It was Peter’s idea to have his students cook a pancake breakfast at the annual Oktoberfest Community Breakfast 20 years ago. This year Conestoga students mixed 1,600 pounds of pancake batter to make 20,000 pancakes and cooked nearly 40,000 sausages for the Kitchener/Waterloo community. Susan Hilton: An Update We featured an article on Susan Hilton in our Winter, 2000 edition of Connections. At that time she had recently celebrated her first anniversary with her new heart. Susan had been diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a disease that had claimed the lives of her grandmother, her uncle and her 17 year-old brother Scott. In 1998, Susan received a heart transplant. What has Susan been doing since her new lease on life began? It took some time for Susan to get her “land legs” after having been so ill for such a long time, but once she got her stride, there was no holding this determined young woman back. As her body adjusted, Susan decided to take her Mother’s advice to go back to school. As a result of medication that Susan will have to take for the rest of her life, some areas of nursing are no longer an option for her. Therefore, the opportunity to take certification courses in Leadership and Susan Hilton - now Management at St. Mary’s General Hospital through McMaster University, seemed a logical step. One step lead to another, and Susan applied for the Bachelor of Science Nursing Program, from which she graduated in June of 2005, Magna Cum Laude, and on the Dean’s Honour List. This fall Susan became a part-time faculty member here at Conestoga, teaching in the Practical Nursing Program. What’s in the future for this inspirational woman? “I’d love to get my Master’s of Science degree, and become full-time faculty at Conetoga. To teach here full-time would be a dream come true”.
