GREAT KAI ON THE MARAE
Many marae buildings, particularly ablution
and kitchen facilities, do not meet current
local authority health and safety regulations.
So the Marae Heritage and Facilities
Committee is there to help them develop and
conserve their facilities.
Thanks to $360,000 funding from the
Committee, the ringawera (kitchen workers)
at Te Awamarahi Marae in the Waikato are
now very happy in their work.
They have a brand-new wharekai (kitchen)
and modern equipment to help them feed
hungry hordes from the schools, community
groups, government agencies and tribal
organisations that use the marae for
gatherings and events.
Not all the workers are experienced in the
use of the new high-tech kitchen equipment,
so the rangatahi (youth) of the marae have
made them an instruction manual in the form
of a DVD.
Affiliated to the Kingitanga movement,
Te Awamarahi Marae frequently hosts
tangihanga, unveilings, reunions, wa- nanga
(seminars) and other activities. The
refurbishment of the kitchen makes it easier
to meet health and safety requirements, and
for the marae to cater for bigger groups.
The Lottery Marae Heritage
and Facilities Committee
makes grants to assist with
the capital costs of the
conservation, restoration and
development of marae facilities,
particularly wharenui, wharekai
and ablution facilities.
