We're still working to makethem better! The latest improvement in the new generation of Shorty carbs is a minor tweakof the intermediate fuel delivery. Our research to create emissions compliant carbs for our OEcustomers paid off with an unexpected performance improvement, which we have incorporatedinto our regular line of carbs. Previous E & G carbs have three fuel delivery ports above thethrottle plate, but the new design has four. The benefit is better throttle response, and asmoother transition from the low/intermediate system to the main jet. In addition, we added ano-ring seal around the idle mixture screw to eliminate the possibility of air leakage and to helpprevent the screw from vibrating out of adjustment. All current production Super E & G carburetors,serial number N02188 and later have these new features. An easy way to identify a newcarb with four fuel delivery holes is the “Made In USA” on top of the carb body right below theword “SHORTY.” The Super E’s 17/8" bore is more than adequate for street engines up to about 100"displacement. When you run out of holes in the intermediate system, themain jet comes in and handles fuel delivery for the higher rpm.Due to inadequate frame clearance, the taller throttle bracket cannot be usedon 1986-’03 Harley-Davidson® Sportster® chassis. Therefore, these Sportstermodels require the installation of earlier butterfly style throttle cables. Kitsfor 2004-’06 Sportster models are compatible with stock throttle cables.S&S® does not recommend polishing or chrome plating Super E & G carburetors.Our repair department has seen many carbs with plugged passages dueto polishing compounds, and some carbs have been destroyed because thepolishing or chrome plating had altered critical machined surfaces.Recommended for closed circuit use only–S&S Super E & G carburetorsshown in this catalog section are not approved for use on motor vehiclesoperated on California public highways, or in other states where similarpollution laws may apply.
