FIRST it was his brother, now it’s his mate… that poor John McCarthy can’t take a trick.John is the popular painter comegreyhound man who has already tastedGroup success with his star galloperDagenham but had plenty of winners alongthe way.Geoff Allen gave John the former smartrace bitch Hanson Sapphire to breed with acouple of years ago and he put her to Victorianspeedster Primo Uno.Hanson Sapphire could run like the windwinning 12 races, running second in aCapalaba Futurity and making the final of theEric Thomson at the Gold Coast. She also ran30.14 around Albion Park and 25.06 at Ipswich.John’s brother Terry bought a black dogpup, named him Rattle And Hum and tookhim straight to top grade at Albion Parkwinning a Young Guns in sub-30 secondsalong the way.John and his wife Maggie have becomeLate starterTony lands afirst-upwinnerTONY Parry has, until six months ago,been a reluctant greyhound man.A little bitch called Cool Duk (BlackEnforcer-Paw Play) has changed all that.Tony was four years old when his mumRobyn hooked up with Jim Swan andintroduced Tony to the world of greyhoundracing.“I was always in the background, helpingout, but not really interested,” said Tony.“But I grew up with the Swan family andsat back and watched as they did their dogsand started to learn.”Now 30, Tony and his uncle Steve Swanhave become great mates.“Steve gave me four dogs and got me intotraining,” said Tony. I thought he would turn out the bestof the two because he had a calmer nature.”But Buddy Stanley proved a bit of an earlyworry for Shayne.“He would run good and then at his nexttrial would disappoint,” said Shayne.That’s when Shayne decided to give thedog a huge confidence booster.“Denis Godfrey has a few pups and abroodbitch or two at our property and Ithought it would be a good idea to send thisdog and a Bombastic Shiraz bitch to Denis toget their careers started on an easy note.”That’s exactly what happened.Both were ready some weeks before theGolden Muzzle but Denis held them back torun in the series. Both won their heats andBuddy Stanley easily won the final by 11 anda half lengths.“The dog was getting too excited, wipinghimself out,” said Shayne. “Denis has a twoand a half hour drive from Tully to Cairns toRenzo Park ComplexPET TRANSPORT SERVICECoveringGrafton - CasinoAreastoGold CoastBrisbaneToowoombarace and I thought it would be good for himto do that to help settle him.”Despite his brilliance in heat and final,Shayne is still willing to part with BuddyStanley.“Every dog is for sale,” he said. “But Deniswill keep him going and chase a few age racesup that way with him.“If his times warrant it, he could come backdown here to race. I expect there is a bit ofimprovement in him yet.”As for John McCarthy. Unfortunately forJohn the two pups he kept out of the litter didnot make the grade.
