The remainder of the park outside the management zones will be managed as farmed and<br />

natural settings in accordance with the classification of the parks. People will generally be<br />

able to access those areas but should not expect to find facilities there, apart from tracks<br />

through the areas.<br />

There are areas within many parks that offer a feeling of remoteness or wilderness. Many of<br />

these areas are relatively accessible and are becoming increasingly popular with casual<br />

visitors. There is a need to manage the level of access to these areas and to limit the level<br />

and type of infrastructure to ensure that the special character of these locations is not<br />

threatened.<br />

Some areas contain natural and cultural features that are especially sensitive to human<br />

activity, such as historic structures, archaeological sites, wetlands, wildlife habitats or areas,<br />

and require a higher level of management.<br />

Some areas may also contain major features and visitor attractions that increase recreation<br />

demand in an area, such as waterfalls, eg, Hunua Falls (Hunua Ranges) or visitor centres.<br />

Such areas will be managed as ‘Special management zones’ (refer to section 7.5 below)<br />
