Minister’s Discretionary Fund
GREEN LIGHT FOR
OPUNAKE VOLUNTEER
FIRE BRIGADE
Thanks to a grant of $14,371 from the
Minister’s Discretionary Fund, the Opunake
Volunteer Fire Brigade and its Fire Police
Unit can now respond to emergencies much
more effectively.
When their 1982 van proved too old and tired
to transport the fire crew and their equipment
around southern Taranaki, the volunteer
firefighters decided they needed an upgrade.
ambulances, floods and tornadoes, and
search and rescues. The Fire Police Unit
provides vital assistance in looking after
traffic control, setting up auxiliary lighting and
carrying extra rescue equipment.
The grant means the Brigade has been able
to put in additional seating and buy a tote
trailer so they can take all their equipment
in one trip. They used to have to make two
trips, which made their response slower and
far less effective.
