Taranaki Community PAEPAE IN THE PARK Paepae in the Park is held in Patea to celebrate Waitangi Day every year, with music and speakers focusing on the significance of our national day. The Paepae Committee of local volunteers aims to bring nationallyrecognised musicians to the event, drawing large crowds (almost 4,000 in 2009) to the small town. The first Paepae was held in 2004 and it continues to celebrate the diversity of culture of tangata whenua and tau iwi across our country. It wasn't spent in that year because of the devastating fire at the disused freezing works in Patea, which caused the cancellation of the Paepae when asbestos blew into the town.
