The regional park network is capable of providing a range of recreational opportunities.<br />

However, not all activities are appropriate on every regional park (refer to Principles 12 and<br />

16). The classification system works so that individual parks provide recreation opportunities<br />

based on their particular natural, landscape, tangata whenua and cultural values, and their<br />

capacity to absorb the activity without threatening these values and quality of visitor<br />

experience on the park.<br />

There is a need to provide infrastructure to support recreation opportunities (refer to Part 14<br />

Infrastructure). The classification system defines the extent of development and<br />

infrastructure on the parks, appropriate to the type of experience people are seeking and to<br />

the park setting. It is critical to ensure that the supporting infrastructure, as well as the<br />

activity, does not threaten the park values.<br />

The classification also defines the type of core visitor services to be found at each class of<br />

park. Again, these are not exclusive to each class of park but are most likely to be provided<br />

at the class indicated in the table.<br />

7.1.2 Manage each park in terms of their class in accordance with Figure 2 below.<br />
