STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES FOR SURFACE WATER QUALITY SAMPLINGTake either a satellite phone or cell phone. A cell phone is sufficient if excellent cell phonecoverage is available at the site. If cell phone coverage is insufficient, a satellite phone isrequired.Call or leave a message with the supervisor be<strong>for</strong>e leaving after normal work hours and callinno later than 0900 hours by the next day.For sites considered too hazardous to sample at night, reevaluate those sites the nextmorning be<strong>for</strong>e proceeding to take samples.Use a weather radio to get the latest weather in<strong>for</strong>mation.2.3.5 BOAT SAFETYADEQ currently uses a pontoon boat, an aluminumboat and a raft to complete lake work.The pontoon boat’s gas tank holds approximately 20gallons and needs to be filled with unleaded gas 87octane or higher quality. The pontoon is startedwith a key ignition (FIGURE 2.7).The aluminum boat has a gas tank on board. Re-fillit as necessary with high-per<strong>for</strong>mance unleaded gas.Prep the motor with the hand pump and make surethe motor is set to “start” on the throttle. Pull thecord (like a lawnmower) several times to get themotor started.Life vests are legally required to be on-board <strong>for</strong> eachpassenger. The crew should have taken the 8-hourBoating Safety course provided by the Coast Guardin order to become familiar with proper boatingprocedures.FIGURE 2.7.
