CACTUS CHALLENGES
KIDS
The Combined Adolescent Challenge Training
Unit & Support (CACTUS) programme
pushes Wairoa’s youth to their physical and
mental limits.
Based on training developed by the armed
forces, CACTUS helps young people learn
discipline, builds self-esteem and teaches
them the importance of teamwork. It
also provides career education, and uses
motivational speakers and mentoring to help
young people realise their potential.
CACTUS programmes are held twice a
year and run for eight weeks, each week
bringing more challenging tasks. At the end
of the programme, participants take part in
a graduation ceremony, aptly named ‘The
Longest Day,’ which presses the kids to the

drives the youngsters to reach their physical
goals, both individually and as a team.
Although the Youth Court can direct
offenders to take part in the programme,
CACTUS is not about counselling or saving
wayward youth. CACTUS assists all young
people with setting and realising their goals,
and gives them challenges they normally
would not get. It is designed to instil basic
discipline and provide guidelines outside the
home environment.
Wairoa Community Development Trust, which
acts as an umbrella organisation, received
a grant of $39,000 from the Hawke's
Bay Community Committee. Funding will
help the Trust complete two programmes
in 2009, covering trainer costs, uniforms,
administration, workshops, graduation
ceremonies, venue hire and food.
