7.7.3 Monitor and periodically report on the state of the biodiversity of the parks, in<br />

liaison with key stakeholders, including:<br />

a) The nature and state of the parks’ biodiversity and changes to these,<br />

including:<br />

i) forest and vegetation health,<br />

ii) native frogs, skinks, geckos, invertebrates and bats to assess spatial<br />

distribution and population dynamics,<br />

iii) targeted pair counts of threatened and re-introduced species, such as<br />

NZ Dotterel and Kokako, and<br />

iv) waterways and the adjoining marine environment.<br />

b) The nature of threats to park biodiversity, namely:<br />

i) pest plants,<br />

ii) mammalian pests, such as possums, deer, goats and pigs,<br />

iii) rats in areas where there are intensive pest control programmes (eg,<br />

Shakespear and Tawharanui Open Sanctuaries, Hunua Falls and the<br />

Kokako <strong>Management</strong> Area), and<br />

iv) pathogens, such as kauri dieback disease, including monitoring plots<br />

and efficacy of control programmes.<br />

c) The impact of visitors on park biodiversity, namely:<br />

i) the nature and scale of activities, including, the potentials to spread of<br />

pest plants and pathogens, and<br />

ii) the nature of illegal activities such as illegal mountain biking and offtrack<br />

activity in sensitive ecosystems.<br />

7.7.4 Monitor and periodically report on the impacts of visitor activities on the park<br />

values and infrastructure, including:<br />

a) the impacts, including the cumulative impacts, of casual and discretionary<br />

activities on park values and other park users, and<br />

b) the level of use and condition of park infrastructure, including tracks, the<br />

safety of visitor structures, and the planned maintenance and improvements<br />

to these.<br />

7.7.5 Undertake research and periodically report on recreational and use needs and<br />

the representation of different visitor groups on the parks, including:<br />

a) public awareness, preferences and satisfaction with features of the park<br />

including overall satisfaction with park visits,<br />

b) public use and expectations for the parks,<br />

c) the barriers to their enjoyment of the parks,<br />

d) different cultural needs,<br />

e) the motivations for and nature of visitor activity on the parks,<br />

f) visitor profiles, including the origin of visitors,<br />

g) incident numbers, types and mitigation measures, and<br />

h) suggestions for improvements.<br />
