20 Remembering Dick Rice (L-R) Pictured are Norb Bahl, Dick Rice, Lou White, and Charlie Becker. I first met Dick Rice around 1981 when Oil Jobber President, Norb Bahl, asked him to be involved with the Petroleum Marketers and Convenience Stores of Iowa campaign for Camp Courageous. Dick often came to the camp and I always enjoyed my visits with him in Des Moines. Dick was one of about 12 jobbers that Norb tapped each year to do lead gifts that were matched by DX. Dick's picture from 30-years ago is in a video that continues to be shown annually at the PMCI Convention. Dick was an inspiration to many of us. As I look back, it was an incredible leap of faith to get behind a project that was financially shaky at the time, and a camp director, just 25 years-old. Peggy Youngblut always had an enthusiastic approach to life. In high school at Don Bosco in Gilbertville, Iowa, she was in the honor society, the piano accompanist for the high school musicals and a member of student council. At Creighton University in Omaha, she was active in Delta Zeta Sorority and was a resident advisor for Freshmen students graduating magna cum laude with a major in journalism Peggy loved adventure and trying new things. She went sky diving even when her Dad tried to discourage her. She took tap dancing lessons as an adult with her sisters and continued to study the piano and traveled abroad. Following college, she worked as an advertising copy writer for Dayton's Department store in Minneapolis and subsequently enrolled in law school at William Mitchell College of Law. While crossing a street near campus one night in October of 1973, Peggy was struck by a drunk driver and suffered a severe brain injury. She was put on a respirator and given a slim chance of survival. However, Peggy's determined spirit fought on and after several months in a coma, Peggy regained consciousness and began the long rehabilitation process. She was moved to Craig Hospital in Denver, Colorado, an inpatient rehabilitation institute for traumatic brain injuries. With the unconditional love, support and determination of her parents, Jim and Marge Youngblut and her family, Peggy gradually relearned to talk, walk and write. While at Craig, Peggy discovered that she could still play the piano and read music even though she had difficulty reading words. After Craig Hospital Peggy was moved to St. Louis Hospital for throat surgery and then back to Waterloo for months and years of therapy. Peggy continued to improve, regaining her independence. She learned to drive again and even went waterskiing. She traveled with her Dad and sister to visit Yellowstone National Park and went to Spain with a school group. Peggy loved being surrounded by family and friends and was an avid card player. She was always happy to have visits from her sisters, brother and her nieces and nephews. As a hobby she liked to create detailed needle craft projects. In 1988 Peggy suffered a fall in her home where she'd been living independently and fractured her knee leading to complicated surgery and rehabilitation. Eventually she needed to use a wheel chair. During the past 10 years, Peggy's health slowly continued to decline, however, she always had a big smile for everyone and never complained about the "hand she was dealt". No matter if she was being given medication or dessert or just a hug - her response was always “THANK YOU MUCH!” The family has asked that Peggy’s Memorials go to Camp Courageous, as did her special medical equipment. Peggy was a wonderful inspiration to so many. 21
