LOTTERY COMMUNITY COMMITTEES National Community Committee Te Tahua Hapori Nga - Whakaurunga A PERFECT PLACE TO PLAY Whether it is zipping around on a push bike, piecing together a colourful jigsaw or solving mysteries in a game <strong>of</strong> Cluedo, all children love to play. Toys are important tools for helping kids learn and grow through play, and not all families can afford to buy new toys or keep up with their children’s changing interests. Toy libraries aim to make sure everyone can access well-designed toys, games, puzzles and equipment. Operating similarly to public libraries, families and caregivers become members and, for a minimal cost, they can borrow toys for a fixed time period. They also aim to be a place where families can connect and interact with other families. The National Community Committee provided a grant <strong>of</strong> $156,700 to the Toy Library Federation <strong>of</strong> <strong>New</strong> <strong>Zealand</strong> for salaries and the purchase <strong>of</strong> toys. There are 225 toy libraries to serve over 12,000 families throughout the country. Funding will also enable the Federation to run a series <strong>of</strong> regional meetings and to reprint manuals. The regional meetings bring together a great mix <strong>of</strong> experienced and new committee members and provide an opportunity for networking and sharing ideas. The manuals, which are sent to each library free <strong>of</strong> charge, provide guidance when setting up and information on how to operate as a not-for-pr<strong>of</strong>it organisation.
