GREAT GARDENS
Thanks to a grant of up to $433,000 from
the Lottery Significant Projects Fund, the
Hamilton City Council can complete the
construction of Te Parapara Garden.
When the first Pakeha whalers and sealers
came to Aotearoa, they depended on the
tangata whenua and their gardening skills
for food. In the 19th century, during the early
days of colonial settlement, Ma- ori were often
the market gardeners and traders, providing
the burgeoning new population with a variety
of fresh produce.
With the completion of Te Parapara Garden,
all New Zealanders will be able to visit a
traditional Ma- ori garden and find out how our
first gardeners tilled the soil.
Te Parapara will be an important addition
to Hamilton’s collection of gardens. They
include patches of land cultivated in the
traditions of China, Japan, Britain, India, the
United States and Italy.
Te Parapara has been designed according
to the practice of the local hapu- , and should
help promote a wider understanding of
tikanga in New Zealand.
New Zealand is said to be a nation of
gardeners and Hamilton City Council expect
Te Parapara to become a major attraction,
drawing more than 1.3 million visitors a year
to view Hamilton Gardens.
