But youwouldn’t know it to look at either of them. They are a picture of health albeit showingthe white hairs that are the tell tale signs ofage. They have earned a good home and theyhave got one, courtesy of their offspring andtheir grandkids. The new broodbitch kennel and whelpingarea at Dave and Christine Robartson’sChurchable property is completed andhousing some broodbitch goldmines otherthan Roxy and Roshana the original goldenpair. The new broodbitch kennel also housesbitches like Miss Hot Gossip, Double Guess,New Guess all putting their stamp onpedigrees or about to.Behind most great training establishmentsis a thriving breeding program and that isexactly what thrives at the Robartsons. While Dave and Christine would be thefirst to admit bitches like Roxy and Roshana, and more recently Double Guess and NewGuess are putting them to the fore, there areother aspects to the program that are just asimportant.1Black Enforcer-Classy Dresser(Collision-Smooth Syrah)Classy Dresser ... 22 Wins, 15 Seconds, 17 ThirdsAlbion Park: 30.04 – 35.16. Dave has a successfulformula and sticks to it.The fact High Earner (Collision-DoubleGuess) recently won the Group 2 Vince CurryMaiden series and has since run the threefastest 520m winning times at Albion Park thisyear proves it is working. He’s the hottest prospect in the country, arguably the best since El Galo (Where’sPedro-Roxy Reason). Our broodbitches are fed thesame meat we feed our racing dogs, and theyall get Advance kibble, just like the racingdogs.“The pups here also get Advance, but apuppy kibble the company manufactures.”The Robartson broodbitches are allowedaccess to a two-acre galloping paddock everyday, sometimes twice a day. They gallop aboutif they feel like it, don’t if they are not in themood.“We try to maintain a fitness in ourbroodbitches which I think is important whenthey are whelping, specially their stomachmuscles. Each of our broodbitches is fed anAroxine tablet daily to stimulate the thyroid,”said Dave. The daily gallop in the two-acre paddockcontinues right up to the time the bitches aredue to whelp, generally on their own thecloser they are to giving birth.“It ensures they maintain that fitness,”said Dave. Those bitches are kept with their pups inthe whelping box until about the fourth orfifth week after the birth. ”We believe thebitches have generally had enough by thenand the pups are starting to hurt by then,” hesaid.Dave is not one to believe in keeping hisbitches with her pups right up until they nextcome on season.“Our whelping boxes let out into a 20 footby 30 foot yard and the pups can venture outinto that when they can,” said Dave. “Fromabout seven or eight weeks of age they areallowed into a 20 metre by 6 metre yard wherethey start to stretch their legs and go for arun.“We particularly like to build up our pupswithin those first three months, get them solidwith all the minerals and vitamins they need… it’s all contained in the red meat and theAdvance kibble.”From three months they are put into 70metre by 20 metre paddocks that open onto atwo-acre paddock. In each of those two-acrepaddocks are a 450 litre tub that is filled withwater to allow the pups to frolic but moreimportantly cool down in during hot periods. From six months they are put into one ofthe three 80 metre by 80 metre holding yardsthat open onto a four-acre paddock thatcontains a large dam.“We leave the pups in these yards untilthey are about 14 months old, depending onhow many pups we have coming through andhow much room we have in the kennels at thetime,” said Dave. The pups are allowed access into the fouracrepaddock every couple of days and theRobartsons, Dave, Christine and son Toddare forever in playing with them, encouragingthem to chase behind a motorbike that pulls arope with a skin on the end.“We don’t use the motor bike much, justto get them started to chase and we find theypick up on it very quickly, maybe a couple oftimes a month,” he said.Feeding is started when the pups areready to wean from their mother. Sloppy mealsof kibble and mince ground up fed from thetime the pups are a few weeks old, ordepending on how many the broodbitch hasto feed herself. From three months of age the Robartsonpups are feeding a mixture of roo, beef, porkand chicken necks as bones.“We don’t feed chicken mince,” saidDave.A bucket full of Advance kibble is left ineach puppy yard all day, every day.“We believe having this kibble in the yardallows the pups to pick at the food as theywant and stops fighting over food.“We generally have four pups to apaddock and we like to see them have a kiloof meat each day, two-thirds of it is a red meatdiet. We never add anything to the food.“The pups get the protein they need fromTHE ORIGINAL AUSTRALIANNYLON PLASTICGREYHOUND MUZZLESApproved for racing in Queensland, New SouthWales, WA, SA & Northern Territory.Check the price against what you pay for wire!Ring Roger on 0403 025 429If no answer, leave name and messagewww.australiangreyhoundmuzzles.comBankcard, Mastercard or VisaThe (May, 2009) Journal Page 8

Chicken is fatty and will giveyou a fat pup. Fat kids don’t run and can’trun. Being fat affects the liver and we want toavoid any problems like that.“Our pups are solid without being fat.”He says his pups are never fed stews orvegetables.“I got a lot of ideas from the late AlexHauler the vet in Victoria,” said Dave. “I spoketo him often. That’s where the Advance kibblecomes in. It’s produced in Victoria. Why feedveges when the kibble has everything the dogneeds.”Dave says it is almost impossible to pickthe best pup from a litter even watching themclosely in the paddock every day.“Miss Hot Gossip was the standout inher litter and a real character, but High Earnerwas just another pup when that litter wasbeing reared. He was the smallest of the dogs.“And El Galo was not as outgoing as somein the paddock, but if something was goingon around the place, he was always the firstthere to investigate it,” said Dave. The Robartsons also like to make surethere is plenty happening about their propertyto get the pups used to different things whichwill help them settle and accept differentthings by the time it comes to going racing.“One of the most important things aboutrearing in Queensland is that pups must beable to cool off,” said Dave. “I’ve been told itis too hot to rear pups in this state, and that’swhere it is a must to have a dam in thegalloping paddocks for the pups.“In the wild a dog will run every day, allday. Our racing dogs are running every day… it’s the nature of the beast to want to keepactive. By letting our racing dogs out into apaddock the day after a race it helps get rid ofthe lactic acid build up from their race.“And the same applies to pups. Theyshould be able to gallop all the time.“If a dog doesn’t have access to water tocool down, then it won’t want to work.”Robartson says the secret to his breed’slongevity is the basics they get as pups, followed by the conditioning they receivewhen they first go into training.“We spend two months conditioning adog from the time he comes into the kennelsafter breaking in until his first trial on aracetrack,” he said. “It’s that earlyconditioning that produces tough dogs. ElGalo has raced constantly for a year withouta break.”The Robartsons also do as much earlyeducation as they can at home and will worktheir pups up the straight track to get themchasing. But no box work is done.“We let John Collins do that at Postman’sRidge,” said Dave.Manly Road Vet Hospital100% Strike Rate219Average Litter Size 7.84(Qld stud dog stats Dec Journal )* Artificial Inseminations withfresh, chilled or frozen semen 24hours 365 days a year.* Greyhound Semen Bank withover 40 sires in stock for sale. The Robartson worming schedule for hispups starts at one week old.“We give them the worming syrup everyweek from week one until they are weaned, then we worm with the syrup every twoweeks,” said Dave. “From three months ofage we use Ivomec every month. We find itthe best.”Lime is spread about the paddocks at theproperty every few weeks to help eliminateworms and fleas.Dave reckons many people have goodintentions about rearing their pups but cutback on costs, trying to do it as cheap aspossible. “You can buy chicken mince for 50cents a kilo. It’s high in protein but has noiron. Some of the kibbles being used are likefeeding cardboard to dogs,” he said.He says the number of injuries among thepups being reared on the property is minimal.“Miss Hot Gossip sprung a toe at ninemonths of age, but Larry Jocumsen stitchedit up and she raced all her life without anyproblems.”Dave is totally against “side-by-side”* Pregnancy Ultrasounds, checking foetal health anddetermining litter size.* Semen Freezingruns. “In the wild a dog doesn’t run up anddown for 70 metres."Those runs do more damage than theydo good. I’ve watched our pups here and theywill go around those four-acre paddocks 10times, turning to go every which way.“I also don’t believe in having paddocksthat are far too big. A pup can do too muchand take too much out of itself.”He says every litter his family has bred atChurchable has contained at least one gooddog, and often handy city class gallopers.“I believe a mating is 50-50 sire and dam,but I have never seen a good dog come outof a bitch that couldn’t run."Ask every breeder that bred a high classdog and there will always be a story aboutthe bitch’s ability.”He admits that every dog he breeds willnot become a champion like El Galo, Miss HotGossip or a High Earner, but by sticking to aproven recipe each and every pup will havethe chance to produce its best. It’s worked for quite a few years now, andthe Robartsons are confident it will continue.Manly Rd, Manly West,Brisbane.
