The Beautiful Game in all its colours received
assistance to reach Palmerston North with
a grant of $4000 from the Manawatu/
Whanganui Committee.
Ethkick09, a soccer tournament for teams
representing different ethnicities, was held in
March after discussions amongst community
leaders, sporting services and social services
on how to promote positive engagement with
Manawatu’s ethnic communities.
They found that most migrant communities
are interested in – and play – soccer, the
most popular game in the world.
Seven-aside matches were played by teams
based on country of origin or ethnic group
and were run along World Cup lines with pool
play, quarters, semis and a final.
In a celebration of the district’s cultural
diversity (there are more than 100 ethnic
groups living in the Manawatu), hundreds
turned out on a fine weekend to support

Japan, Indonesia, Korea, the Sikh community,
Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bengal, Nepal, Pakistan,
England, Cambodia, Fiji, South America
and Romania.
Three new communities in Palmerston North
– former refugees from Congo, Burma and
Bhutan – also fielded teams.
The event had a festive air with food stalls and
entertainment between matches. Communities
that had been isolated mixed with their fellow
citizens to enjoy the universal game.
After more than 100 games were played,
Oman were declared the winners of the
serious grade and the Thirsty Camels from
Saudi Arabia the winners of the social grade.
Seeing so many different cultures, many of
whom have difficulties which each other in
their home countries, coming together for this
competition was a great experience for all.
