Do not include 20 different pictures of the same sampling event.Extra pictures should be stored on your hard drive.2.2 EQUIPMENT AND PERSONNEL DECONTAMINATION PROCEDURESThe purpose of this procedure is to provide a description of methods for preventing or reducingcross-contamination and a description of methods that will protect the health and safety of sitepersonnel.2.2.1 FIELD EQUIPMENT DECONTAMINATIONAll reusable sampling equipment should be properly cleaned before going into the field. Whensampling and field activities are completed, sampling equipment that has come in contact withcontaminated or suspect water should be decontaminated before leaving the site. The purpose ofthe field decontamination procedures is to remove any impurities that might bias the analyticalresults. The field decontamination procedure should provide a quick method of removing mostsample residues from the equipment.2.2.2 SAMPLING EQUIPMENT AND CONTAINERSSurface water with known or suspected contamination by biological organisms such as bacteria,viruses, or parasites should be decontaminated with a mixture of bleach and water. A specifiedtechnique is not specified, but two suggestions for decontaminating equipment are presented. The bleach/water mixture is contained in a bucket (usually 10%). Equipment is placedinto the bucket and thoroughly brushed with a long handle bottle brush and then rinsedwith either tap or distilled water. For equipment that is too large to fit into the bucket,hold the piece over the bucket and proceed as described above. For churn splitters, poursome of the bleach/water mixture into the container and proceed as described above. A bleach/water mixture is contained in a spray can. The piece of equipment is held over abucket while it is being sprayed with the mixture. The bucket collects the drippings fromthe equipment and disposed of properly. The decontaminated equipment is then rinsedwith either tap or distilled water. The outside and inside surface of churn splitters issprayed and rinsed with either tap or distilled water. The bleach/water residue is collectedin the disposal bucket for later disposal.2.3 SAFETY PROCEDURESPersonal safety of staff engaged in any field work activity (e.g., in transit, walking or hiking, and anyfield activities while at the sample site) is of primary importance. Staff should never placethemselves in dangerous or risky situations. Any hazards that are known by field personnel shouldbe communicated to other members of the field crew.Field work should be postponed if there is indication that engagement in the field activity couldcause bodily harm other than the normal risks associated with field work. All field work has riskof personal injury which is stated in the job classifications for field work employment; this isnormal risk. If any member of the field crew is uncomfortablewith a reasonable self-determined hazardous field condition, it is that person’s responsibility tobring this to the attention of the project lead and that person is not required to complete the workassignment. A “reasonable self-determined hazardous field condition” is defined as other thannormal risk. The project lead shall not dismiss any person’s spoken concerns that field conditionsare too hazardous to complete the work assignment.The following sub-sections provide specific guidelines regarding safety while fulfilling field workassignments.2.3.1 FIELD TRIP ROUTING AND TELEPHONE CHECK-IN PROCEDUREBefore any field trip is conducted, a Routing Form or "Float Plan" (FIGURE 2.5) must becompleted. Copies should be given to other staff members assisting on the trip and to the UnitManager or substitute supervisor.REVISED SEPTEMBER 2012 27
