OVERCOMING CONFUSION 63tuary. This is the service which began when the 2300 daysended. At that time, as foretold by Daniel the prophet, ourHigh Priest entered the most holy, to perform the last divisionof His solemn work—to cleanse the sanctuary. As anciently the sins of the people were by faith placedupon the sin offering and through its blood transferred, infigure, to the earthly sanctuary, so in the new covenant thesins of the repentant are by faith placed upon Christ and transferred,in fact, to the heavenly sanctuary. And as the typicalcleansing of the earthly was accomplished by the removal ofthe sins by which it had been polluted, so the actual cleansingof the heavenly is to be accomplished by the removal, orblotting out, of the sins which are there recorded. But beforethis can be accomplished, there must be an examinationof the books of record to determine who, through repentanceof sin and faith in Christ, are entitled to the benefitsof His atonement. The cleansing of the sanctuary thereforeinvolves a work of investigation—a work of judgment. This work must be performed prior to the coming of Christto redeem His people; for when He comes, His reward iswith Him to give to every man according to his works. Revelation22:12.Thus those who followed in the light of the prophetic wordsaw that, instead of coming to the earth at the termination ofthe 2300 days in 1844, Christ then entered the Most HolyPlace of the heavenly sanctuary to perform the closing workof atonement preparatory to His coming. It was seen, also, that while the sin offering pointed toChrist as a sacrifice, and the high priest represented Christas a mediator, the scapegoat typified Satan, the author ofsin, upon whom the sins of the truly penitent will finally beplaced. When the high priest, by virtue of the blood ofthe sin offering, removed the sins from the sanctuary,he placed them upon the scapegoat. When Christ, by virtueof His own blood, removes the sins of His peoplefrom the heavenly sanctuary at the close of His ministration,He will place them upon Satan, who, in the executionof the judgment, must bear the final penalty. The
64 OUR GREATEST NEEDscapegoat was sent away into a land not inhabited, neverto come again into the congregation of Israel. So will Satanbe forever banished from the presence of God andHis people, and he will be blotted from existence in thefinal destruction of sin and sinners. The Great Controversy,420–422.As Christ’s ministration was to consist of two greatdivisions, each occupying a period of time and having adistinctive place in the heavenly sanctuary, so the typicalministration consisted of two divisions, the daily and theyearly service, and to each a department of the tabernaclewas devoted. As Christ at His ascension appeared in the presence ofGod to plead His blood in behalf of penitent believers, so thepriest in the daily ministration sprinkled the blood of the sacrificein the holy place in the sinner’s behalf. The blood of Christ, while it was to release the repentantsinner from the condemnation of the law, was not tocancel the sin; it would stand on record in the sanctuaryuntil the final atonement; so in the type the blood of the sinoffering removed the sin from the penitent, but it rested in thesanctuary until the Day of Atonement. In the great day of final award, the dead are to be“judged out of those things which were written in thebooks, according to their works.” Revelation 20:12. Thenby virtue of the atoning blood of Christ, the sins of all thetruly penitent will be blotted from the books of heaven. Thus the sanctuary will be freed, or cleansed, from therecord of sin. In the type, this great work of atonement,or blotting out of sins, was represented by the services ofthe Day of Atonement—the cleansing of the earthly sanctuary, which was accomplished by the removal, by virtueof the blood of the sin offering, of the sins by which it hadbeen polluted. Patriarchs and Prophets, 357–358.From the above, we can clearly see that Christ’s death on the crossdid not, at that time, make atonement for any soul. If Christ’s substitu-
