sinsand plead the efficacy of Christ’s atoning blood, our prayersare to ascend to heaven, fragrant with the merits of ourSaviour’s character. Notwithstanding our unworthiness, weare ever to bear in mind that there is One that can take awaysin and save the sinner. Every sin acknowledged before Godwith a contrite heart, He will remove. This faith is the life of
