These systems use a saline chemical buffer in the advanced staining process to prepare biopsy samples for pathologists to identify cancerous tissues. The current implementation of the micro-fluidic dispense system (µFD) at Ventana has some drawbacks and limitations that need to be improved upon. Due to the high salinity of the solution, salt crystallization clogs develop on the dispense hardware and impede the performance of the system. Hanging solution drops on the dispense nozzle are also problematic because they can cause drops to fall on the label of the slide and possibly damage it or make it difficult to identify. Additionally, hanging drops allow for variation in the volume of fluid dispensed on slides. The objective of the project is to design an automated micro-fluidic dispense system that can reliably and accurately dispense 20 μl (microliters) of a concentrated saline buffer solution onto a microscope slide. The allowable preventative maintenance interval should be at least six months and the cost of goods of the system should be less than $500. The use of electrical control concepts, fluid mechanics, intelligent material selection, testing techniques and statistical analysis were used to determine the best solution. Two different dispense system designs and a mechanical scrubber were implemented as solutions. 53

Within the VirtualTourist community there have been 1.8 million reviews created and 3.8 million travel photos uploaded, and roughly one million users. VirtualTourist desires to implement a mobile application that will allow the users to interact with the community via a smart phone. Thus, VirtualTourist has requested our team to implement a prototype of the application that will model its actual application in deployment. The goal of this project is to create an mobile application that exhibits the desired functionality as agreed upon in the critical design review. These functions include taking a picture and uploading it to the server (Capture Trip), listing local precautions or things to do (Do/Do not do this), checking in to a VirtualTourist location (Check-in), displaying comments from other users that are associated with the area (Words on the Street), and updating user status (Status Update). Moreover, this application is required to communicate with a server to retrieve and to write data from or onto the server. All functionality will be displayed on Design Day using mobile devices that will connect to a test-server created by the team, and the final product will be delivered to VirtualTourist as complete as possible.
